Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, Second Edition (Teaching for Social Justice) ReviewIn the very spirit of Greg Michie's approach to teaching, he titles his book. Throughout the book, Michie champions the idea of listening to the students in order to better understand them, and ultimately, better teach them. The title, "Holler If You Hear Me," is a colloquial expression used by kids in the inner-city. I, myself, am in college and seriously contemplating teaching in the inner-city and picked up Michie's book in a book store simply because I couldn't believe a teacher/author had used that phrase to title his book! Michie's approach to teaching was equally as amazing!
I read through this book in nearly one day because of Michie's complete candidness and acute observation in teaching in an inner-city school. He shares real-life stories of those he's taught and the lessons he's learned along the way.
If anyone out there is considering teaching (as I am), I would strongly recommend this book! And if anyone out there currently teaches in the inner-city and is feeling frustrated, Greg Michie's views may be just the kind of thing you need to get your teaching back on track. As my review title states, (and stealing another inner-city colloquial expression), this book is tight! (Which, for those who don't know, means "great"!) -AndyHoller If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, Second Edition (Teaching for Social Justice) Overview

Gamelan Gong Kebyar: The Art of Twentieth-Century Balinese Music (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) ReviewMichael Tenzer has written a dense and thrilling work on a stunning, vital musical tradition. The text is written for persons with solid background in musical compositon and ethnomusicology, but within those arcane fields this book is a real find. Carefully written and insightful, this book is a godsend for those looking for possible ways out of late 20th century compositional ennui. Highly recommended.Gamelan Gong Kebyar: The Art of Twentieth-Century Balinese Music (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) Overview

Give 'Em Soul, Richard: Race, Radio, and Rhythm and Blues in Chicago ReviewI am so thrilled to have in my possession another radio project and on one of America's most outstanding Radio Announcers; i.e. Richard Stamz. This book gives you the full soul of Richard and if you never knew him, after reading this book you will feel as if you had finally met him. Richard was very passionate about his broadcasting career and the book emphasizes it and how hard it was to be an African American in the society inwhich he was raised and worked in. He lived a full life and enjoyed sharing his stories with everyone and finally, it's packaged into what he was all about... "Soul"!
The book is a quick read and I wish he had more involved details on the industry ups and downs; however, it does mention things that others never would in their writings and all of it is the total truth.

Once Upon a Time in Chicago ReviewI bought this for my 8 year old niece. She is learning the clarinet and enjoying swing music both old and new. In fact, when she heard Goodman's trademark signoff song, "Goodbye" she nearly choked up with emotion.
"That's so sad," she said. "That's so beautiful."
And she loved the book. Mr. Winter's terse prose provides depth for young readers. And the illustrations are pure Jeannette Winter - whose work I have often seen and which has never disappointed.
Children need not be musicians to enjoy this. If you want them exposed to the best of 20th-century pop culture (and one of today's best juvenile writers,) get this book.Once Upon a Time in Chicago Overview

In the Course of Performance: Studies in the World of Musical Improvisation (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) ReviewAn excellent set of articles on improvisation, with one on the psychology of improv, and articles on Gamelan, Arabic music, jazz, Cantonese opera, Latin dance, Hindustani music, children's games.
Improvisation is not the same everywhere. And there are differences from culture to culture, and performer to performer, in just how much of a performance is improvised. These essays address these and other issues. In the Course of Performance: Studies in the World of Musical Improvisation (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) Overview

Cassette Culture: Popular Music and Technology in North India (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) ReviewIf you are not interested in exploring the details of the music biz in India, turn off this site right now; this book is not connected to the Western pop scene. CASSETTE CULTURE is a study of the impact of cassette technology on popular music in North India. It explores the nature of the changes the arrival of widely-available cassettes has made on the structure of the Indian music industry and on popular music itself. I found it a well-written book with an absolute minimum of scholarly jargon, though it is an academic book. The author does not presume knowledge on the part of the reader and gives careful explanations of Indian musical styles, regional cultures, and music industry details. I found the balance between theory and description excellent. There is an interesting discussion of the popular music recording scene in other parts of the world, as well as a thorough historical look at that topic in India itself. The problem of piracy is dealt with in depth. There are three basic issues that underlie Manuel's study. First, the nature of control of the mass media in India. Second, the content of the mass media and how it is presented. And third, the effect of the content on the audience and how they use that content. With these guidelines, he shows how the arrival of cassette technology and cheap cassette players in the 1970s created a revolution in Indian popular music. By the 1980s, a transformation was underway, with the rise of hundreds of small regional producers, as well as a few giants. Escape from corporate control might lead us to think that the cassette ?revolution? was a liberating force, but Manuel points out that this is not entirely so. The new technology has also been used to spread traditional, unprogressive, and even reactionary, bigoted messages through India. Cassettes have fuelled many a regionalist or separatist movement as well as the strivings of many an opportunistic politician.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the combination of music, popular media, technology and culture in India, one of the great civilizations of mankind, which seldom appears in Western media except for disasters, murders, or horror stories . Manuel has written a classic. Buy it.Cassette Culture: Popular Music and Technology in North India (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) Overview

A Day for the Hunter, a Day for the Prey: Popular Music and Power in Haiti (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) ReviewAn excellent overview of Haitian popular music in the last century. Strong emphasis on lyrics, rather sparse on music. Attempts to weave ethnographic moments into a sweeping history, but tends to give in to an encyclopedia impulse, leaving the reader slogging tree after tree too much without a view of the forest or knowledge of the shape of the leaves. But towers above everything else ever written attempting to give a broad view of Haitian music, an eye(ear)-opener for salsa fans and others who haven't had the chance to learn about the penetrating beauty of Haitian musical culture.A Day for the Hunter, a Day for the Prey: Popular Music and Power in Haiti (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) Overview

Thinking in Jazz : The Infinite Art of Improvisation (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology Series) ReviewThe blurb on the back cover of this book has a slight understatement... It begins, "A landmark in jazz studies,"
Not since the advent of the long playing record and the publication of Leonard Feather's "Encyclopedia of Jazz" has anyone made such an enormous, substantive, light shedding contribution to Jazz (outside a recording studio.) This book is a must for everyone... and in fact, its divided into two parts... one which *is* for everyone, and goes into how musicians come up, hone their skills, learn to interact, develop and whatnot, and then the second half, which is more for musicians and features close to 400 pages of musical examples - - a text book in musical studies itself.
As a musician myself, I have long suspected that Jazz isn't just a bunch of patterns and scales. It is a culture, an attitude, an approach, and way of thinking... this book not only confirms it, but it substantively will take you into the mind of its foremost vetarans and practitioners. With its balance between information that's anecdotal as well as analytical, and Berliner's excellent writing style (despite the size of the book, he just draws you in the pages flow by one by one) - - this is must reading...
Almost a half a century ago Leonard Feather told us about the masters, now Berliner draws us into their minds. It is my hope that Jazz students (and fans) alike will begin taking up this book as they begin their journeys, and as a result, it invigorates and revitalizes the music as its never been before !Thinking in Jazz : The Infinite Art of Improvisation (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology Series) Overview

Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories (Music in American Life) ReviewDavid Whiteis' new book, "Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories," is a collection of portraits of blues performers and venues that provides a sense of the diversity of the Chicago blues scene with an emphasis on its evolution as a living tradition among the city's African-American community. There are chapters devoted to departed masters to a number of contemporary performers representing a diversity of approaches to the blues, and in the process provides an enlightening overview of a still evolving blues scene and tradition. The portraits are derived from articles that Whiteis wrote for a variety of publications including the Chicago Reader, Juke Blues and Living Blues, and it would be welcome for no other reason than making these available, but the book is more than that.
The first part of Chicago Blues is devoted to Elder Spirits, and includes chapters on Junior Wells, Sunnyland Slim and Big Walter Horton. What is surprising is how little has been written on these three and Whiteis' chapters are welcome for recounting these the lives of these pioneers and masters of the post-war Chicago blues scene. As Whiteis notes, these three mentored him as he developed an knowledge and love of the blues, and his affection for them is obvious as can be gleaned from what he states about Sunnyland Slim, "We weren't what you would call blood brothers. I don't claim to have been his intimate confidant. Nevertheless, I honestly believe that no one else ever taught me so much about life than Sunnyland Slim did. To hear that voice growl through the octaves, build into a liontine roar, and then soar into a leonine roar, and then soar into high-tenor declarations of freedom-bound blues passion -- or just spend time in the presence of this tender-hearted giant of a man -- was to learn life lessons of the most profound and lasting kind."
The Second Part, "We Gon' Pitch a Boogie Woogie!" is an examination of blues venues past and present. There is a chapter on Florence's Lounge, the neighborhood lounge where Hound Dog Taylor and Magic Slim had held regular gigs before they began their years of touring which closed in the ear;y 1980s; the celebrated Maxwell Street Market whose rich history is recounted along with the gentrification of Chicago, expansion of the Chicago campus of Maxwell Street and its destruction of this historical area with a promise of a restored and improved, but ultimately sanitized, area. Whiteis' bittersweet account of the last day of Maxwell Street brings the community that the University destroyed alive for us. The final chapter of this part, Clubbing the Current Chicago Scene, provides sketches of different venues including the Delta Fish Market and its successor, Wallace's Catfish Corner; the Starlite Lounge and the late Harmonica Khan who was a star in this neighborhood juke; and then taking in Denise LaSalle's show at East of the Ryan which includes a nice overview of her career in addition to his perceptive analysis of her oft salty performances that like those of other modern soul and blues artists transcend the dichotomy between sacred and profane.
The Next Part, Torchbearers is in Whiteis' words, "the heart of the book." The portraits of currently active performers who carry on the traditions of the elders. Perhaps these are not all major stylists but each "is representative o the music that remains prevalent on the contemporary scene, and each one's story exemplifies important facets of the `blues life' as it is lived by contemporary artists... ." Chapters devoted to Jody Williams, Bonnie Lee, Billy Branch, Sharon Lewis and Lurrie Bell, give us an insight into their personal histories, the ups and downs they have faced and how they continue to preserve with their art. It is a reminder that blues is more than "just notes" or "just a feeling," devoid of any broader context. Of course, one has to be a bit careful in objecting that the music's cultural history is obscured and challenging the success of some teenage white prodigies while veteran blacks stay in obscurity and then be labeled as an `ignorant racist," as Billy Branch, one of the most eloquent teachers of the blues as well as a blues performer of the highest order. Chapters on Bonnie Lee, who first came up under Sunnyland Slim and later was associated with the late Willie Kent and Sharon Lewis were revelatory about two women who keep doing what they love to do the most, while the chapter on Lurrie Bell detailed the travails of his life as well as his triumphs (musical and personal).
Part IV, The Soul Side of Town, is devoted to Artie `Blues Boy' White (who notes even down south some of the venues he used to play have closed), Cicero Blake and Little Scotty (the later a social activist as well as singer). The book concludes with a Coda, as Whiteis ruminates on the current state of the music and its future, observing that their seem to be new obstacles today to the music surviving, but also reminding us that the blues seems to have this ability to reinvent itself, and its new manifestations and performers may confound us and our expectations what the blues should be, "yet again reveal itself to be a musical language that, once incubated and nurtured in its cultural milieu, can expand its scope and speak to a universal audience."
Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories, is invaluable for its lively, informative portraits of a variety of performers that help us appreciate aspects of the blues life. Furthermore, it raises significant questions of what the blues is, that goes beyond the current trend of focusing on playing notes and ignoring the culture and community the blues arose out of. As Whiteis reminds us, the music is still deeply rooted there and continues to live and evolve, aiding us to appreciate the music in a deeper and more knowledgeable manner.Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories (Music in American Life) Overview

Chicanas of 18th Street: Narratives of a Movement from Latino Chicago (Latinos in Chicago and Midwest) ReviewThis is a well written, honest and insightful book. It is a collection of stories and an analysis of what it meant to come of age during the sixties revolution for six Chicanas in Chicago. While telling the stories of these Chicanas, I think the book also connects their particular lives and struggles with the universal striving of all women and men to be free and lead meaningful lives in a just society. This is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the collective efforts and, of course, the difficulties of ordinary people to make a better world. As discussed and analyzed in the book, "Understanding the nature of the divisions that arose during the 1960s and 1970s is important for contemporary mobilizations."Chicanas of 18th Street: Narratives of a Movement from Latino Chicago (Latinos in Chicago and Midwest) Overview
