Max Ernst: Dada and the Dawn of Surrealism (Art) ReviewFor all those who want to learn about the position of Max Ernst within Surrealism this is an essential book. Scholarly essays by Werner Spies (arguably the foremost authority on Max Ernst) and William Camfield, who writes in fascinating detail about the transition period when the artist moved from Dada into Surrealism. The period comes alive with rare photographs and anecdotes about the struggles of Max Ernst to survive in Germany after the first world war and his efforts to reach Paris, the promised land. Max Ernst, a true pioneer of many of the art techniques taught nowadays in artschools, such as frottage and collage, is celebrated in this book with not only almost 200 colour plates of many of his masterpieces, but also many lesser known works which show how he constructed his collages. Added to this are inumerable black and white illustrations of the sources for many of his most famous paintings. As Max Ernst never wrote an autobiography,a book such as this is a must for all those who desire to know something more about the artist who is quoted on page 28 as saying "A painter is lost when he finds himself." An artist difficult to know, but this book goes a long way in bridging that gap.Max Ernst: Dada and the Dawn of Surrealism (Art) Overview

Thomas Pynchon: The Art of Allusion (A Chicago Classic) ReviewThis fresh examination of the wide range of Pynchon's works --painting, film, music, and literature-- shows that his true art lies in humanistic allusions that stress the possibility of spiritually separating oneself from the modern wasteland. Written by a literature professor, the point of the book, I believe, is to show that although Pynchon's work depicts contemporary Western culture as destructive & entropic, he also holds an optimism for our ability to escape the traps of the modernist worldview/paradigm.Thomas Pynchon: The Art of Allusion (A Chicago Classic) Overview

Urban Art Chicago: A Guide to Community Murals, Mosaics, and Sculptures ReviewUrban Art Chicago is a beautifully produced guide to many of Chicago's murals and would be an excellent gift for any school teacher. It begins with a history of the mural movement in Chicago and includes well detailed maps, guides to the artists and communities who have created murals in Chicago, and excellently reproduced photographs of the murals themselves. It also provides a great way to introduce Chicago cultural studies, geography, history, language, folk culture, multi-cultural studies, and art to students.Urban Art Chicago: A Guide to Community Murals, Mosaics, and Sculptures Overview

The Golden Age of Chicago Children's Television ReviewTed Okuda and Jack Mulqueen's book, "The Golden Age Of Chicago Children's Television" is an incredible treasure chest of nostalgia for the beloved childhood memories of anyone who grew up in the Chicago Mid-West during the 1950's and 1960's.
Authors Okuda and Mulqueen cover the extensive and often elaborately produced Chicago area children's televison shows, along with their hosts, who became local stars of the first magnitude in the days before cable, sattelite dishes, and even UHF channels! These behind-the-scenes stories are both fascinating and riveting, and the reader can follow the rise and fall of such local, but famed legendary shows like "Garfield Goose And Friends", "Kukla, Fran & Ollie", "Ray Raynor And Friends", "B.J. And Dirty Dragon", "Bozo's Circus", "Elmer The Elephant", and "The Mulqueen's Kiddy-A-Go-Go', among many others! Readers will recall the wonderful stars of this long-gone era like Burr Tillstrom, Fran Allison, Frazier Thomas, Bob Bell, Ray Raynor, Roy Brown, Don Sandburg, John Conrad, Elaine (beautiful Pandora) Mulqueen, Bill Jackson, Mary Hartline, all the greats and many more!
Having grown up in Chicago during this era, I was unable to put down this book, and was astonished as to how many wonderful memories it brought back. The authors Ted Okuda and Jack Mulqueen have thankfully preserved for us some of Chicagoland TV's magic and history, before all traces of it vanish forever like the Buffalo!

Cy Twombly: The Natural World: Selected Works, 2000-2007 (Art Institute of Chicago) ReviewThe catalogue for the current exhibition held at the Art Institute in Chicago, this book is a small survey of Cy Twombly's recent output, from the year 2000 onwards (paintings, sculptures). Being a fan of Twombly's paintings of the late 50's and early 60's, I will refrain from giving my opinion on this late phase of his prolific career and concentrate on reviewing the book: it starts with an essay by curator James Rondeau (the author of the acclaimed "Jasper Johns: Gray" exhibition in 2008) who analyses the artist's late works in depth, showing how he has developed various series instead of producing independent unrelated paintings (such series as the Peony Blossoms paintings or III Notes from Salalah, a variation on his so-called "Blackboard paintings" of the late 60's)and endeavours to debunk the moot and oft-expressed point that brands them as being too "decorative" and "elegant". I was not entirely convinced by this somewhat pedantic essay, but it does shed new light on the works and helps the reader to form his own judgment in an unbiased way.
Then come the illustrations of the works and this is where the main drawback of the book lies: they are simply too small and do not do justice to the large-scale paintings that the exhibition covers. Nor do they give a good idea of the subtlety of the sculptures which could have been photographed from different angles. Moreover, there are no close-ups, therefore the reader does not get a chance to distinguish Twombly's brushstrokes (a real disappoinment to any Twombly aficionado...). All this is due to the inexplicably small format of the book which would suit a Klee exhibition more...Only 3 stars then.Cy Twombly: The Natural World: Selected Works, 2000-2007 (Art Institute of Chicago) Overview

Watercolors by Winslow Homer: The Color of Light (Art Institute of Chicago) ReviewI was browsing through the book store at the Art Institute of Chicago and was attracted to a new book that accompanies an upcoming exhibition at the museum. The beautiful cover of the book invited me to pick it up and open it. I know a little about Winslow Homer, but did not appreciate his accomplishments with watercolors until I flipped through this book. The staff at the book store must have thought I was a little nutty as I spent nearly an hour studying the gorgeous artwork and rich information about the artist, his times, and watercolor technique. The most interesting part is how the authors uncovered, just like CSI, how the artist created the pieces and what the watercolors originally looked like. I feel a little guilty buying the book from Amazon and not the Institute's store, but the museum will probably still benefit. This book is perfect for anyone whether you are an artist, a scientist, a lover or art, or just want to treat your eyes and mind to something beautiful on a dreary winter day. I am looking forward to returning to the museum and walking through the exhibition, which opens on February 16th.Watercolors by Winslow Homer: The Color of Light (Art Institute of Chicago) Overview

Kings, Queens, and Courtiers: Art in Early Renaissance France (Art Institute of Chicago) ReviewI loved this exhibition--I went back to see it almost every Thursday night when the museum was open late. The catalog includes pictures of nearly everything that I saw--a few are frustratingly small, like when they try to fit a picture on just one page that really should be on two. But overall, the images are wonderful. The book also feels luxurious--the weight of the paper and the color quality is very good--with nice details like the royal blue endpapers stamped with gold fleurs-de-lis. I'd definitely recommend it as a souvenir of the exhibition, but it can stand on its own as well.Kings, Queens, and Courtiers: Art in Early Renaissance France (Art Institute of Chicago) Overview

The Chicago Auditorium Building: Adler and Sullivan's Architecture and the City (Chicago Architecture and Urbanism) ReviewI just finished reading this extraordinary book (Dec 2010) , and can't believe I have not seen anybody write anything about in the Amazon reviews ; I run to it all by accident as I was trying to find out about possible connections between Frank Llowd Wright and the events in Chicago during the late 1880's , and how come main architectural historians I had been aware off had avoided refering to these aspects that shaped the city's architecture during these years. And I was extremely enlightened by a particular footnote and reference to John Edelmann,which sent me back to read again my readings of forty years ago on Louis Sullivan, actually re-reading his "The Autobiography of an Idea", and search further characters and people that might have had some influence on his "social order" enlightment,besides other issues; This book proved to be a treasor, not only of extraordinary research pertaining to one particularly great building, about which so much has been "silenced" over the years by main stream architectural historians, but also a treasor regarding the subject nobody seems to talk about,what I believe to have been a latent "anarchic" ingredient in great architects such as Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wrigh,both of which I consider to possess a "creative anarchist's"ingredient, in the same manner as that of Alvar Aalto about which Goran Schildt wrote in his Aalto biography. The book in concern here, has no direct discussion on these issues with reference to Sullivan or Wright (parenthtically), but there is substantial discussion pertaining to how the social-anarchic movements in Chicago, played a role in the making of the Auditorium building, particular architecture, particuluarly through Siry's very clear discussion and facts of the Germanic immigrant community, their struggles and ideas as well as the spaces they gothered, which eventually lead to the Auditorium as an antidote and advancement over them , a mediator and agent of brinking culture to a wider audience, an agent of peace with an eye to prosperity, all this a vision of the intuitive client Ferdinand Peck, and those two intuitive and great architects . A great book, deeply researched and meticulously documented, with in depth information at many levels, extraordinary photography and rare visual evidence from "period" sources, unique layout and Joyful to read as it has simple and clear writing, devoid of the esoteric and occasionally incomprehensible language of many academic writers, particularly of many Europeans. This is not a "coffee table book", but a deeply serious and yet very joyful book ;
A really great Book !

A Handbook of Biological Illustration (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) ReviewWith the internet, lots of people are beginning to design web pages... with no sense of art or style at all. Likewise for some people who use computers for illustrations. This handbook is indeed where everyone should begin if they're going to illustrate. It doesn't say much about computers, but it does show how to make professional illustrations using pre-computer tools -- which still set the standards. It's a most enjoyable book.A Handbook of Biological Illustration (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) Overview

Chicago Stories and Other Thoughts from a Working Class Guy ReviewRich Cronborg, an accomplished Chicago Neo-Expressionist painter, brings his flair for vibrant color and visual surprise to this collection of poems and short poetic prose.
These pieces are like snapshots of battles won and lost, but always fully engaged. This is Chicago seen from its belly up to its Big Shoulders. Cronborg regales the reader with stories of hunting lodges and carousing dates, friendships and old photos, family and obligations, of Chicago snows and depression, cheap hotel rooms and a visit to the shrink, politics and alcoholism and sobriety and grandfathers, Chicago's glitzy Art district and its slums, body builders and junkies, politicians, shooting pool and vampire girls, and obituaries.....and, always, Work.
This is an intimate portrait of self and city, or perhaps more an inside glance at the artist's own sketch pad of studies for these portraits. It reads in places like a personal diary or even a confessional, and in others one senses the slight possibility of a Tall Chicago Tale.
Highly recommended if you are averse to pretense and if you enjoy a little Grit with your Art.Chicago Stories and Other Thoughts from a Working Class Guy Overview

The Dinner Party: A Symbol of our Heritage ReviewThis is the exhibit book for "The Dinner Party", the historicfeminist art project led by Judy Chicago. It consists of atable with 39 place settings, each honoring a legendary or real woman. Each setting consists of painted and sculpted china plates and embroidered tapestries, both replete with imagery and symbolism. I am giving it to a young female friend for her 13th birthday, and I've already given it to a 17-year-old cousin. A Day in the Country: Impression and the French Landscape ReviewA Day in the Country was an exhibit mounted in the early '80's, using the theme that the Impressionist style of painting revolved around the dynamic of Parisian artists portraying the landscapes nearby their city. Viewing the exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute with an expert guide, we felt that we received full benefit from the collection. A memorable event.
The book built around the exhibit takes an understanding of Impressionism much deeper, involving not only personalities and landscapes, but also the international political dynamics as well. Who would have thought of Impressionism as a French nationalistic statement?
There is far too much in the book to go into, even if I was an art expert (which I am not). But, I am VERY pleased to own this, and will treasure the information that increases my appreciation of a favorite art form.A Day in the Country: Impression and the French Landscape Overview

Frida Kahlo: Face to Face ReviewJudy Chicago is not only one of our more important artists today, she is also in the forefront of assuring that women artists from the past (think back to Artemisia Gentileschi -1593 to 1653 forward) as well as those of the present, both well known and emerging, are equally recognized with male artists. This very colorful and beautifully designed book is a testament to that mindset. Chicago with the able assistance of art historian Frances Borzello has selected a large number of works by the ever fascinating artist Frida Kahlo and has put together a survey of her early influences and her phenomenal output in tandem with the works that Chicago feels presents a case for exploring Kahlo's inspiration.
While most of us are very familiar with the vast number of self portraits Kahlo painted, portraits that tell us as much about the art milieu of her time as any essay, there are many works presented here that are less well known and that deserve the attention the dialogue between Chicago and Borzello offer. The reproductions of both Kahlo's works as well as reproductions of frescoes, retablos, and other images from the past that can be noted as seeds in many of Kahlo's paintings are first class. From the rich cover of the book, emphasizing red (a favorite hue for Kahlo's dress and art), through to the details selected from Kahlo's works magnified for closer examination, this is a book of quality. And as if all of this shared imagery and information weren't enough this book is also a fine format for the gender issues both authors address. Highly recommended. Treasures of 19th- and 20th-Century Painting: The Art Institute of Chicago (Tiny Folios Series) ReviewThe Tiny Folio series is simply wonderful! As a frequent traveler who loves to discuss (share) art, I make it a habit to bring these miniature art books with me whenever I can.
This version showcases the Art Institute's well known pieces. Included are works from John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Toulouse-Latrec, Gauguin, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, and Suerat (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte).
Okay, that's a long list, but it's just a sample of what's inside!
The book offers a delightful mix of styles, concluding with Warhol, Mondrian, Lichtenstein and Pollock.
The pictures are, of course, quite small, but the book is too! That's what makes it so lovely! It can go anywhere. And never have I seen a better representation of such a variety of artists at such an inexpensive price.
(And, this is a book you can let the smallest toddler look at! It's just right for little hands!)Treasures of 19th- and 20th-Century Painting: The Art Institute of Chicago (Tiny Folios Series) Overview

The Age of French Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Art Institute of Chicago Review"Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 'Jeremiah, what do you see?'
And I said, 'I see a branch of an almond tree.'" -- Jeremiah 1:11 (NKJV)
The Art Institute of Chicago was the first museum that I ever had the pleasure to visit that had a deep collection in 19th century French art, especially Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. I was in rapture while in the museum and for days afterwards. While in college, I had the immense joy of working near the Art Institute for a summer so that I could even stop by during my lunches. My fascination grew. Since then, no trip to Chicago is ever planned without trying to include a visit to the Art Institute.
Until now, I had no powerful way to refresh and to expand my recollection of these marvelous works when not in Chicago. In this volume, I was delighted to learn more about the collection's formation, to find outstanding reproductions (including many full-page magnifications of key details), and lots of commentaries that go well beyond the usual "chat" label or recorded observations. In particular, the painting-related essays are excellent at expanding the viewer's ability to "see" added aspects of these marvelous works. I felt that I had never enjoyed a finer visit to the Art Institute to enjoy so many of my favorite works. The treatments of Seurat and Monet are especially outstanding.
Well done!!The Age of French Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Art Institute of Chicago Overview
