The Other Chicago Mob: The True Story of Gary Cohen Man in Blue ReviewI bought this book for my husband, who is interested in mobs and cops and Chicago history. He says the book is fun to read. The First Vice Lord: Big Jim Colosemo and the Ladies of the Levee ReviewThis is a brisk and entertaining account of the infamous career of Big Jim Colosimo, an influential political fixer, restauranteur and career criminal who was murdered shortly after the start of the Prohibition Era. Colosimo preceded Johnny Torrio and Al Capone as one of the top racketeers in Chicago. His celebrated restaurant and night club was unique in that served patrons from all classes of society, professional athletes, crooks, celebrities, politicians and elite members of the city's social register alike.
Jim Colosimo rose to power as a leader of Chicago's sanitation workers and as a top precinct captain for the notorious political bosses of the 1st Ward, Democratic aldermen "Bathhouse John" Coughlin and Michael "Hinky Dink" Kenna. Colosimo and his first wife, Victoria, owned and operated numerous lucrative brothels in the infamous Levee district. During elections, Colosimo turned out the pimps, cadets and whores to deliver their votes to the political machine. He was on good terms with the Everleigh sisters and collected payoffs from various Levee resort operators to be divided with the politicians and the police.
The key problem that I found in reading this book was that so much of the political and election data supplied in the text was clearly erroneous. I would have given this book a better rating if not for these errors: State's Attorney John Wayman did not conduct vice raids in the Levee as a prelude for a run for governor in 1913 (he had been an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1912 which was held months before the raids began in earnest); "Big Bill" Thompson was not the incumbent alderman of the 2nd Ward when he ran for mayor in 1915 (he had served in the city council more than a decade earlier) and he was not encouraged to make the mayoral race by Carter Harrison's decision to retire (Harrison was a mayoral candidate in 1915, but lost to County Clerk Robert Sweitzer in the nominating primary); Thompson testified on behalf of his former campaign manager, Fred "Poor Swede" Lundin, during the latter's trial for orchestrating corruption and wasteful spending at the Chicago Board of Education, but Thompson was not under indictment as a criminal defendant charged with participating in this particular scandal; William E. Dever defeated Arthur C. Lueder in the 1923 mayoral race (Thompson was not a candidate that year). Political events are an intregal part of the Colosimo story, but the book is quite careless in supplying the necessary details correctly.
The errors that I have referred to are merely a sampling of the mistakes to be found in the otherwise enjoyable text. There are several more, but space does not permit me to list all of the non sequiturs. One final example will suffice. According to the glossary, the Volstead Act was the popular name for the 13th Amendment which ushered in the legal prohibition of alcohol in the USA. In fact, the Volstead Act (the bill was named for its Congressional sponsor, US Representative Andrew J. Volstead of Minnesota) was the legislation that implemented the 18th Amendment; the 13th Amendment was passed during the Reconstruction era and formally abolished slavery in the United States immediately after the conclusion of the Civil War.
There is some good information in this book (the material related to Colosimo's second marriage to Dale Winters, his officially unsolved murder and his lavish funeral is well handled), but the presence of so many historical errors prevents me from rating the book as definitive. The First Vice Lord: Big Jim Colosemo and the Ladies of the Levee Overview

Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History ReviewLike so many longtime fans of the Chicago Bears, I have something of an obsession with the 1985 team. Among the many remembrances of that season published over the years, this is the best of that entertaining lot, a colorful, no-holds-barred, insider's account that makes for addictive reading.
Steve Delsohn gained access to many players and coaches from the 1985 squad, and they shared their candid stories. It is difficult to say which ones are the most prominent, but the ongoing feud between Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan, the remarkably steady achievements of Walter Payton, the phenomenon of Refrigerator Perry, and the nutty and clutch qualities of Jim McMahon stand out to me.
More importantly, the book captures the rock star quality of this team, replete with its swaggering confidence and its many outrageous, hilarious, and poignant moments.
For Bears and other football fans who may be feeling a sense of sad nostalgia about an era gone by, this book makes the 1985 season as fresh as if it was unfolding before us today. I bought it this afternoon -- started reading it right in the bookstore (feeling a bit foolish as I laughed out loud at some of the stories) -- and finished it tonight. What fun!Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History Overview

University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization, Volume 7: The Old Regime and the French Revolution ReviewThe book presents a very nice documentary narrative of the major events and circumstances of the French Revolution. Some entries are a bit puzzling, like the Diderot passage, and there are some gaps, such as Robespierre's "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen" (1793), but the overall value of the book is not diminished and can be supplemented by online sources (as was done in the class I took). Baker is, of course, a very fine intellectual historian, and his notes always provide sufficient transitions between the documents.University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization, Volume 7: The Old Regime and the French Revolution Overview

Guns and Roses: The Untold Story of Dean O'Banion, Chicago's Big Shot before Al Capone ReviewEven though I have read numerous other books on Chicago's infamous past during the prohibition years I found Rose Keefe's effort entitled Guns and Roses to be another fascinating read which is primarily devoted to Al Capone's North Side rivals. O'Banion's loss of his mother at an early age and subsequent move to a seedy section of Chicago contributed to Dean's alliance with the city's criminal element. The warring parties were driven by greed in invading each other's assigned territory during the beer wars. After the assassination of O'Banion in his florist shop in 1924 a number of his friends (Weiss, Drucci, and Moran) all had short terms heading the North Side mob. Weiss and Drucci being shot and Moran having his gang virtually wiped out at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. If you have read other books on this subject you can prepare yourself to enjoy yet another offering on the subject with this book. In addition, this book has photographs I have not seen in other books. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.Guns and Roses: The Untold Story of Dean O'Banion, Chicago's Big Shot before Al Capone Overview

Corporation Sole: Cardinal Mundelein and Chicago Catholicism Reviewthere are many reasons why this books is recommendably true and good to many readers. first it is descriptive so that every reader has an idea of what this corporation sole is all about. It is historical. It presents a historical feature of the corporation sole from one place to another and primarily in the Chicago diocese. It is interestingly inviting to those who have never been told to or have never been familiar regarding the church's inherent right to alienate, acquire and possess goods for the church herself. As a separate entity or a visible organization hierarchically structured with laws and norms, it is able to handle its temporal goods which is necessary in the propagation of the faith and the maintenance of the church property and mission. Nevertheless, it is significant to students of both civil law and canon law since it would allow them to take a glimpse of this particular provision - that is - corporation sole - to which the church is in a way benefitting in its relation with the state. Although there is such a principle of the separation of the Church and State, this book identifies the situations in which both can actively participate and join together in these concerns.Corporation Sole: Cardinal Mundelein and Chicago Catholicism Overview

The Golden Age of Chicago Children's Television ReviewTed Okuda and Jack Mulqueen's book, "The Golden Age Of Chicago Children's Television" is an incredible treasure chest of nostalgia for the beloved childhood memories of anyone who grew up in the Chicago Mid-West during the 1950's and 1960's.
Authors Okuda and Mulqueen cover the extensive and often elaborately produced Chicago area children's televison shows, along with their hosts, who became local stars of the first magnitude in the days before cable, sattelite dishes, and even UHF channels! These behind-the-scenes stories are both fascinating and riveting, and the reader can follow the rise and fall of such local, but famed legendary shows like "Garfield Goose And Friends", "Kukla, Fran & Ollie", "Ray Raynor And Friends", "B.J. And Dirty Dragon", "Bozo's Circus", "Elmer The Elephant", and "The Mulqueen's Kiddy-A-Go-Go', among many others! Readers will recall the wonderful stars of this long-gone era like Burr Tillstrom, Fran Allison, Frazier Thomas, Bob Bell, Ray Raynor, Roy Brown, Don Sandburg, John Conrad, Elaine (beautiful Pandora) Mulqueen, Bill Jackson, Mary Hartline, all the greats and many more!
Having grown up in Chicago during this era, I was unable to put down this book, and was astonished as to how many wonderful memories it brought back. The authors Ted Okuda and Jack Mulqueen have thankfully preserved for us some of Chicagoland TV's magic and history, before all traces of it vanish forever like the Buffalo!

The Electric City: Energy and the Growth of the Chicago Area, 1880-1930 ReviewThis book was a great reading experience for me. Part of my job is to teach electric utility system operators. I always try to give them some background in the history of the business and how their job evolved through the years. Professor Platt used Commonwealth Edison and Chicago for his model of how electricity changed life in America. Chicago was on the cutting edge more so than other cities because of the Great Fire of 1871. The downtown area had to be totally rebuilt so this offered an open-field opportunity to try the new electric technology.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in American urban development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though the book focuses on Chicago, the same pattern would hold true for other large American cities. Professor Platt has done an outstanding job of research. This is a treasure trove of charts, graphs and other data that show how the industry grew from several independent lighting companies competing against each other in the 1880s, into the beginning of an interconnected super-power system by the 1920s.
The author provides a lot of material on Samuel Insull, the unsung hero of the business. Insull was the Henry Ford of electric power mass-production. He had the vision and financial genius to set up the model for the industry that existed until the 1990s when deregulation came around. It is largely thanks to Insull that we have the system we take for granted today. Insull was involved in scandal late in life. He made powerful political enemies by donating huge sums of money to favorable candidates, in one case over $125,000 to a U.S. Senator-elect from Illinois. This would-be senator was denied his seat in the Senate when it was revealed how Insull had helped him get elected. Insull was eventually indicted for mail fraud for which he was acquitted, but not before it ruined him financially. One cannot study the history of the electric utility business without studying Insull.

The book is not a dry read by any means. The writing is brisk and moves at a good pace. Because of my unique interest in ComEd history, I was constantly pausing to make notes in the margins or to just reflect on how certain installations still existing today got their start. I'm sure I'll be referring to this book many times to research questions about the history of the business. The Electric City: Energy and the Growth of the Chicago Area, 1880-1930 Overview

Where to Bike Chicago: Best Biking in City and Suburbs (Where to Bike (Ba Press)) ReviewWow! I am impressed. What a great biking guide for those of us who live in or near Chicago and its suburbs. I saw this book offered recently as a premium by one of the local public tv stations...but the available copies were quickly snatched up. However, I had a chance to spend some time with it at a friend's house...and couldn't put it down. Glad to see it now available on Amazon. It comes off as a labor of love by a great writer and a dedicated bicyclist.
This book is really well organized, detailed, reasonably compact (not much more than a pound...easy to throw in a backpack or bike bag)...and absolutely full of maps, photos, trail ratings, trail descriptions, history, log rides, etc. I'm learning about 72 bike trails (including 27 good ones for kids)...most of which I never knew existed...and thinking hard about giving this book as a gift to friends and family. Five stars!Where to Bike Chicago: Best Biking in City and Suburbs (Where to Bike (Ba Press)) Overview

Chicago Journalism: A History ReviewThe world knows Chicago journalism from the Ben Hecht post-World War I era of The Front Page and later. After the glory years of greats such as Mike Royko, Chicago remains today a two-newspaper town, which is rare. What is strongest about this account, however, is its full treatment of the very earliest era, beginning with the creation of Chicago's first newspaper in 1833. The number of newspapers, including foreign language dailies and weeklies, was extraordinary. That meant that not only were the familiar editors and publishers involved, such as Joseph Medill and Victor Lawson, but there also were all kinds of unexpected players. Even the Willard family played a part, including Frances Willard herself. Written by a veteran reporter and editor from Chicago's City News Bureau, this book is a very carefully-researched and engaging contribution to the history of journalism.Chicago Journalism: A History Overview

Chicago Skyscrapers (IL) (Postcard History Series) ReviewLovers of Chicago's magnificent architecture will very much enjoy this unique little book. It is essentially comprised of a series of photographs (most of them from vintage postcards) of various architectural gems and highlights from Chicago's downtown, especially the Loop, which were erected between about 1866 to the mid 1930s, and many of which either no longer exist or have been significantly altered over the years. It is a look back into history.
The book is organized by area of town, i.e. Michigan Ave., Wabash Ave., State St., Dearborn St., Clark St., La Salle St., and along the river and North Michigan St. Each chapter opens with a street layout, with a key to each important building in the area, whether or not it is in the photographs. The photos/postcards follow, each identifying buildings, significant details, alterations, occasionally interior photos, and once in a while even text of the postcard on the back. The presentation is well thought out and thoroughly engrossing.
I am very glad I bought this book. I thumb through it often. If you are a fan of Chicago's architectural heritage, you ought to have a copy.Chicago Skyscrapers (IL) (Postcard History Series) Overview

Paris: Photographs from a Time That Was (Art Institute of Chicago) ReviewA very well-selected sampling of a century's worth (1850s-1950s) of black and white photos of Paris. Everyone is represented here, from Atget to Stieglitz to Man Ray to Cartier-Bresson to Irving Penn to Robert Frank, and many others.
The photos include dramatic shots of familiar scenes and many photos of ordinary and un-ordinary Parisians going about their lives. Obviously, they run the gamut from the glass plate negative era to the Leica 35 mm and the styles vary widely. Some are very formal, posed affairs, some are "decisive moment" snapshots, and many are that ambiguous middle, seemingly candid shots but in reality staged and scripted by the photographer. The introductory essay is a little bit "artsy," but it's well worth reading. It discusses all the photographers, describes how they worked, and is very useful in understanding what you're seeing. If you have any interest in the Paris that was, you won't be disappointed.Paris: Photographs from a Time That Was (Art Institute of Chicago) Overview

South Of Chicago: Suburbs, Steel Mills, Shoreline ReviewThis was absolutely excellent. Before 1998, I was unfamiliar with the south suburbs but they've been a part of my life ever since. As a non-native Chicagoan, this documentary filled in innumerable gaps in my knowledge. Furthermore, Mr. Baer is an enthusiastic and skilled narrator. All of it this was very informative for me. For example, the initial segment on Gary was eye-opening. I hate to say it but I did not know that US Steel was still going strong here nor did I know the history of Elbert Gary. The plan for the Gary school in particular was riveting and no doubt we'd be better off if we had them today (without the junior college element of course). The Indiana aspect of this film will no doubt educate many Chicagoans who give short shrift to the beautiful state to our east.
As the movie segues into South Chicago it enlightens further. The 573 acre post-steel mill neighborhood that is being planned makes one long for some serious economic recovery! Such a development would benefit the city massively. The richness of the south's history is sometimes forgotten due to its current economic woes. Honestly, I've driven on the Bishop Ford a million times but never knew the guy was. Fascinating. I worked in Blue Island for 6 years and it was good to actually hear its history. Overall, this documentary was superb and I ardently recommend it.South Of Chicago: Suburbs, Steel Mills, Shoreline Overview

Contemplating both jazz itself and issues of identity, culture, art, race, and politics, The Velvet Lounge captures both a wistful look at the big picture and vibrant memories of star music players such as Jimmy Smith, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Sun Ra, and more. 150 Years of Opera in Chicago ReviewI have not thoroughly perused the book as yet. Rather than containing the specific information I am looking for, it is a beautifully crafted Overview of the general subject. It should be a superb introduction to the subject for anyone looking for that kind of material. In other words, it rates as many stars as there are in your system! The chosen photographs are excellent, the chapter breakdown logical and pleasing.150 Years of Opera in Chicago Overview
