The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness ReviewThis is a delightful read for Cubs Fans. (I happen to be one living in exile in New Jersey!) It offers comfort for Cubbie fans woven with good day to day advice for living in general. I do have two beefs with the author though. A) He suggests that the Cubs are pretty much a White Collar Team. (B.S.!) and B) He winds up the book on a downer. "A Century of Losing: 100 Years 100 Frustrations". Other than that, It is a must for any Cub fan.The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness Overview

What It Means to Be a Cub ReviewI purchased this book for a special little boy that has become a Cub fan. Since I'm a life long Cub fan, he and I have something in common. His mom is also a fan, but doesn't know the history and back story and her son is interested in those things. This is the perfect book. He's 8 years old and enjoying it immensely! What It Means to Be a Cub Overview

Chicago Cubs Cookbook: All-Star Recipes from Your Favorite Players ReviewThis is one of those cookbooks that has many recipe's but some of them good and some of them bad. For instance, Ted Lilly's recipe is called egg in the hole...basically just cut a hole in a piece of bread and put an egg in there and cook it. Definitely not gourmet quality. But its all in fun. There are some interesting and good recipes from some of the players and even restaurant quality recipes from places like Harry Carey's Bar and Grill. The main reason to buy this is for a gift for some big Cubs fans and to support a great cause. The proceeds go to a pitcher named Ryan Dempster for his daughters disease. It is 22q and they are raising as much money as possible to help not only their daughter but anyone else affected by this disease.Chicago Cubs Cookbook: All-Star Recipes from Your Favorite Players Overview

The Original Curse: Did the Cubs Throw the 1918 World Series to Babe Ruth's Red Sox and Incite the Black Sox Scandal Review"The Original Curse" dives deep into the 1918 baseball season, the year before the Black Sox World Series-throwing scandal, and poses the provocative question: is it possible that the White Sox were not the first and only team to throw a World Series - and could their crosstown rivals, the Cubs, have done so the previous year? What sounds, at first blush, like a White Sox fan's fantasy, appears to be plausible or even likely after reading Sean Deveny's book. There's not nearly enough evidence to conclusively prove Deveny's hypothesis, but if the case Deveny assembles were to be heard by a grand jury, they would certainly call for further investigation. Unfortunately, too much time has passed and there is no smoking gun (such as a deathbed confession) to conclusively prove Deveny's case.
A good history book shatters myths and provides a much more detailed, nuanced, complex picture of a particular situation. Deveny certainly achieves this in "The Original Curse". Almost all baseball fans know of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, and think of that White Sox team as committing the biggest possible sin against the game, for purely selfish reasons. 1918 is also wistfully known by Red Sox fans as the last World Series won by their dominant early-twentieth century team before an 86-year drought. However, what Deveny shows is that 1918 was one of the strangest, most dysfunctional years in all of major league baseball history. Yes, the Red Sox did win the World Series that year, but it was anything but a competition between the best, most talented teams and players. Because of the ramp-up of the United States' participation in World War I, the war cast a huge cloud over the entire season, continually pulling (or threatening to pull) players out of the game, shortening the season, and almost cancelling the Series itself. Fans lost interest, players did too, and due to severe financial shortcomings, and the threat of never earning another decent baseball paycheck, some players likely were tempted to take money from gamblers to throw one or more World Series games.
Besides telling the story of the 1918 baseball season, Deveny also details the underlying causes of baseball's early twentieth century gambling problem and the inaction and cover-ups of baseball's powers that be when presented with evidence of the problem. Gamblers and players mingled freely, and gamblers openly conducted their business in major league parks. Should a player desire to make some illicit money from gamblers, there were plenty of opportunities to do so. Deveny also describes multiple acts of suspicious in-game behavior, and multiple cases of players developing bad reputations after being suspected by their managers for having thrown games. With this strong gambling culture as background, it is certainly true that the amount of gambling in baseball far exceeded the amount that has been publicized, investigated and punished.
Deveny writes in an entertaining style, and the book progresses at a fast pace. I actually wish it had been longer and provided even more detail. And, of course, if Deveny had been able to unearth a smoking gun, it would have made the book a must-read by all baseball fans. I definitely do recommend it for serious baseball fans with an interest in the history of the game, and especially fans of the three teams featured most prominently: the Red Sox, the Cubs, and the White Sox. Red Sox and Cubs fans may not like what they learn about their teams, but it is more important to know the facts than the myths.

The Cubs and the Kabbalist: How a Kabbalah-Master Helped the Chicago Cubs Win Their First World Series Since 1908 ReviewRabbi Sherwin's paean to perennial also-ran, the Chicago Cubs baseball team, in his THE CUBS AND THE KABBALIST might best be summed up with the following two word: "very cute."
It's true. It really *was* cute, and I had an exceptionally grand time turning the pages of this entertaining read, adding up to one of the more *fun* fictional pieces in my collection these past couple of weeks.
Admittedly, CUBS is safely nestled in the fictional world, folks. Sherwin blends his rigorously-researched reams of Cubs and other baseball statistics alongside the esoteric practice of Jewish Mysticism, or Kabala ("kabbalah"). I fell in love early and often with the way this story unfurled.
It begins with leading rabbi, Jay Loeb (J-Lo, anyone?), and his concerns over his wife Tamara. The author describes how the shalom bayit/bayis, or "peace of the home," chez Loeb has recently been disturbed by Tamara's frequent tirades railing against the annual stream of Cubs losses. We find ourselves at the point where it's beginning to affect her performance at work -- she's a lawyer, see -- and because of all this, Tamara's been stressing. Loeb's had enough, and he resolves on the spot to do something about it.
Like any loving husband might, the good rabbi seeks to ease his wife's pain, and rustles up a solution. Loeb eventually falls back on the mainstay of his rabbinical training and investigates the possibility of using his expertise in matters concerning the ancient Jewish Kabbalistic practice to provide a cure for what's been ailing Tamara's hapless beloved Cubs.
Soon, the Cubs begin cobbling together a series of seemingly-miraculous wins at home in the "Friendly Confines" of Shy-Town's [Chicago] Wrigley Field, mostly due to some clandestine "soul work" Loeb has been conjuring up in the silence of the night. Cue "The Golem of Prague" story -- for those of you who know it -- to explore the possibilities of what might happen to the rest of this story. (I won't give it away, but do expect a little twist at the end there. One which I think you're going to enjoy.)
This book is a pure pleasure read.
Sherwin doesn't overwhelm you with complex jargon, and while his subject material -- Jewish Mysticism -- is a very serious subject indeed, not to be trifled with lightly by any stretch (a la what Madonna, her husband Guy Ritchie, Bittney and others have been doing in Hollywood) -- he doesn't lord it over you inside the pages of this book. Delivered in a sometimes-humourous, sometimes-tongue-in-cheek style, Freud would be proud of Sherwin's cigar-is-just-a-cigar read -- I mean, c'mon!, it's baseball...our National Pastime (will it always remain so?). Don't expect some heavy non-fiction here, okay?
Byron L. Sherwin's quite obviously got the skills, ladies and gentlemen.
His narrative is tightly woven, and he leaves no stones unturned in CUBS. With a typical moviemaker's flourish, he ends his book with a cute little Epilogue a la what you might see in a happy Disney movie, and that made me smile. You'll learn of what "became" of the various players in this little drama, and I'll admit that it summed things up handily for this here reviewer.
On the beach?
A long flight across the ocean?
Or perhaps you're a baseball lover who's seeking an interesting little spin on the "Field of Dreams" narrative?
Then THE CUBS AND THE KABBALIST is probably for you.

The Million-to-One Team: Why the Chicago Cubs Haven't Won a Pennant Since 1945 ReviewThe million to one team is probably the best book ever written on the Chicago Cubs. It goes through the problems the cubs have endured throughout their history, but doesn't dwell on them. It rather shows the missed opportunities that the management has gone through, and that we, as fans, should remain hopeful. George Castle goes through the trials and tribulations of the entire cubs history, and how botched trades or failures in drafts can hurt you not only for 1-2 years, but can still be stinging 4-5 years down the line. Mr. Castle paints a picturesque scene that could have been the cubs. He shows how the upper management is to blame for this "million to one" streak of seasons without a world series. The Million-to-One Team: Why the Chicago Cubs Haven't Won a Pennant Since 1945 Overview

Southside Kid: Chicago ReviewFirst of all, what this is not. It is not a weepy, sniffling "good old days" lament. Nor is it a "things were much better back then" dirge. It is an extraordinarily detailed day-by-day account of a boy growing into manhood on Chicago's Southside. All the joy, nonsense and tomfoolery of adolescence are here, and so are the pain, tears, dejection and heartbreak. These emotions are universal to all teenagers, whether they were part of a middle-class clan, dirt-poor, or filthy rich.
The reader is left marveling at Erler's resilience in the face of the adversity and misery he brought on himself, as teenagers will. But he always bounced back, and each bounce brought him higher and higher. This Southside Kid is now a retired successful business man, with a happy marriage and a loving family.
Southside Kid will take you on a fascinating journey through the days of wars, snack foods, automobiles, sports, race relations, and the birth of rock n' roll. Music always played a big part in Erler's life, and he provides an unparalleled written soundtrack that is bound to provoke happy memories.
There is much here for readers of all ages. More than a memoir, this is a portrait of real life in America. Write on, Curt! Let's hear the rest of the story.Southside Kid: Chicago Overview

Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses ReviewThis interesting and insightful book looks into one of the most famous and long-lived curses in sports; the billy goat curse of the Chicago Cubs. In October of 1945, the Chicago Cubs were playing the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Games 1-3 were held in Detroit, where the Cubs won two of the three games. Returning to Chicago, the Cubs had hopes of closing out the series in front of the hometown fans. One of the fans who came to see the Cubs was William "Billy Goat" Sianis, a Greek immigrant who owned a nearby tavern.
Sianis came to the park with two box seat tickets; one for himself and the other for his pet billy goat "Murphy". Ushers immediately tried to prevent Sianis and his goat from entering, but they failed to keep them out. Once inside, Billy and his goat made their way onto the field before the ushers intervened again. Billy and Murphy were allowed to take the seats they had purchased, but, under orders from Cubs owner Phillip K. Wrigley, Billy and Murphy were ejected from the game due to, according to Wrigley, the goat's odor. Outraged, Sianis placed a curse on the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in the World Series. The birth of the "billy goat" curse had occurred.
The Cubs eventually lost the 1945 World Series to the Tigers and Sianis sent a telegram to Wrigley stating "Who stinks now?"
From that fateful series against the Tigers until today, the Cubs have never won a pennant or played in a World Series, just as Sianis said they wouldn't. There have been close calls (1969, 1984, 1989, 1998, and 2003), but ultimately something happened to spoil the Cubs dreams, such as the black cat incident in New York in 1969, Leon Durham's misplayed ground ball in 1984, and the infamous Steve Bartman foul ball interference in 2003. Although classifed as an "Urban Legend", many Cubs fans really believe in the curse. I must say that everything that Sianis said would happen to the Cubs has happened. How much can be attributed to the curse or to just poor luck or bad play?
I enjoyed this book a great deal. Although it is relatively short, it still gives very good information about the curse and some of the other lesser-known Cubs curses, such as the curse of Fred Merkle. I highly recommend this book. Baseball fans and, more specifically, Cubs fans like myself, will enjoy this fun look at one of the most famous curses of all time and how it has affected the Cubs for sixty years.Da Curse of the Billy Goat, The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses Overview

A Chicago Tavern: A Goat, a Curse, and the American Dream. ReviewI had an existential "A-ha!" moment in Rick Kogan's tribute to "A Chicago Tavern: a Goat, A Curse, and the American Dream."
Kogan says:
Around 1950, there were almost 7,000 taverns in Chicago. In 2006, there were fewer than 1,250.
This reviewer basically learned how to read while accompanying my father to visit his friends at Peg's Tavern in Hinckley, IL (They would give me nickels and quarters to play the juke box - so I learned P a t s y C l i n e and all her friends and all their songs.) There was a real sense of community and camaraderie among the regulars, like an Irish village pub/hub, that one doesn't encounter in the "fern bar" Chains of today, contributing, one can extrapolate, to the loss of neighborliness and sense of community in current culture. (See also Bowling Alone : The Collapse and Revival of American Community)
Kogan tells about a family of Greek immigrants who created a place where all collars, blue, white, and clerical meet and mingle; a tale of a Billy Goat's tail and the "truth" about the "curse" on the Chicago Cubs. Making appearances in text and photos are the Sianis family; various animal goats; various old goat humans: Mike Royko and Harry Caray; Aykroyd & Belushi (this is the real deal - where the "Cheezborger, Cheezborger! No fries . . . chips!" were made;) some presidents and other politicians; and even that Stinkier- than-a-Goat Devil & Demolisher of the 2003 Pennant Hope, Steve Bartman.
Docked a star because Kogan's choice to write the whole thing, even the historical stuff from 1916, in the present tense, riled this reviewer worse than a whole gaggle of sorority girl foo-foo umbrella drinks.

Wrigleyville: A Magical History Tour of the Chicago Cubs ReviewI heartily recommend all of Mr. Golenbock's works, Wrigleyville as well as Bums and Fenway. The author shares my passion for the greatest game ever invented, and it is especially heartening that he chose to write about the Cubs. This book shares much of its content with many recent epics about baseball, such as Ken Burns' Baseball, and Our Game by Charles C. Alexander. The relatively recent trend in emphasizing baseball's traditions and history render this book to be judged as a nice find; but if it weren't for the above mentioned books, it would be a treasure. Unlike the above mentioned books, however, the author has chosen a topic that forces him to look away from developments that occurred on the East Coast. I understand that baseball was invented pretty much on the East Coast, and a substantial portion of its history evolved there. But one thing I found maddening about Ken Burns' masterwork was the notion that New York City was the Sun which all the other baseball planets revolved around. Mr. Golenbock, as well, chose first to write about New York and Boston teams. It is to his credit that he has shown the same love and passion in his chronicling of Cubs history, which is every bit as long, involved, and passionate as Dodger or Red Sox history. As I noted above, there is very little attention paid to recent times...as any Cub fan knows, there has been very little to cheer about for the last half century. The author does a admirable job in analyzing the transition from William Wrigley, a baseball man, to his son Phillip, a gum man, and the long term harm on the franchise. I just wish he could have went one step further, to similarly dissect the "cost-benefit" approach the Tribune Company has used since it took over in 1981.Wrigleyville: A Magical History Tour of the Chicago Cubs Overview

The combination of sports related stories is so entertaining and fast moving. My favorites were "Scrabble Date", "Curse? There Ain't No Stinking Chicago Cub Curse" and "Gambling 101". The authors have an ability to capture your interest and hold it to the end of each story. Impressive writing talent was so enjoyable.
Also the male and female aspects of "sports" is a good contrast and combination.Curse There Ain't No Stinking Chicago Cub Curse: And Other Stories about Sports and Gamesmanship Overview

The Cubs: The Complete Story of Chicago Cubs Baseball ReviewI think I have read every Cubs book ever published and, without question, this is by far the best, best looking, and most comprehensive history of the team i have ever read. It has a little of everything, well, actually alot of everything - hundreds of new pictures, stats and essays plus a narrative history that reads like a PBS special, smart, thorough and thought provoking. Unlike so many other Cubs books this doesn't just focus on 1969, or all the billy goat bs, but tells Cub history as one big story, from the beginning to the start of the 2007 season. It looks like a coffee table book (and is BIG) but reads like something David McCullough might have written. Good to read straight through, like I did, or to flip through and look at the pictures like my son did with his grandfather. After reading this book you'll love the Cubs just as much as ever but you'll win any argument with other Cubs fans.
The only thing I didn't like was the ending. If the Cubs could only win a World Series, this book would be perfect. The Cubs: The Complete Story of Chicago Cubs Baseball Overview
