Hollywood on Lake Michigan: 100 Years of Chicago & the Movies (Illinois) ReviewWhat a delightful gripper this book is, chock full of impressive facts and tasty trivia rolled into a well researched sampler that's part cinematic history, part travel guide. You can thumb through for location addresses set off in bold type, followed by brief descriptions of the films associated with each, and then you can plan a proper movie maniac's pilgrimage. Just don't expect directions to private residences: You won't get to ring the doorbell where Macaulay Culkin was left "Home Alone" (1990) or hang out at the house where Tom Cruise ran his "Risky Business" (1983). You can, however, eat breakfast where Timothy Hutton and Dinah Manoff met for coffee in "Ordinary People" (1980) or have a "cheezbooga, cheezbooga" at the Billy Goat Tavern, made famous by John Belushi on "Saturday Night Live" and revisited in his 1981 romantic comedy "Continental Divide."
Bernstein delves into the early years of moviemaking, before Hollywood's crass monopolization of it, when the burgeoning film industry was nurtured in Chicago. Among the developmental milestones: the invention of the first cameras and projectors, the establishment of two of the world's first film studios, the practice of creating movie adaptations out of contemporary news events, the first African-American owned and operated film productions in the United States, the genesis of the independent film community, the weekly film serial, and the gore flick that typified the drive-in era.
The book covers an amazing list of films and TV shows shot in Chicago and traces the contributions to celluloid history by actors, writers, and directors who have roots in the city -- an illustrious roster too long to post here. Great Chicago Fires: Historic Blazes That Shaped a City (Illinois) ReviewThis book discusses such conflagrations as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Iroquois Theater Fire, Columbian Exposition Fire, Chicago Stockyards Fire, etc. The book is full of pictures, some of which have apparently not been published elsewhere.
The account of the Our Lady of the Angels School Fire is particularly engrossing. We learn about a troubled boy who probably set the fire. The fire burned for some time, unnoticed. Then the stairwell caught fire, sending smoke into the second-floor hallway, and trapping the children and teachers. Soon the hallway flashed over. So did the cockloft above the classrooms. Yet the firefighters heroically managed to pull at least 150 children, out of the windows, and out of the jaws of certain death. There are several photos of the recovery of the bodies after the fire.

Discussion of the McCormick Place Fire of 1967 includes a telling picture of the failed roof truss (p. 106). This served to remind us that steel in general, and long, unsupported steel trusses in particular, do poorly in large fires. (This later was a major factor in the collapse of the WTC towers on 911).
This book is not limited to spectacular, single fires. There is also discussion of several non-famous individual fires, as well as the many fires that were ignited during the 1960's race riots, especially following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Near West Side Stories: Struggles for Community in Chicago's Maxwell Street Neighborhood (Illinois) ReviewThis book is billed as an "oral history," which it is, but it is much more than that. First, the author provides extensive background about each of the four urban ethnic enclaves her interview subjects then go on to describe from their personal perspectives. Second, she has selected four truly remarkable people, activists in every sense of the word. Third, she has created a narrative based on multiple interviews and letters that manages to present a clear, readable and appealing story while retaining the authentic voices of her four subjects. Though intended to be representative of the four key ethnic groups that occupied Chicago's Maxwell Street neighborhood for its last 100 years (Eastern European Jews, Italians, southern African-Americans and Mexicans), the four interview subjects are each fascinating individuals in their own right. Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses ReviewThis interesting and insightful book looks into one of the most famous and long-lived curses in sports; the billy goat curse of the Chicago Cubs. In October of 1945, the Chicago Cubs were playing the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Games 1-3 were held in Detroit, where the Cubs won two of the three games. Returning to Chicago, the Cubs had hopes of closing out the series in front of the hometown fans. One of the fans who came to see the Cubs was William "Billy Goat" Sianis, a Greek immigrant who owned a nearby tavern.
Sianis came to the park with two box seat tickets; one for himself and the other for his pet billy goat "Murphy". Ushers immediately tried to prevent Sianis and his goat from entering, but they failed to keep them out. Once inside, Billy and his goat made their way onto the field before the ushers intervened again. Billy and Murphy were allowed to take the seats they had purchased, but, under orders from Cubs owner Phillip K. Wrigley, Billy and Murphy were ejected from the game due to, according to Wrigley, the goat's odor. Outraged, Sianis placed a curse on the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in the World Series. The birth of the "billy goat" curse had occurred.
The Cubs eventually lost the 1945 World Series to the Tigers and Sianis sent a telegram to Wrigley stating "Who stinks now?"
From that fateful series against the Tigers until today, the Cubs have never won a pennant or played in a World Series, just as Sianis said they wouldn't. There have been close calls (1969, 1984, 1989, 1998, and 2003), but ultimately something happened to spoil the Cubs dreams, such as the black cat incident in New York in 1969, Leon Durham's misplayed ground ball in 1984, and the infamous Steve Bartman foul ball interference in 2003. Although classifed as an "Urban Legend", many Cubs fans really believe in the curse. I must say that everything that Sianis said would happen to the Cubs has happened. How much can be attributed to the curse or to just poor luck or bad play?
I enjoyed this book a great deal. Although it is relatively short, it still gives very good information about the curse and some of the other lesser-known Cubs curses, such as the curse of Fred Merkle. I highly recommend this book. Baseball fans and, more specifically, Cubs fans like myself, will enjoy this fun look at one of the most famous curses of all time and how it has affected the Cubs for sixty years.Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses Overview

A Field Guide to Gay and Lesbian Chicago ReviewThe title of this book really should be changed to "The best gay friend you may or may not have had who taught you almost everything you need to know about nearly all things gay and lesbian in Chicago." But I guess "Field Guide" will do. Kathie (a fiction writing alum of Columbia College Chicago) and Robert have compiled a valuable and expansive resource for anyone from newcomer queers to tired old queens and even straights that either enjoy the gay vibe or have the occasional visit from their flamboyant cousin. A little bit of history combined with a whole lot of detail and sprinkled with a few personal anecdotes, this field guide is a virtual romp through the `hoods, dives, stages, stores, hotels (and more) that are quietly and boldly queer Chicago.
Audio walking tours might be overkill but I wouldn't be surprised if that weren't next for these two out and seasoned Chicagoans.A Field Guide to Gay and Lesbian Chicago Overview

A Chicago Tavern: A Goat, a Curse, and the American Dream. ReviewI had an existential "A-ha!" moment in Rick Kogan's tribute to "A Chicago Tavern: a Goat, A Curse, and the American Dream."
Kogan says:
Around 1950, there were almost 7,000 taverns in Chicago. In 2006, there were fewer than 1,250.
This reviewer basically learned how to read while accompanying my father to visit his friends at Peg's Tavern in Hinckley, IL (They would give me nickels and quarters to play the juke box - so I learned P a t s y C l i n e and all her friends and all their songs.) There was a real sense of community and camaraderie among the regulars, like an Irish village pub/hub, that one doesn't encounter in the "fern bar" Chains of today, contributing, one can extrapolate, to the loss of neighborliness and sense of community in current culture. (See also Bowling Alone : The Collapse and Revival of American Community)
Kogan tells about a family of Greek immigrants who created a place where all collars, blue, white, and clerical meet and mingle; a tale of a Billy Goat's tail and the "truth" about the "curse" on the Chicago Cubs. Making appearances in text and photos are the Sianis family; various animal goats; various old goat humans: Mike Royko and Harry Caray; Aykroyd & Belushi (this is the real deal - where the "Cheezborger, Cheezborger! No fries . . . chips!" were made;) some presidents and other politicians; and even that Stinkier- than-a-Goat Devil & Demolisher of the 2003 Pennant Hope, Steve Bartman.
Docked a star because Kogan's choice to write the whole thing, even the historical stuff from 1916, in the present tense, riled this reviewer worse than a whole gaggle of sorority girl foo-foo umbrella drinks.

For Members Only: A History And Guide to Chicago's Oldest Private Clubs ReviewOne could walk down a Chicago street and pass many of them, never knowing they passed an important part of Chicago's history. Knowledgeably compiled and expertly written by Lisa Holton, "For Members Only: A History and Guide to Chicago's Oldest Private Clubs" looks at over a century of secrecy and how it is not always a bad thing. Identifying these clubs and their contributions, examining how they were formed, and revealing how they exist in the modern world which frowns on exclusionary practices, "For Members Only" a solidly informative and educational study. Highly recommended for non-specialist general readers with an interest in American History in general, and the city of Chicago in particular, "For Members Only" is a great piece of history and a welcome addition to library reference collections.

The Jews of Chicago: FROM SHTETL TO SUBURB (Ethnic History of Chicago) ReviewAs a former Chicagoan, I found the book to be most informative as well as interesting. The book was thoroughly researched and well presented. Although I grew up in the Jewish community of Chicago, there were many historical facts that I had no prior knowledge of. One story that I found particularly interesting involved the Great Chicago Fire. The fire actually started on the eve of the Jewish Holiday of Simchat Torah. During this holiday, the Torah scrolls are danced with in the streets. The fact that the scrolls were outside when the fire broke out may have actually saved many lives, as well as the Torah scrolls. Cutler's book made me aware of the rich cultural tapestry that formed Chicago's Jewish community. The Chicago River: A Natural and Unnatural History ReviewThis book delivers on its title by providing a thorough account of the natural and unnatural (affected by humans) history of the Chicago River. Although the title is apt, it understates the breadth of fascinating material in the book. The "natural history" covers every facet of the river and its environs and provides a good primer about nature in general and the effect that people can have on it. Through the "unnatural history" we learn about the growth of Chicago and its suburbs as well as the Midwest and the United States, with the unifying theme of the river holding everything together.
It's clear that a huge amount of research went into this book, and even technical sections are presented clearly and enlivened by interestuing tidbits of information. I wish this book existed when I lived in Chicago. I would have had a much greater appreciation of what was around me.The Chicago River: A Natural and Unnatural History Overview
