The Outfit Review"The Outfit" is a well written, thoroughly comprehensive look at the post-Capone history of organized crime in the city of Chicago. Gus Russo does an excellent job of leaving no stone unturned as he chronicles the Outfit's activity from the jailing of Capone to its decline in the 90s. Along the way we meet the gangsters who made the Chicago mob rich and famous: Tony "Joe Batters" Accardo, Paul "the Waiter" Ricca, "Curly" Humphries, Johnny Roselli,Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik, and Sam "Mooney" Giancana. Russo discusses the role of each in making the Chicago Syndicate the power it was in the world of organized crime.
Russo's breezy style makes "The Outfit" an absolute joy to read, deftly mixing facts and ancedotes like a master chef. Read about the takeover of IATSE, the Hollywood union, and the infiltration of the mob into the world of the Hollywood studios; the Mob's entry and takeover of Las Vegas; the infiltration into the Teamsters and the scheming of the Outfit to fix the 1960 presidential election and what happened when they were doublecrossed. It was by no means a smooth ride - along the way Russo details the eforts of law enforcement to balance the books, so to speak, with the result that the Outfit always had to keep scheming, keep looking, for new rackets and businesses to infiltrate. Russo keeps the pages turning with a compelling style that makes the book's 550 pages seem like 100 when you hit the end.
Few books even attempt to cover the history of the Chicago Mob after Al Capone left the scene. Fewer still are this enjoyuable. A must for crime historians and those just interested in a good book.The Outfit Overview

The Chicago Mob. A History. 1900-2000 ReviewMr.Tuohy, has out done himself with this prized piece of literary work! Since I'm a Chicagoan, born and raised for 40 years, some of them on the very same streets where some of the Outfit's associates and higher-ups lived, and after the first few pages I'm hooked. His writing style to me is very easy to digest, and his photos are spectacular, either due to it's rarity or the person being photo, alot of these Outfit bosses/hitman didn't like to be photographed, and believe me, they made sure that you knew it. To take the Chicago Outfit and write about the ups and downs the Organization went through during this 100 year time frame is an amazing feat. You get some real good stories, written with out an agenda, just to get the information out to the public. A brilliant topic which was handled with care and dignity by Mr.Tuohy, as I'm finding out is the case in ALL OF HIS BOOKS, be they organized crime or based on something else. When Corruption Was King: How I Helped the Mob Rule Chicago, Then Brought the Outfit Down ReviewEvery Chicagoan knows they live in a cesspool of corruption. It's been that way for more than a century and will probably never change. Robert Cooley is obviously a brave man. He put his life at risk to expose corruption. Though he was once part of that corruption, he ultimately saw that the evil needed to be fought.
That said, the book is disappointing. The writing style is flat and there is far too much focus on Cooley's childhood and personal life. Opportunities are missed time and time again to bring the corrosive effects of political and judicial corruption into sharper relief. Excursions into the impact of mob murders, fixed court cases and the like would have been welcome. Particularly for people who don't live in Chicago, the impact of Cooley's bravery on the people of the city may be lost.
That said, Cooley's book is still worthwhile for demonstrating how a few dishonorable men can steal the life and wealth of a great city.

The Chicago Way ReviewTHIS BOOK SHOULD BE A MOVIE. A behind the scenes detailed view of the Chicago Crime Syndicate through the eyes of a Detective Police Sergeant personally making raids for 40 years while fighting the mob...not just a bunch of words from some researcher. The book details the who, the what, and the way the Chicago mob has murdered 150 informants, gamblers who owe $$, and their competition. Not just rumors about the mob and how they work...documents, photos, arrest information and "mob family" ties finally revealed. This is the real deal. Only a street cop could provide previously unknown facts about the murderous ways of the syndicate.
Herion was also an advisor on the recent Dillenger movie "Public Enemy" with Johnny Depp, and on several other movies.

It is Don Herion's book which peeks into intricate investigative, and enforcement techniques he used against the mob, as well as the inner workings of the Chicago Crime Syndicate (his 40+ years of actually making raids). This book really sheds the light on the power and control the Chicago mob had going for it. It even reveals how the FBI intercepted wiretaps of mob chieftains using their power to have Sgt. Don Herion transferred to police uniform subway duty. Herion was a thorn in their side, and they did get him transferred. But he did return to the Vice unit to continue the raids against record numbers of mob bosses and hitmen. Again, a total look at Organized Crime through the eyes of an enforcement officer.

A eye opening, down to earth report on the way it really is on the streets. Not.. the filtered down movie script version of the Crime Syndicate.The Chicago Way Overview
