Annotated Bibliography: World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893 ReviewI happen to like World's Fairs--they are short-lived, sometimes exaggerated snapshots of a country's self-image at a particular moment in history. How America viewed herself in 1893 was beautifully summarized in the "White City" erected in Chicago for the World's Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair) for the six months of May through October, 1893. The authors are a retired couple living in Albuquerque and it's obvious each has an aficionado's love of their subject. The 400th (all right, 401st) anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World produced an outpouring of guidebooks, scholarly monographs, music, and just plain kitsch souvenirs that perhaps wasn't equalled until the 1939 New York World's Fair, and they are carefully recorded in this book in summary paragraphs, occasionally accompanied by a black-and-white illustration, together with an estimate of each item's (1992) value when known. A must for serious collectors of late 19th-century Americana, as well as just plain "buffs" like myself. In 1999, the authors published a Supplement of comparable size (just over 400 pages), which includes a Master Index covering both volumes.Annotated Bibliography: World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893 Overview

Exploring the Chicago World's Fair, 1893 Review"Exploring the Chicago World's Fair, 1893" is a good book, but it didn't have an ounce of happiness to it. Under the circumstances, I understand that Dora wouldn't be running with joy throughout the fair, but still, have her smile at the sights and sounds every so often. I find it hard to believe they would build a fair, which reminds me of a modern theme park from today, and then tear it down - how sad. Also, we never found out why Da Pomeroy's letters never made it to his wife and children, what job Mama Pomeroy took to make money for the rent and food, after she quit being Little Egypt, etc. I enjoy Laurie Lawlor's writing, but I am disappointed with the American Sisters series for two reasons: there isn't an Epilogue, so you haven't a clue how the Pomeroy's fair in the future, and second there isn't a historical explanation of the fair. If you don't care to learn about the historical facts of the Chicago World's in 1893, but just want to see what it was like from a child's point of view, then I recommend it - if you want to learn history, then don't bother.Exploring the Chicago World's Fair, 1893 Overview

Grand Illusions: Chicago's World's Fair of 1893 ReviewThis book was published by the Chicago Historical Society in conjunction with its exhibition of the same name, which ran from May 1, 1993 (the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Chicago World's Fair) until July 17, 1994. After the preface, the book is divided into four sections, by different essayists: MEMORY AND THE WHITE CITY -- how the fair was remembered through souvenirs and publications, and how scholarly writings perpetuated its Beaux-Arts architectural influence into not only subsequent world's fairs, but also American cities, until the modernist backlash of the 1930's. BUILDING AN ILLUSION: THE DESIGN OF THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION -- the debate over how best to transform the swampland of Jackson Park into a White City symbolic of Chicago's recovery from the great fire of 1871, including about a page on each of the major structures of the Court of Honor. FIXING THE IMAGE: PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION -- the conflict between the organizers' "official" photographer C.D. Arnold and the legions of fairgoers arriving with their own photographic equipment, ranging from cumbersome tripod-mounted large-plate cameras to the newly invented Kodak "C" handheld box cameras. A CULTURAL FRANKENSTEIN? THE CHICAGO WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION OF 1893 - since one of the book's sponsors is "The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency", this is the obligatory race/class/gender chapter, focusing on the protests made by African-Americans, Native Americans, "Esquimaux", Dahomeyans, etc. Although the exposition had its own Board of Lady Managers, not to mention a Woman's Building devoted exclusively to female accomplishment in the arts and sciences, women are portrayed as marginalized and oppressed. Even the popular Midway (entertainment section) is criticized for making nonwhite cultures seem "exotic" or "savage" (which to the Chicagoan of 1893, they probably were). However, the illustrations here, as well as throughout the book, are excellent -- the color plates are particularly well reproduced. It gives you all of the information that you could need, and more. The book is illustrated with wonderful pictures of the buildings and places that were important to Chicago Day. There is also a whole section of the book that is dedicated to the night-time ceremonies of Chicago Day, and the book gives you detailed pictures and information about the floats and fireworks that were in the ceremonies. There are also pictures of the people involved in making Chicago Day happen. Along with all of these things there are statistics showing you what a record breaking day Chicago Day was. It also gives you a feel for the overall Fair, so while learning about a certain part of the Fair, you learn about the whole amazing event. Chicago's Classical Architecture: The Legacy of the White City (IL) (Images of America) ReviewThis is a terrific book on one of the world's great cities for architecture, with tons of beautiful historic and modern photos. I'm amazed it hadn't been done before now - it's long overdue. It's also a great companion for "The Devil in the White City." That book does a great job of describing the White City, but doesn't show it. This book has pictures of the White City that most people have probably never seen. But it doesn't stop there - the rest of the book shows the buildings that were inspired by the 1893 Fair's classical design. Plan of Chicago ReviewThe most notable aspect of the 1909 Plan of Chicago was that the author's (Daniel Burnham) profession was not exclusively city planning. He was a business man. He viewed his plan for the City of Chicago as the best way to create an exceptional business and civic environment. It worked! Many elements of modern downtown Chicago that make it a truly great, world class city, are a direct result of Burnham's vision. Celebrating the New World: Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1893 (American Ways Series) ReviewAfter reading Devil In The White City, a book about the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893, I was drawn to find out a bit more about it. I got a copy of Celebrating the New World - Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1893 by Robert Muccigrosso from the library the other day, and I think this is another book that suffers a bit from what I ended up reading first...
Contents: Setting for a Celebration; The City on the Prairie; A Gathering of Architects; "You Must See This Fair"; A Community of Ideas; For Some, A Harder Struggle; Satisfying Popular Tastes; Legacies of a City of Dreams; A Note on Sources; Index
I'll grant that this book is not meant to be done in a style of Devil in the White City. That was a storytelling approach, and this is more of a scholarly coverage of the event and what led up to it. If I had read this one first, I'm not sure I would have gotten the full impact of the gargantuan task that was undertaken with this fair, and how many obstacles had to be overcome to make it all come together. I did learn a bit more about how hard the women's movement worked to get a voice in the event, and how African-Americans were virtually ignored. There was also quite a bit of religious ecumenicalism that was a topic during the fair, and I was totally unaware of that angle. Still, the people in this book are really just names. In my prior reading, they were people with feelings, depth, and color... Here, the Ferris Wheel is just a contraption. There, it was the cornerstone of the fair meant to surpass Paris and the Eiffel Tower.
If you've never been exposed to the Chicago World's Fair, this would be an OK place to start your reading. But you won't come away with the awe and wonder of what was actually accomplished. There are other books that do a far better job in putting flesh on the people behind it all...Celebrating the New World: Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1893 (American Ways Series) Overview

The World's Columbian Exposition: The Chicago World's Fair of 1893 ReviewI found this book quite fascinating. I have been reading Erik Larson's wonderful "The Devil in the White City" but since that comes with virtually no illustrations, I bought this book primarily for the photographs, of which it has a great many and which go a long way to conveying just how huge this fair was (there were 735,000+ visitors on the day that had the highest attendance rate).
It also fills in information Larson's book lacks about the exhibits themselves, the individual state and country buildings and the Midway as well as statistics on how much food was served every day and how many bathrooms were available plus it shows pictures of the moving sidewalk that took visitors who arrived by boat to the fair itself; the Xerxes telescope; many displays and decorations made out of corn and oranges; the foreigners who were part of the Midway attractions; the Wooded Island; the first automated paint sprayer (with which a crew of three was able to paint the interior of the entire Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building in only six weeks); a lifesize statue of a wooly mammoth, then thought to have been the largest animal to have ever walked the earth; and several pictures of the Ferris Wheel under construction. It also has a table showing what attractions were available and how much they cost and one indicating which architect designed which building (something Larson's readers will appreciate).
The only real problem I had with the book (and the reason for four stars instead of five) is that it's printed on regular paper stock and not on glossy paper so the photographs are somewhat blurry and grainy and not as crisp as they would have been had the publisher used different paper. Also the book provides a copy of the map of the fairgrounds given by Montgomery Ward to it's customers but this map is too small plus it's printed so that part of it lies in the book's center crease. I think it would have been better if the publisher had had a map drawn and used that or had found one that provided more information.There is a three dimensional map of the Exposition available on the Web -- it would have been nice if something like that had been included as well since it's impossible to get a comprehensive, birdseye view of the Fair (nevermind one in relation to Chicago and the surrounding community) from just the photographs. There is also a bibliography and a somewhat incomplete index. I don't know how this book compares to other pictorial books on the Exposition but it was fine for what I needed and had lots of bits of interesting trivia besides.The World's Columbian Exposition: The Chicago World's Fair of 1893 Overview

The Chicago World's Fair of 1893: A Photographic Record (Dover Architectural) ReviewBeautiful photos and thoughtful text. This book does a nice job of condensing the story and mood of the fair into a quick and easy to read format. I own several books about the fair and while some have more photos, this is still my favorite. A must have for those interested in the Columbian Exposition, Chicago history and architecture. The vastness of the White City is something I can scarcely imagine. I especially appreciated that the author details the fates of many of the fair's artistic treasures as well as discussing the changed landscape of the geographical site of the fair.The Chicago World's Fair of 1893: A Photographic Record (Dover Architectural) Overview
