To Sleep with the Angels: The Story of a Fire ReviewMany books have been written about real-life tragedies, and in this sense, Cowan and Kuenster's book is no different. However, there is a thin line in these type of books between boring the reader by burying the human aspect of the story with an overload of factual material and becoming nothing more than a non-fiction hankie weeper. Quite a few books have disappointed me in the past by straying to either one side or the other. Not so with this one. It is a solid piece of reporting that does not lose the human dimension of the tragedy. Nor does it obscure the investigation and the facts with too much emphasis on the human dimension.
The fire at Our Lady of the Angels was one of the worst tragedies to strike America, made even more so in that the vast majority of its victims were innocent children. The authors follow the story from the day it occured to the fire itself and the heroic efforts of the fire department to the later delegation of blame and recriminations from what was seen as a bureaucratic conspiracy. In doing so they manage to bring the reader into the story not merely as a spectator but almost as a fellow reporter, sharing not only facts, but also conjectures and whispers plus personal items about the victims, always careful always to straddle the line between objectivity and thje trap of a "crusading" journalism. By letting the story speak for itself, they bring it home all the more forcefully, to where no one who reads it will remain unaffected.
This book should also serve as a warning against the false sense of security that this sort of thing cannot happen again. There are still many schools, public and private, at risk, and this is a book that should be read by every parent with children still in school, and not only during Fire Prevention Week.To Sleep with the Angels: The Story of a Fire Overview

A Century of Urban Life: The Norwegians in Chicago Before 1930 ReviewThis book is an excellent resource especially if you had Norwegian relatives in Chicago during this time. The book covers information about different Norwegian neighborhoods, including maps, pictures, and information about churches, and social clubs. I used this book to research more about my geneology. The Outfit Review"The Outfit" is a well written, thoroughly comprehensive look at the post-Capone history of organized crime in the city of Chicago. Gus Russo does an excellent job of leaving no stone unturned as he chronicles the Outfit's activity from the jailing of Capone to its decline in the 90s. Along the way we meet the gangsters who made the Chicago mob rich and famous: Tony "Joe Batters" Accardo, Paul "the Waiter" Ricca, "Curly" Humphries, Johnny Roselli,Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik, and Sam "Mooney" Giancana. Russo discusses the role of each in making the Chicago Syndicate the power it was in the world of organized crime.
Russo's breezy style makes "The Outfit" an absolute joy to read, deftly mixing facts and ancedotes like a master chef. Read about the takeover of IATSE, the Hollywood union, and the infiltration of the mob into the world of the Hollywood studios; the Mob's entry and takeover of Las Vegas; the infiltration into the Teamsters and the scheming of the Outfit to fix the 1960 presidential election and what happened when they were doublecrossed. It was by no means a smooth ride - along the way Russo details the eforts of law enforcement to balance the books, so to speak, with the result that the Outfit always had to keep scheming, keep looking, for new rackets and businesses to infiltrate. Russo keeps the pages turning with a compelling style that makes the book's 550 pages seem like 100 when you hit the end.
Few books even attempt to cover the history of the Chicago Mob after Al Capone left the scene. Fewer still are this enjoyuable. A must for crime historians and those just interested in a good book. The Outfit Overview

Route 66 In Chicago (IL) (Images of America) ReviewThis wonderful little book is part of the Images of America series, and focuses on Route 66 - The Mother Road. It is chock full of images of the road, of the buildings and sites that it traveled past in Chicago, and of the restaurants and motels that lined it.
This is a neat little book! The pictures are all crystal clear, and have well-written captions. If you are interested in Route 66 and/or the Chicago of yesteryear, then you would be well-advised to give this book a look. I found it to be an excellent resource, and think that you will too. City of American Dreams: A History of Home Ownership and Housing Reform in Chicago, 1871-1919 (Historical Studies of Urban America) ReviewI don't usually read books of historical analysis but my love for Chicago combined with the intrigue of the title pulled me in. Garb has a fascinating way of telling the stories of late 19th, early 20th century Chicagoan families; weaving into the discussion of neighborhoods the stories of people's strategies and struggles to own their own homes. I feel a much deeper sense of understanding Chicago, and love the pictures of that era that are now firmly set in my mind, thanks to this book. I recommend this important book to anyone who owns a home in the Chicago area, or to anyone who just wants to know more about the fascinating history of Chicago.City of American Dreams: A History of Home Ownership and Housing Reform in Chicago, 1871-1919 (Historical Studies of Urban America) Overview

Father Mac: The Life and Times of Ignatius D. McDermott, Co-Founder of Chicago's Famed Haymarket Center ReviewMonsignor Ignatius McDermott, or 'Father Mac' as he is affectionately known, was born in Chicago in 1909, and grew up immersed in Democratic Party politics and the Roman Catholic religion on Chicago's predominantly Irish south side. He was the youngest of eight children, the son of a devout Catholic businessman. Monsignor McDermott's older brother, James, was also a devout Catholic and an influential attorney who rose to prominence in the powerhouse Chicago Democratic Party of the 1940's and 1950's. At a pivotal time in Chicago politics, James McDermott nearly became the Cook County Democratic Party chairman and a mayoral candidate; titles that ultimately were won by a tough and ambitious Cook County Clerk named Richard J. Daley.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist and political commentator Thomas F. Roeser has presented an inspiring and informative portrait of one of Chicago's greatest humanitarians, Father Mac, the 'Apostle to the Addicted.' His story ranges from the rough and tumble Chicago of the early 1900's to the thriving capital of the Midwest as it stands today. The biography was a labor of love (all proceeds go to the Haymarket Center for treatment of alcohol addition that Monsignor McDermott co-founded,) but had some unusual challenges.
At a recent luncheon honoring Father Mac, Roeser explained: "For over four years, I met with Father Mac for dinner once a week over dinner, and he would recount places, names and events from his life. Every time I thought I had the book done, he would come up with another story that was so incredible I had to add it," Indeed, the book is brimming with stories ranging from Father Mac's encounters with the high and mighty, like the Chicago mayor 'Big Bill' Thompson, to the most despondent residents of Skid Row.
Ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest in 1936 (his first Mass at Visitation Church was attended by Mayor Ed Kelly and most, if not all, of the City Council!), throughout his life Father Mac has inspired all who meet him with his wit, charm, and sincerity. But it was his efforts on behalf of the homeless that distinguished Father Mac from any other priest Chicago has ever seen. Roaming Chicago's Skid Row on West Madison Street like Mother Teresa roamed the streets of Calcutta, Father Mac approached the winos, junkies, and homeless men and women with respect, treating them as human beings, seeing them as God's children. His strategy was to gain their trust and cooperation to get them sobered up and off the streets (several of Father Mac's remarkable success stories are recounted in the book) and it worked.
After a lifetime of work in Chicago's Catholic parishes, at Catholic Charities and in Chicago youth homes, the Archdiocese of Chicago encourage Father Mac to retire. Instead, Father Mac borrowed over one million dollars, and 'retired' to a dilapidated, rat infested building on the near west side of Chicago, turning it into Haymarket Center, today one of the largest and most successful treatment centers for alcohol addiction in America.
Throughout his life, Father Mac put his political connections to good use on behalf of the downtrodden. He successfully convinced the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois to revise their statutes on public drunkenness, essentially decriminalizing alcoholism and putting in place the opportunity for social services agencies to begin treating alcoholics rather than jailing them. When the Illinois legislature threatened to cut funding for daycare centers for the children of recovering alcoholics, Father Mac brought the kids to the state capitol and onto the floor of the assembly. With the children literally in their arms, legislators voted to keep the programs intact.
The breadth and depth of Father Mac's experiences results in a story that appeals to several audiences. Roeser's analysis of the political landscape in Chicago from 1920 to 1960 concisely describes how the Democratic Party grew to dominance. Father Mac's involvement in charity brought him into direct contact with the movers and shakers of his time -- Presidents, Mayors, legislators, Bishops, and his fellow priests -- and many humorous stories are recounted. But more important than Chicago history, Father Mac's story is about Haymarket Center today: the programs and the people who are saving lives and giving hope to the hopeless every day.
An avid sports fan, especially Chicago teams like his beloved White Sox, Father Mac's personal sports recollections cover the entire century, and are some of the best stories in the book. Over lunch, I asked Father Mac how many sporting events he attended in his 94 years. "Oh gosh," he said settling back in his chair. His eyes lit up and a wry smile crossed his face. Perhaps he was remembering the Babe Ruth home run ball he "caught" as a kid, or his days as mascot for the Chicago Cardinals as the NFL was being born, or any one of thousands of sunny days in Comiskey Park, Soldier Field, or at Catholic League high school playoff games. After a minute of silent pondering, Father Mac turned to me, chuckled, and with a smile a mile wide said, "A lot of 'em. I've been to a lot."
"Father Mac got me again," Tom Roeser said with a smile when I saw him recently. (Father Mac is notorious for his humorous quips and one liners, so I was ready for a good one!) Roeser explained that since the book has been published, Father Mac keeps coming up with new stories, including the time that the famous magician Harry Houdini visited Mundelein Seminary in Chicago. Houdini's advice to the young priest stayed with him his entire life: "Keep your eye on the ball," said Houdini, "Keep your eye on the ball."
The 'ball' Father Mac kept his eye on can best be described by the motto he adopted as a young Priest, a quote from St. Vincent de Paul, another pioneer dedicated to the care of the urban poor and sick. "When you no longer burn with love," said St. Vincent, "others around you will die of the cold." Father Mac's heart has burned like a beacon for over a century in Chicago, and thanks to this inspiring and entertaining biography, his faith, hope and charity will not be forgotten...
Karl Maurer is a CPA, political consultant, and a volunteer for several Catholic and social charities... He writes from New Lenox, a suburb southwest of Chicago.Father Mac: The Life and Times of Ignatius D. McDermott, Co-Founder of Chicago's Famed Haymarket Center Overview

Crossing the Class and Color Lines: From Public Housing to White Suburbia ReviewThis book is a good primer on the Chicago public housing desegregation lawsuit known as Gautreaux, and on the mobility program resulting from that lawsuit. Under the Gautreaux mobility program, thousands of families moved from low-income Chicago neighborhoods into white, middle-class suburbs. This book charts the progress of these suburban pioneers--both the good (e.g., safer communities and better schools), and the bad (e.g., isolation and racial harassment). The authors examine the results of studies conducted in the early and late 1980's, studies that focused on the issues of safety, social contacts, schooling, and jobs. The book shows just how radically the Gautreaux families' lives changed--and, for the most part, improved. In so doing, the authors debunk the "culture of poverty" myth--the notion that low-income African-American families are too dysfunctional to seize opportunities to improve their lives. Instead, argue the authors, low-income families can thrive in any "geography of opportunity"--any place where they find real opportunities to improve their lives. This book is best suited for advocates not already familiar with Gautreaux--to a large extent it repackages studies reported years ago. But it is an important book for the general public, and for policy makers who care about improving the lives of society's most vulnerable citizens.Crossing the Class and Color Lines: From Public Housing to White Suburbia Overview

The Common Place of Law: Stories from Everyday Life (Chicago Series in Law and Society) ReviewThis book is accessible to many different audiences and is profound in its content. It would be an excellent book for undergraduate education, legal education or, even for pleasure reading. The anecdotal chapters interspersed with the analysis of the role of law in the lives or ordinary Americans makes this sophisticated book about the sociology of law in contemporary society one that should have staying power in the academy as well as more popular venues. What it has to say about law -- that Americans have a complex and sometimes contradictory relationship with the legal system and its promise of justice -- is not surprising as much as it is affirming and explanatory of so much of what we experience these days in the media and popular culture. The method the authors use to tease their thesis is rigorous and convincing, a model of scholarship for students and professionals. The Common Place of Law is a book to which I will refer and which I will reread for years. The Common Place of Law: Stories from Everyday Life (Chicago Series in Law and Society) Overview

Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront ReviewHere is the story the subtitle suggests: Chicagoans gradually realized that the lands fronting Lake Michigan were more than mere wastelands to be utilized variously by industrialists and conventioneers, and this realization led citizens from A. Montgomery Ward down to the plainest of the plain to do battle with a series of regimes which seemed to have a very odd construction of the phrase, from the city charter, "forever open, free and clear". It is the people, not the government of Chicago, whom we should thank that parts of Grant, Jackson, and Lincoln Parks are still "open, free and clear".
Beyond her immediate theme, however, Lois Wille has written an excellent concise introduction to the history of Chicago, which will especially appeal to those who approach history from the viewpoint of non-conformism. And in a city like Chicago, you're either part of the Machine or a non-conformist.
Lois Wille was a colleague of Mike Royko, all the way from the Chicago Daily News days. She has all of his creativity and productive skepticism, and, in her own way, did just as much to worry and afflict the destructive establishmentarians who by fair means and foul seem to wind up governing the City of Chicago.Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront Overview

Chicago Warriors Midnight Battles in the Windy City ReviewI spent a lot of years with John Wills in the law enforcement trenches of Detroit, a place where Christian faith is rarely a survivor. Somehow John's flourished. In Chicago Warriors, he has created a unique narrative demonstrating how the worst of man can be defeated by the best in man. It is a parable of a morality that is vanishing from the American landscape."--Paul Lindsay, author of The Fuhrer's Reserve and Traps: A Novel of the FBI

The War of 1812 (The Chicago History of American Civilization) ReviewI read this for a graduate course covering special readings in military history. Coles does an excellent job in relating the causes and consequences of an often overlooked war in the U.S. history. Coles praises the usual individuals associated with the War of 1812 (Scott, Jackson, Isaac Hull, Perry, Brock, Tecumseh) and castigates the usual suspects as well (Wilkinson, Wm. Hull, Dearborn, Procter, and James Madison and his cabinet save Monroe). There exists some errors of omission (Coles never explains why Laffite supported Jackson at New Orleans and barely covers the war west of Lake Michigan save for one brief mention). Overall, a excellent read, especially in regards to naval operations. For a more detailed analysis, I would recommend Mahon's treatment on the war.The War of 1812 (The Chicago History of American Civilization) Overview

He tries to show the key aspects that brought the people a sense of nation. All Cunliffe's writing revolves around questions of nationhood, national identity, national peculiarity, national culture, national iconography, national tradition. He sees the nationality riddles as they must properly be seen: as Ultimately intelligible only in a comparative context. Cunliffe has the advantage of being able to look at the United states from a distance without the usually egocentrism that most American authors have about our own history. The Nation Takes Shape: 1789-1837 (The Chicago History of American Civilization) Overview

Filibustering: A Political History of Obstruction in the House and Senate (Chicago Studies in American Politics) ReviewKoger's book on Congressional obstruction is essentially a Master's thesis on the topic. The book uses filibuster in the broadest sense to refer to all types of obstruction including threats of filibusters, quorum calls, disappearing quorums, introducing multiple amendments, motions to adjourn, and other tricks. It seeks to quantify, categorize, and analyze the "filibuster" in two periods: the historical Senate prior to 1901 and the modern Senate ever since.
Koger does a nice job of giving us all of the different types of obstruction and some clear examples of when they were used, though it is a little difficult to keep up with the various rules changes. However, Koger does do a good job describing the changes that brought us to the current state of play: the use of Senate holds and the transition from defeating filibusters by attrition (wearing out the filibustering party) to addressing them by accommodation and outrage. That largely occurred during Mike Mansfield's time as Senate Majority leader in the 1960s and 1970s. The author also demonstrates that obstruction is not some hallowed institution of the Senate and, in fact, has more historical underpinnings in the House than the Senate. It will give you a reason to roll your eyes when you hear Senators of either political party describe why minority filibusters are so important to the world's "greatest" deliberative body.
Unfortunately for those concerned about Congressional gridlock, the book also shows how previous efforts at reform have done little to limit the filibuster and in many ways enhanced it by institutionalizing it. Only radical reform in the House prior to 1900, extremely unlikely in the modern day Senate, successfully snuffed out filibuster activity.
The book is a quick read and I recommend it for any student of Congress.Filibustering: A Political History of Obstruction in the House and Senate (Chicago Studies in American Politics) Overview

The Birth of the Republic, 1763-89 (The Chicago History of American Civilization) ReviewEdmund Morgan remains America's most readable colonial historian after a half-century of writing. This short volume is still my favorite book about the American Revolution. Written in clear, readable prose that anyone with half-a-brain could understand and enjoy, "The Birth of the Republic" covers all the major bases from 1763 to the Constitutional Convention in 1789. Primarily a political history, readers seeking for a military history should look elsewhere. But for almost fifty years, this book has remained in print, luring readers into a deeper appreciation of our most important piece of history: when the American colonies began to separate themselves from the British Empire, deciding that one's political liberties were more sacred than loyalty to a crown. While in retrospect we can now see that there was little tyranny actually being practiced against the colonies, the fear itself of what dangerous precedent might bring remains with us today. A truly marvelous book, both for a general audience and for those with historical awareness. I first read this book as a student; now, as a history teacher, I give it to my own students with the greatest of anticipated joy: that they too will find this short book as wonderful as any they have ever read. The Birth of the Republic, 1763-89 (The Chicago History of American Civilization) Overview

To Serve and Collect: Chicago Politics and Police Corruption from the Lager Beer Riot to the Summerdale Scandal ReviewI'm an avowed Chicago history buff and found references in this book that simply cannot be found anywhere else. The bibliography alone has led to me several other books on the topic, which is appreciated. Really brought the city to life, and made you want to search out the street corners in question. I found myself asking older acquaintances if they ever met Richie Morrison.
However I have to say the publishers did not do their job here. This book is poorly edited, suffering from simple errors such as misspellings (it's ward heeler, not ward healer), and in general confusing to those of us unfamiliar with the arcane characters filling the pages. I often found myself having to backtrack to figure out who the author was referring to -- a problem compounded by the numerous Irish names and confusing nomenclature. To Serve and Collect: Chicago Politics and Police Corruption from the Lager Beer Riot to the Summerdale Scandal Overview

Free to Die for Their Country: The Story of the Japanese American Draft Resisters in World War II (Chicago Series in Law and Society) ReviewThe Japanese American draft resisters responded to Pearl Harbor not with an ultra-nationalism for the America that had treated them and their families so unjustly, but with a principled insistence on America's higher ideals. By vindicating that choice, Professor Muller's work helps to preserve for all of us the same choice of responses in the wake of 9/11. For many Americans, especially Asian Americans and Arab Americans, waving the flag today combines and conflates a message of patriotism with a historically well-founded fear that we will be counted as less than fully American when America, the one and only nation we love and call home, faces a time of crisis. In the face of these conflated meanings, it is only with a free conscience that an American can ever hope to invest a choice to dedicate his life to his country with the meaning he intends. The resisters remind us that in a time of national crisis, the freedom of conscience is the most precious freedom of all.Free to Die for Their Country: The Story of the Japanese American Draft Resisters in World War II (Chicago Series in Law and Society) Overview

Great Chicago Fires: Historic Blazes That Shaped a City (Illinois) ReviewThis book discusses such conflagrations as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Iroquois Theater Fire, Columbian Exposition Fire, Chicago Stockyards Fire, etc. The book is full of pictures, some of which have apparently not been published elsewhere.
The account of the Our Lady of the Angels School Fire is particularly engrossing. We learn about a troubled boy who probably set the fire. The fire burned for some time, unnoticed. Then the stairwell caught fire, sending smoke into the second-floor hallway, and trapping the children and teachers. Soon the hallway flashed over. So did the cockloft above the classrooms. Yet the firefighters heroically managed to pull at least 150 children, out of the windows, and out of the jaws of certain death. There are several photos of the recovery of the bodies after the fire.

Discussion of the McCormick Place Fire of 1967 includes a telling picture of the failed roof truss (p. 106). This served to remind us that steel in general, and long, unsupported steel trusses in particular, do poorly in large fires. (This later was a major factor in the collapse of the WTC towers on 911).
This book is not limited to spectacular, single fires. There is also discussion of several non-famous individual fires, as well as the many fires that were ignited during the 1960's race riots, especially following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.
