Where to Bike Chicago: Best Biking in City and Suburbs (Where to Bike (Ba Press)) ReviewWow! I am impressed. What a great biking guide for those of us who live in or near Chicago and its suburbs. I saw this book offered recently as a premium by one of the local public tv stations...but the available copies were quickly snatched up. However, I had a chance to spend some time with it at a friend's house...and couldn't put it down. Glad to see it now available on Amazon. It comes off as a labor of love by a great writer and a dedicated bicyclist.
This book is really well organized, detailed, reasonably compact (not much more than a pound...easy to throw in a backpack or bike bag)...and absolutely full of maps, photos, trail ratings, trail descriptions, history, log rides, etc. I'm learning about 72 bike trails (including 27 good ones for kids)...most of which I never knew existed...and thinking hard about giving this book as a gift to friends and family. Chicago ragtime: Another look at Chicago, 1880-1920 ReviewMany people have asked me what started myalcaponemuseum and my interest in gangland Chicago. My answer mostly consists of the performance by Robert DeNiro in The Untouchables. If there's one book that started my interest before DeNiro, then this one is most definitely it! I got it two years before DeNiro's performance and was quickly wrapped up in Mr. Lindberg's storytelling of old Chicago. The book is set right before Al Capone set foot in Chi-town. So many interesting non Capone stories in here. I highly recommend it to all the Chicago buffs out there. It helps understand how Capone would come to be and what was going on before in old Chicago. We get a great glimpse of how Chicago was named, events after the great fire, it's players, movers, shakers and the Great Mike McDonald etc... Just a great book with terrific illustrations! Lindberg makes the readers use their imagination, and it works!

I feel they give excellent advice that seems unbiased unlike your hotel conceirge will be. Forbes City Guide Chicago 2010 (Forbes Travel Guide City Guide Series) ReviewForbes' 2010 Chicago City Guide is a pocket sized guide about 4"x7" and 3/8" thick or small enough to fit in a back pocket or purse. The guide provides ratings for hotels, restaurants, and some spas as well as lists of attractions broken down by "What to See," "Shopping," "Nightlife," and "Arts & Culture." The "What to See" section lists just the very major attractions such as large museums or very famous sights and is grouped by area/neighborhood (Loop, Printers Row, Old Town, Lincoln Park, etc.) The restaurant and hotel sections seemed to be geared toward the high-end establishments (although I did see The Billy Goat Tavern mentioned). I found the maps to be small and not well detailed for walking. The color pictures were well rendered but it was hit-or-miss on if they could be helpful in finding an attraction. Many seemed to be photos of the inside of stores or restaurants.
I grew up in the Chicago area and worked in both Printers Row and the Loop for seven year. I found the guide contained information that "hit the high points" for a first-time Chicago experience. I would recommend this guide to business travelers who only have a short amount of time in town and anyone on their first trip to "The Windy City."

I love to try different foods, especially when visiting Chicago, and this book proved a valuable tool. While it is not all-inclusive, there were many good recomendations.
