Rand McNally Street Guide: Chicago 7-County (Cook * DuPage * Kane * Kendall * Lake * McHenry * Will) ReviewThis is an excellent supplement to GPS machines, and much cheaper. My suggestions for the next edition: Put the "Cities and Communities" section either at the very front or the very back. My older edition has this information on the inside covers, which is even better, but the current information does not fit on two pages. Still, the inside covers are being wasted now. The front has some unnecessary promotional text and the back cover is blank. The abbreviations could be put on one of these locations and the legend on the other. The index material's edges should be in various colors to make them easy to find. Tabs could help with this. There should be some maps that help give an overall sense of the areas covered. With everything fragmented into little sections, it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Each county should have a page that covers the whole county. And there should be a two-page map that covers the complete area. The continuous pagination is preferable to the other company's division into separate sections for each county, although some explanation for why the map numbers start at 2,349 would be nice (I may have just missed it in the text). The PageFinder Map is a bit hard to read. Using lighter colors and stretching it over two pages would help. The correlation with the Chicago grid centered on Madison and State street is a good idea. Information on one-way streets in downtown Chicago would be helpful too. You might want to incorporate material found in _Turner's Chicagoland Street Guide, Including Suburbs & Expressways, Taxi & Limo Edition_, such as the grid systems in the suburbs and where you can get on or off freeways. It might help to think about how the atlas could be useful to taxi-drivers. Then salesmen could promote the atlas to cab companies. 2011/12 Chicago Restaurants (ZAGAT Restaurant Guides) ReviewI've been buying a ZAGAT Chicago restaurant guide for years. I've even submitted reviews. I try to get an updated version every year. The reviews are helpful, but do not always reflect my point of view about a particular place. I find the hard data that the guide provides the most helpful. The Cuisines and Locations sections have really enhanced my neighborhood culinary experience. The ratings and symbols guides are useful, but I find the addresses and phone numbers the best asset. When friends visit from out of town, I keep a copy in the car, so we're never at a loss for a restaurant choice.2011/12 Chicago Restaurants (ZAGAT Restaurant Guides) Overview

Illinois Institute of Technology sent the book when my son was a freshman and we have used it every time we visit Chicago. This current version is updated nicely.

Lonely Planet Chicago (City Travel Guide) ReviewIf you enter Chicago from the east along I-94 or I-90 you would cross city limits at the Indiana-Illinois border or at the Calumet River. According to this book, however, you would seemingly not enter Chicago until you reached Roosevelt Road after another dozen-or-so miles. By focusing overwhelmingly on the North Side of the city, the book deprives its readers of some of the most inspiring and memorable features of what Norman Mailer called "the last of the great American cities."
True, Lonely Planet does a serviceable job covering the tourist meccas of the Magnificent Mile and Cubs-fanatic Wrigleyville; it might be sufficient for someone whose only goal is to kill boredom for a weekend in Chicago, and there's nothing wrong in that. But I look at visiting a new city as an opportunity to really get under the skin of a place; to absorb the sights and sounds of an exciting and unfamiliar world, and the Lonely Planet Guide to Chicago is deficient when it comes to sharing what makes Chicago Chicago.
For example, you can't come to terms with the meaning of baseball in this town unless you deal with the rivalry between the North Side Cubs and the 2005 World Series Champion White Sox on the South Side. But here, the latter is given a succinct and somewhat disparaging review and isn't even entitled to an entry in the Index. The History section makes a brief mention of black migration to "glitzy images of thriving neighborhoods like Bronzeville" with a reference to a half-page spent on that neighborhood (compared to six pages spent on the Gold Coast). The Pullman neighborhood, formerly a company-owned village and site of one of the defining strikes in American labor history doesn't even warrant a mention, despite city-run walking tours and a host of national accolades and historic designations. Surprisingly, even Downtown Chicago gets short shift here. The Chicago Loop is the second-largest business district in the U.S., after Midtown Manhattan, yet it is given a mere ten pages of this 280 page book, shouldered aside to make room for an extensive look at the Navy Pier tourist trap. These are just a few of many omissions, and they are not trivial.
The book isn't a total wash. What it does cover it tends to cover well, and the interesting and insightful sidebars provide a more nuanced look at this fascinating place than the table of contents would suggest. But if you want to meet Chicago for the first time -- if you want to see the postcard skyline *and* meet some of the characters that made Studs Terkel's "Division Street" such a powerful and revealing work, you'll have to go a little further than Lonely Planet will take you. Scour contents of guides to Chicago (quick and easy to do here at Amazon), and when you find one with headings for Bridgeport, Bronzeville, Pilsen, and Lincoln Park, you've probably found a winner.Lonely Planet Chicago (City Travel Guide) Overview

Top 10 Chicago (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE) ReviewThis was a wonderful introduction to Chicago and definitely
made my trip more enjoyable. I have used many of the top 10/eyewitness travel guides throughout the years, and really feel that Top 10 Chicago was one of the best. It captured the best the city has to offer, and was perfect for someone who had less than a week in the city. With the help of my Top 10 guide I made it to 8 of the 10 top sites. One of the best features of this book is its size - it's compact, chock-full of information, and easily fits into any bag/purse. The book also included a very helpful subway/street map and, because the book is so thin, I didn't feel like I was being conspicuous when I referred to the guide in public. DK continues its tradition of
including top-notch photography, and there was also a lot of
background information about each of the Top 10 sites. My
book was a copyright 2004 and all of the information (prices, free museum days, discounts) was still the same ; I would definitely recommend this book for your upcoming Chicago trip but, like with any guidebook, make sure it's the most recent version you can find so dates, times, etc. are still useful. Highly recommended!
