Hoboken Fish and Chicago Whistle ReviewA lot of the short essays and stories in these two books started out as commentaries on NPR's "All Things Considered."
To say they cover a lot of territory is a terrible understatement. Read them and learn about art, big malemute dogs, pudding, writing for kids, African safaris, hot peppers, Chicago, Hoboken, being fat, being weird, living in bohemia, living in the boondocks, and more!
Truly wonderful stuff. Literally wonderful. The image of Pinkwater memorizing passages from Homer while operating a machine tool is hard to forget.
The only thing better than reading these is hearing Pinkwater read them. If you can get your paws on the OOP two-tape "Fishwhistle" audio book, do so. I have had friends seriously damage their bodies convulsing in laughter after hearing a few pieces.
In any case . . . buy the book. The price is steep, but you won't be sorry.
And . . . "eat pudding!"Hoboken Fish and Chicago Whistle Overview

The Golden Age of Chicago Children's Television ReviewTed Okuda and Jack Mulqueen's book, "The Golden Age Of Chicago Children's Television" is an incredible treasure chest of nostalgia for the beloved childhood memories of anyone who grew up in the Chicago Mid-West during the 1950's and 1960's.
Authors Okuda and Mulqueen cover the extensive and often elaborately produced Chicago area children's televison shows, along with their hosts, who became local stars of the first magnitude in the days before cable, sattelite dishes, and even UHF channels! These behind-the-scenes stories are both fascinating and riveting, and the reader can follow the rise and fall of such local, but famed legendary shows like "Garfield Goose And Friends", "Kukla, Fran & Ollie", "Ray Raynor And Friends", "B.J. And Dirty Dragon", "Bozo's Circus", "Elmer The Elephant", and "The Mulqueen's Kiddy-A-Go-Go', among many others! Readers will recall the wonderful stars of this long-gone era like Burr Tillstrom, Fran Allison, Frazier Thomas, Bob Bell, Ray Raynor, Roy Brown, Don Sandburg, John Conrad, Elaine (beautiful Pandora) Mulqueen, Bill Jackson, Mary Hartline, all the greats and many more!
Having grown up in Chicago during this era, I was unable to put down this book, and was astonished as to how many wonderful memories it brought back. The authors Ted Okuda and Jack Mulqueen have thankfully preserved for us some of Chicagoland TV's magic and history, before all traces of it vanish forever like the Buffalo!

Chicago Warriors Midnight Battles in the Windy City ReviewI spent a lot of years with John Wills in the law enforcement trenches of Detroit, a place where Christian faith is rarely a survivor. Somehow John's flourished. In Chicago Warriors, he has created a unique narrative demonstrating how the worst of man can be defeated by the best in man. It is a parable of a morality that is vanishing from the American landscape."--Paul Lindsay, author of The Fuhrer's Reserve and Traps: A Novel of the FBI

Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories (Music in American Life) ReviewDavid Whiteis' new book, "Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories," is a collection of portraits of blues performers and venues that provides a sense of the diversity of the Chicago blues scene with an emphasis on its evolution as a living tradition among the city's African-American community. There are chapters devoted to departed masters to a number of contemporary performers representing a diversity of approaches to the blues, and in the process provides an enlightening overview of a still evolving blues scene and tradition. The portraits are derived from articles that Whiteis wrote for a variety of publications including the Chicago Reader, Juke Blues and Living Blues, and it would be welcome for no other reason than making these available, but the book is more than that.
The first part of Chicago Blues is devoted to Elder Spirits, and includes chapters on Junior Wells, Sunnyland Slim and Big Walter Horton. What is surprising is how little has been written on these three and Whiteis' chapters are welcome for recounting these the lives of these pioneers and masters of the post-war Chicago blues scene. As Whiteis notes, these three mentored him as he developed an knowledge and love of the blues, and his affection for them is obvious as can be gleaned from what he states about Sunnyland Slim, "We weren't what you would call blood brothers. I don't claim to have been his intimate confidant. Nevertheless, I honestly believe that no one else ever taught me so much about life than Sunnyland Slim did. To hear that voice growl through the octaves, build into a liontine roar, and then soar into a leonine roar, and then soar into high-tenor declarations of freedom-bound blues passion -- or just spend time in the presence of this tender-hearted giant of a man -- was to learn life lessons of the most profound and lasting kind."
The Second Part, "We Gon' Pitch a Boogie Woogie!" is an examination of blues venues past and present. There is a chapter on Florence's Lounge, the neighborhood lounge where Hound Dog Taylor and Magic Slim had held regular gigs before they began their years of touring which closed in the ear;y 1980s; the celebrated Maxwell Street Market whose rich history is recounted along with the gentrification of Chicago, expansion of the Chicago campus of Maxwell Street and its destruction of this historical area with a promise of a restored and improved, but ultimately sanitized, area. Whiteis' bittersweet account of the last day of Maxwell Street brings the community that the University destroyed alive for us. The final chapter of this part, Clubbing the Current Chicago Scene, provides sketches of different venues including the Delta Fish Market and its successor, Wallace's Catfish Corner; the Starlite Lounge and the late Harmonica Khan who was a star in this neighborhood juke; and then taking in Denise LaSalle's show at East of the Ryan which includes a nice overview of her career in addition to his perceptive analysis of her oft salty performances that like those of other modern soul and blues artists transcend the dichotomy between sacred and profane.
The Next Part, Torchbearers is in Whiteis' words, "the heart of the book." The portraits of currently active performers who carry on the traditions of the elders. Perhaps these are not all major stylists but each "is representative o the music that remains prevalent on the contemporary scene, and each one's story exemplifies important facets of the `blues life' as it is lived by contemporary artists... ." Chapters devoted to Jody Williams, Bonnie Lee, Billy Branch, Sharon Lewis and Lurrie Bell, give us an insight into their personal histories, the ups and downs they have faced and how they continue to preserve with their art. It is a reminder that blues is more than "just notes" or "just a feeling," devoid of any broader context. Of course, one has to be a bit careful in objecting that the music's cultural history is obscured and challenging the success of some teenage white prodigies while veteran blacks stay in obscurity and then be labeled as an `ignorant racist," as Billy Branch, one of the most eloquent teachers of the blues as well as a blues performer of the highest order. Chapters on Bonnie Lee, who first came up under Sunnyland Slim and later was associated with the late Willie Kent and Sharon Lewis were revelatory about two women who keep doing what they love to do the most, while the chapter on Lurrie Bell detailed the travails of his life as well as his triumphs (musical and personal).
Part IV, The Soul Side of Town, is devoted to Artie `Blues Boy' White (who notes even down south some of the venues he used to play have closed), Cicero Blake and Little Scotty (the later a social activist as well as singer). The book concludes with a Coda, as Whiteis ruminates on the current state of the music and its future, observing that their seem to be new obstacles today to the music surviving, but also reminding us that the blues seems to have this ability to reinvent itself, and its new manifestations and performers may confound us and our expectations what the blues should be, "yet again reveal itself to be a musical language that, once incubated and nurtured in its cultural milieu, can expand its scope and speak to a universal audience."
Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories, is invaluable for its lively, informative portraits of a variety of performers that help us appreciate aspects of the blues life. Furthermore, it raises significant questions of what the blues is, that goes beyond the current trend of focusing on playing notes and ignoring the culture and community the blues arose out of. As Whiteis reminds us, the music is still deeply rooted there and continues to live and evolve, aiding us to appreciate the music in a deeper and more knowledgeable manner.Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories (Music in American Life) Overview

Chicago and Cook County: A Guide to Research ReviewThis is hands down the most comprehensive resource on all aspects of genealogical research in the Chicago/Cook County Illinois area bar none. I purchased this book when it was new and don't know how else I would have done as much Chicagoland area research without it. Without this book I would have had no idea where to start researching when visiting Chicago and really helped insure I got the biggest bang for the buck when there. Where Ms. Szucs really pays off is breaking out the various municipalities and even offers offbeat sources such as the Medical Examiners Office that I would NEVER have thought of and it's a good thing as I've used that as a resource twice now with great results. Yes, it would be great to have an updated edition with new area codes and telephone numbers, internet sources and the like, but I find those sources can get stale-dated pretty darned quickly! Mrs. Szucs delivers what you need to get the ball rolling and it's always important to double-check local numbers and use those available resources like Google.Chicago and Cook County: A Guide to Research Overview

Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses ReviewThis interesting and insightful book looks into one of the most famous and long-lived curses in sports; the billy goat curse of the Chicago Cubs. In October of 1945, the Chicago Cubs were playing the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Games 1-3 were held in Detroit, where the Cubs won two of the three games. Returning to Chicago, the Cubs had hopes of closing out the series in front of the hometown fans. One of the fans who came to see the Cubs was William "Billy Goat" Sianis, a Greek immigrant who owned a nearby tavern.
Sianis came to the park with two box seat tickets; one for himself and the other for his pet billy goat "Murphy". Ushers immediately tried to prevent Sianis and his goat from entering, but they failed to keep them out. Once inside, Billy and his goat made their way onto the field before the ushers intervened again. Billy and Murphy were allowed to take the seats they had purchased, but, under orders from Cubs owner Phillip K. Wrigley, Billy and Murphy were ejected from the game due to, according to Wrigley, the goat's odor. Outraged, Sianis placed a curse on the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in the World Series. The birth of the "billy goat" curse had occurred.
The Cubs eventually lost the 1945 World Series to the Tigers and Sianis sent a telegram to Wrigley stating "Who stinks now?"
From that fateful series against the Tigers until today, the Cubs have never won a pennant or played in a World Series, just as Sianis said they wouldn't. There have been close calls (1969, 1984, 1989, 1998, and 2003), but ultimately something happened to spoil the Cubs dreams, such as the black cat incident in New York in 1969, Leon Durham's misplayed ground ball in 1984, and the infamous Steve Bartman foul ball interference in 2003. Although classifed as an "Urban Legend", many Cubs fans really believe in the curse. I must say that everything that Sianis said would happen to the Cubs has happened. How much can be attributed to the curse or to just poor luck or bad play?
I enjoyed this book a great deal. Although it is relatively short, it still gives very good information about the curse and some of the other lesser-known Cubs curses, such as the curse of Fred Merkle. I highly recommend this book. Baseball fans and, more specifically, Cubs fans like myself, will enjoy this fun look at one of the most famous curses of all time and how it has affected the Cubs for sixty years.Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses Overview

Chicago Marathon (Images of Sports) ReviewI've been running since 1977 and doing marathons since 1981 and thus I thought I'd "seen it all" when it comes to running literature. Yet this book breaks new ground. I've got a shelf full of running books acquired in the passion of building up to some race or other: medical and training advice, history, personal stories, inspiration, and fiction.
The author has deftly combined all but the last into one work while adding an element (photography) where his special gift is on display. (Having run the event with a camera on numerous occasions, Britt's one-of-a-kind photos capture the "moments of truth" and emotion that define the intimate human drama of the leaders, the strivers and the "back-of-the-packers" just trying to finish.)
As a super-experienced runner (95+ marathons) and lifelong Chicago native, Britt knows whereof he writes in the advice he provides for tackling this race. Marathon neophytes as well as veterans will find valuable tips and tidbits amidst the photos. Britt's hard-won anecdotes about weather conditions and subtle course obstacles will help anyone to improve their performance, especially in the all-important realm of course visualization and mental rehearsal.
"Chicago Marathon: Images of Sports" also showcases the previously obscure history of the event through its lost roots in events of 1905-1909 -- an element I found utterly fascinating. (With the exception of one book on the history of the Boston Marathon, this is the only volume I know of to include such cross-generational perspective on a major running event.)
Those familiar with the city will see an entirely different landscape (dirt roads, no real suburbs, old cars, fewer people), peppered with a few familiar landmarks still standing. Those with even a passing a knowledge of fitness will be amused by the bizarre customs Britt uncovered in his research (e.g., strychnine and alcohol served by misguided helpers, a 96-mile Milwaukee-to-Chicago 'ultra' event, a race leader who lost by falling asleep at an aide station, choking dust from unpaved streets, freight trains that crossed the course almost halting the race in its tracks.)
While small in format, the book has the production values to hold its own on a coffee table, e.g., as take-off point for discussion (or post-race bragging -- gift-giving spouses take note!) As other reviewers have pointed out, the pictures are all in black and white, however I found the net effect was to draw comparisons between the early 1900's and early 2000's races. In one sense, not much has changed about the human demands of the marathon challenge.
Mr. Britt has done something unique here that will be of interest on many levels well beyond those running (or planning to run) the Chicago Marathon.Chicago Marathon (Images of Sports) Overview

A Chicago Tavern: A Goat, a Curse, and the American Dream. ReviewI had an existential "A-ha!" moment in Rick Kogan's tribute to "A Chicago Tavern: a Goat, A Curse, and the American Dream."
Kogan says:
Around 1950, there were almost 7,000 taverns in Chicago. In 2006, there were fewer than 1,250.
This reviewer basically learned how to read while accompanying my father to visit his friends at Peg's Tavern in Hinckley, IL (They would give me nickels and quarters to play the juke box - so I learned P a t s y C l i n e and all her friends and all their songs.) There was a real sense of community and camaraderie among the regulars, like an Irish village pub/hub, that one doesn't encounter in the "fern bar" Chains of today, contributing, one can extrapolate, to the loss of neighborliness and sense of community in current culture. (See also Bowling Alone : The Collapse and Revival of American Community)
Kogan tells about a family of Greek immigrants who created a place where all collars, blue, white, and clerical meet and mingle; a tale of a Billy Goat's tail and the "truth" about the "curse" on the Chicago Cubs. Making appearances in text and photos are the Sianis family; various animal goats; various old goat humans: Mike Royko and Harry Caray; Aykroyd & Belushi (this is the real deal - where the "Cheezborger, Cheezborger! No fries . . . chips!" were made;) some presidents and other politicians; and even that Stinkier- than-a-Goat Devil & Demolisher of the 2003 Pennant Hope, Steve Bartman.
Docked a star because Kogan's choice to write the whole thing, even the historical stuff from 1916, in the present tense, riled this reviewer worse than a whole gaggle of sorority girl foo-foo umbrella drinks.

Hour Chicago: Twenty-five 60-Minute Self-guided Tours of Chicago's Great Architecture and Art ReviewOther guidebooks can tell you where to eat, where to stay, what to wear or what plays to go to. But if you love cities because of their art and architecture, if you want to get off the tour bus, THIS is the guidebook you want.
The author is the perfect guide. After a few pages, you feel like you've gotten to know her, and you're eager to get her opinions on whatever she shows you on the next page. She's not afraid to say when she thinks a building is dull, which is a nice change from the hype of most tourist guides. But when she likes something, it's obvious. Somehow she can explain what makes a painting, sculpture or building great, in just a few choice words. You get the feeling she knows way more than she has space to share. But "share" is the word. She doesn't talk down to the reader, but she also knows that not everyone has a masters in fine art and architecture. There's a great glossary and good maps, which you'll need, because this guide doesn't stop at the Art Institute and the Loop. It takes you into the neighborhoods for galleries, architecture and smaller museums with collections that are world-class, but are overshadowed by the Art Institute.
The book is the perfect size for a backpack or fanny pack -- you can tell it's meant to be USED. The prose is clean and direct, and should not be a problem for tourists whose 1st language is not English.
It's organized into short tours that you really can take if you only have an hour, but you can also string them together if you're lucky enough to have a weekend or a lifetime. (This book is not just for tourists. It's must for people who live here, especially if you already think you know the city.)
What I like most about this book is that it seems to have a special place in its heart for the person who is by himself or herself. Anyone who's travelled to a great city alone has felt at times the lack of a companion to share the experience with. You find yourself wanting to turn to someone and see your excitement reflected back. In "Hour Chicago,"that person is the author. You feel like, whether she's physically there or not, she wrote this book for you and is hoping to see her excitement reflected back in you.Hour Chicago: Twenty-five 60-Minute Self-guided Tours of Chicago's Great Architecture and Art Overview

Graveyards of Chicago: The People, History, Art, and Lore of Cook County Cemeteries ReviewThere are some who think it's weird to tour cemeteries. They're missing the serene tribute to a city's history -- graveyards are neighborhoods and time capsules; art museums and in some cases the final repositories of enduring secrets.
Hucke and Bielski serve as knowledgeable and respectful tour guides for some of the most impressively landscaped, richly historical acres within and adjacent to the city's urban sprawl. It's a field trip through bold headlines and unsung achievements represented by a carved catalog of famous -- and infamous (at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, mob boss Sam Giancana's mausoleum is padlocked) -- names.
The book follows Lake Claremont's practical design of dividing interesting sites by sections of the city map. I know from firsthand experience that you can spend the whole day in the Metro North area touring renowned Graceland Cemetery (Chicago's second oldest burial ground, final home to many whose surnames -- Field, Getty, Palmer, Kinzie, Kimball, Goodman, Sears, Armour, and Pullman to drop just a few -- are synonymous with Chicago's growth); or Rosehill, within whose 350 acres lie bicycle king Ignaz Schwinn, water magnates Otis Ward Hinkley and George Schmitt, shoe guru Milton Florsheim, "merchandising arch-enemies" Aaron Montgomery Ward and Richard Warren Sears, and 14-year old Bobby Franks, murdered in 1924 by University of Chicago students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb.
Hucke and Bielski devote much-deserved attention to the artistic aspect of grave markers and cemetery architecture across a span of more than a century's worth of changing styles. Additional highlights: more unusual burials (attorney Clarence Darrow's ashes scattered in Jackson Park; musician Steve Goodman's cremains under home plate in his beloved Wrigley Field); a nod to necropolises in outlying areas, and a partial directory of Chicagoland cemeteries. This unusual guide is unusually enlightening on many levels fundamental to Chicago's identity.Graveyards of Chicago: The People, History, Art, and Lore of Cook County Cemeteries Overview

Ethnic Chicago: A Multicultural Portrait ReviewThis is a very well written, well organized and interesting book about the ethnic history of Chicago. Starting from the early settlers, the authors write about the history of different ethnic groups such as Poles, Ukranians, Germans, Chinese, Japanese and Greeks among others. Most, if not all chapters are written by someone from the ethnic group in question, and each chapter seems to be very well researched. I admire the neutral and scientific writing style. In other words, there is no hint of side taking, even when the authors describe recent and painful conflicts between ethnic groups. This is just how a research book should be.
The book is easy to read, and I found it very illuminating. It is a very good source of information about Chicago. The book traces the history of different ethnic groups in Chicago through the 19th and 20th century, their struggles for adaptation, their neighborhoods, occupations, and life styles. After reading the book, I feel I appreciate the diversity of this great city even more. I learned many things I did not know about this city from this book, and I keep looking for the neighborhoods and landmarks mentioned in the book with interest.
The book is also a very good source of reliable information about American history in general, because the immigration patterns in Chicago and the process of adaptation of the immigrants to American life occured in somewhat similar ways to other large cities, and in several chapters, the authors discuss the immigration of a certain ethnic group to the USA in general, as well as to Chicago in particular.
Finally, I found the book very helpful in terms of information about recent world history. The reasons that led the ethnic groups in question to immigrate to USA and Chicago (the push factors) are shortly discussed in each chapter, and this gives the reader an overall idea about the recent history of each of the nations in question.
The editors of the book did a very good job in ensuring continuity across chapters. Even though each chapter is written by a different author, I did not feel any gaps between chapters, and did not think there were any problems of continuity.
This looked like a thick book with 600+ pages, but I finished it in a few weeks, and I think this was time well spent.Ethnic Chicago: A Multicultural Portrait Overview

The Chicago World's Fair of 1893: A Photographic Record (Dover Architectural) ReviewBeautiful photos and thoughtful text. This book does a nice job of condensing the story and mood of the fair into a quick and easy to read format. I own several books about the fair and while some have more photos, this is still my favorite. A must have for those interested in the Columbian Exposition, Chicago history and architecture. The vastness of the White City is something I can scarcely imagine. I especially appreciated that the author details the fates of many of the fair's artistic treasures as well as discussing the changed landscape of the geographical site of the fair. The Chicago World's Fair of 1893: A Photographic Record (Dover Architectural) Overview

Walking Chicago: 31 Tours of the Windy City's Classic Bars, Scandalous Sites, Historic Architecture, Dynamic Neighborhoods, and Famous Lakeshore ReviewI would strongly suggest this book is not useful to Chicago visitors.
It has 31 tours, more than a typical visitor can do in a few days, but does not offer effective ways to prioritize/connect. The walks are poorly indexed (yes, they are numbered from South to North and there is a "per theme" index, and a minimalistic "connecting walks" line at the end of each tour, but that is all).
I've tried to use 5 different tours during a short first time visit and not once I finished the walk as recommended (because the routes are not efficient in covering the interesting parts of the city).
There are enough typos and mistakes (swapping "right" for "left" and "51st St" for "55th St" - try to follow the Washington Park or Hyde Park tours, for example) sprinkled all over. Not a big deal in a regular guide, but crucial in a walking tour.
Try to walk half mile across Washington Park "in the Southeast direction", without any reference and a bad map and end up exactly where the tour picks up on the other side (where the book assumes you are at a very exact place, but you have no idea where it is).
The access/transit info is mostly correct, but minimalistic enough to be useless.
Even when the author is "witty", it is at the expense of function. Millennium Park is one of the most touristy places in Chicago (no need for directions) but he spends several pages making up names for the landmarks and mixing real and "funny" names. What does the reader win in exchange for the confusion? Viagra fountain jokes. Then, in the same walk, crossing Grant Park, when there is opportunity for a guide book to add real value, the text is vague and sparse.
I don't mean to say it is all garbage. But the purpose of a walking tour book is to be read while you use it walking the city. For that purpose, in a city as easy to walk as Chicago, you would be better off with regular travel book and common sense than trying to follow the tours in this book.
