The Chicago Tribune Good Eating Cookbook ReviewAs a Chicagoan, I own this book (hardcover edition) along with the original Chicago Tribune Cookbook published in 1989. Some recipes appear in both books. Although the hardcover edition appears to be unavailable, I believe a softcover can be had - if not from Amazon or Borders, perhaps from the Chicago Tribune Gift Store. This is an excellent all-purpose cookbook and every recipe has been put through the paces in the Tribune's test kitchen. There are many tempting dishes including those indigenous to Chicago such as Chicken Vesuvio, Italian Beef Sandwiches (Chicago's quintessential comfort food), and Eli's Cheesecake (move over, New York City!). The Jalapeno Corn Pudding is to die for and the potato and soup recipes are wonderful. I've never tried one that didn't work! Although there are plenty of ethnic recipes (Soul Food, Vietnamese, Greek, Moroccan, Thai, Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Latin, Italian) I would like to have seen more. The section on Bread is very good, but there's nary a recipe for Naan or any other Indian bread. "Indian" recipes are "Indian-style", not the real McCoy. Although this book pays homage to "America's Heartland" and the Midwest, Chicago is a city of neighborhoods - perhaps a cookbook representing those ethnic communities might be welcome and forthcoming.
Chicago is fortunate to have some of America's best chefs: Gale Gand, Jean-George Vongerichten, Rick Tramonto, Jean Joho, and Paul Kahan. They, and their establishments, are nicely represented (although there is no mention of Rick Bayless).
The Chicago Tribune continues to instruct and delight with its better than average weekly food section. One can hope that a third edition of this volume will appear down the road to include favorites since this book was published: Chestnut Cheesecake, Grand Mariner Truffles, Pumpkin Lasagna, and Duck Breasts with Dried Cherry Sauce, among others. You've got to buy this book if you're from Chicago - but it's a welcome addition to any kitchen library. I'd give it 3.5 stars.
