We All Fall Down (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) ReviewWe can almost feel the rattle of the train as the conductor speeds up to hurry home. The Blue Line train in Chicago is going faster than it should and the vibrations of the train's passage causes a light bulb to become loose and fall, bursting quietly. Not long after, people in the area begin to become sick and die.
Private Investigator Michael Kelly is asked to help with security when it's determined that there could be a threat of a biological weapon on the Chicago railway system.
Dr. Ellen Brazile and her assistant, Dr. Molly Carrolton are experts in the field. They use a detection devise which registers a possible pathogen on the Blue Line subway.
As the sickness spreads, authorities scramble to find answers, while some, try to assure that they won't be held accountable. Dr. Brazile informs Kelly that soon after the first case, there were more and more infected people and the number of infected people was rising rapidly.
The Dept. of Homeland Security is at hand and, with the mounting deaths, they decide to quarantine a part of the city. This gives some criminals the opportunity to rid themselves of their rivals and looting and burning of buildings begin.
It's easy for the readder to immerse themselves into this fearful setting. The action is realistically portrayed and not having time to consider alternatives, the story flows dramatically.
Dr. Brazile leads the charge in attempting to identify the pathogen and develop a vaccine while Kelly continues to search for the person responsible for this biological calamity.
I found Kelly to be an interesting character. He and Dr. Brazile seemed concerned with the average person while many officials were looking out for themselves.
The story was entertaining and shows that the author, Michael Harvey, knows how to put together a tense, well designed plot.We All Fall Down (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) Overview

When Corruption Was King: How I Helped the Mob Rule Chicago, Then Brought the Outfit Down ReviewEvery Chicagoan knows they live in a cesspool of corruption. It's been that way for more than a century and will probably never change. Robert Cooley is obviously a brave man. He put his life at risk to expose corruption. Though he was once part of that corruption, he ultimately saw that the evil needed to be fought.
That said, the book is disappointing. The writing style is flat and there is far too much focus on Cooley's childhood and personal life. Opportunities are missed time and time again to bring the corrosive effects of political and judicial corruption into sharper relief. Excursions into the impact of mob murders, fixed court cases and the like would have been welcome. Particularly for people who don't live in Chicago, the impact of Cooley's bravery on the people of the city may be lost.
That said, Cooley's book is still worthwhile for demonstrating how a few dishonorable men can steal the life and wealth of a great city.

A History of Chicago's O'Hare Airport ReviewEver pick up a book expecting something totally different, only to be pleasantly surprised by what layeth between the covers? This is that kind of book.
If you are expecting some dry, boring manuscript full of facts and figures, this is not that book. Although this book does present that information, the author skillfully entwines those stats with interesting stories. Having grown up next to O'Hare in the late 50's, and lived there through the mid 80's, I can say that I thought I knew all that there was to know about ORD. I was happy to find a book that filled in a lot of the back ground information that I did not know.
This book is written by an aviation enthusiast who is spot on with his facts which is quite refreshing. Nothing drives me crazier than someone who can't get their facts straight! Anyway, what makes this book really interesting is how the author incorporates a good deal of history not just of ORD, but of the city of Chicago, and the surrounding communities. So, if you have an interest in the history of Chicago, with ORD being such a huge part of transforming Chicago in to the economic and social powerhouse it is today, then this book is essential reading. But don't worry, you won't be bored. Like me, you will find it hard to put this book down. I finished this book off in three easy nights of reading. That's the other thing, this book is an "easy" read. It's entertaining, and interesting.
I highly recommend this book. I look forward to any further revisions. I hope that at some point in the future the author can expand the book, and add some more photos. I would like to see a history of the airlines, and aircraft types that are have known to have operated in to ORD over the last six decades. I would also like to see this made in to a hard bound book and with some more technical additional chapters, become part of my reference library. Having said this, the author is certainly off to a good start. I congratulate him on a job well done for what appears to be his first published book.
