Total White Sox: The Definitive Encyclopedia of the Chicago White Sox Review"Total White Sox: The Definitive Encyclopedia of the Chicago White Sox" is actually an updated version of a same-titled book which came out in 2006. (The first volume in this series was released in 1997 under the name "The White Sox Encyclopedia".) Those who have the earlier editions will still want to get the latest version. The 2011 book is about 80 pages longer and goes through the 2010 season with updated stats and information. There are also a number of photos that are in this book that are not in the other versions. It would have been easy to put this edition out with as little changes as possible, but Triumph Books and Richard Lindberg have done a great job in putting enough differences in this book that fans won't feel they are buying something they already have.
Of course any hard-core White Sox fan will want to purchase this. Richard Lindberg is the ultimate White Sox historian, and his opinions and comments on the last few years of White Sox history are required reading for Sox fans.
The 2011 "Total White Sox" is a continuation of the earlier volumes in layout, design, and content, but there is enough new material within to make this edition worth having. Highly recommended to all lifelong Chicago White Sox fans.Total White Sox: The Definitive Encyclopedia of the Chicago White Sox Overview

Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History ReviewLike so many longtime fans of the Chicago Bears, I have something of an obsession with the 1985 team. Among the many remembrances of that season published over the years, this is the best of that entertaining lot, a colorful, no-holds-barred, insider's account that makes for addictive reading.
Steve Delsohn gained access to many players and coaches from the 1985 squad, and they shared their candid stories. It is difficult to say which ones are the most prominent, but the ongoing feud between Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan, the remarkably steady achievements of Walter Payton, the phenomenon of Refrigerator Perry, and the nutty and clutch qualities of Jim McMahon stand out to me.
More importantly, the book captures the rock star quality of this team, replete with its swaggering confidence and its many outrageous, hilarious, and poignant moments.
For Bears and other football fans who may be feeling a sense of sad nostalgia about an era gone by, this book makes the 1985 season as fresh as if it was unfolding before us today. I bought it this afternoon -- started reading it right in the bookstore (feeling a bit foolish as I laughed out loud at some of the stories) -- and finished it tonight. What fun!Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History Overview

The Cubs and the Kabbalist: How a Kabbalah-Master Helped the Chicago Cubs Win Their First World Series Since 1908 ReviewRabbi Sherwin's paean to perennial also-ran, the Chicago Cubs baseball team, in his THE CUBS AND THE KABBALIST might best be summed up with the following two word: "very cute."
It's true. It really *was* cute, and I had an exceptionally grand time turning the pages of this entertaining read, adding up to one of the more *fun* fictional pieces in my collection these past couple of weeks.
Admittedly, CUBS is safely nestled in the fictional world, folks. Sherwin blends his rigorously-researched reams of Cubs and other baseball statistics alongside the esoteric practice of Jewish Mysticism, or Kabala ("kabbalah"). I fell in love early and often with the way this story unfurled.
It begins with leading rabbi, Jay Loeb (J-Lo, anyone?), and his concerns over his wife Tamara. The author describes how the shalom bayit/bayis, or "peace of the home," chez Loeb has recently been disturbed by Tamara's frequent tirades railing against the annual stream of Cubs losses. We find ourselves at the point where it's beginning to affect her performance at work -- she's a lawyer, see -- and because of all this, Tamara's been stressing. Loeb's had enough, and he resolves on the spot to do something about it.
Like any loving husband might, the good rabbi seeks to ease his wife's pain, and rustles up a solution. Loeb eventually falls back on the mainstay of his rabbinical training and investigates the possibility of using his expertise in matters concerning the ancient Jewish Kabbalistic practice to provide a cure for what's been ailing Tamara's hapless beloved Cubs.
Soon, the Cubs begin cobbling together a series of seemingly-miraculous wins at home in the "Friendly Confines" of Shy-Town's [Chicago] Wrigley Field, mostly due to some clandestine "soul work" Loeb has been conjuring up in the silence of the night. Cue "The Golem of Prague" story -- for those of you who know it -- to explore the possibilities of what might happen to the rest of this story. (I won't give it away, but do expect a little twist at the end there. One which I think you're going to enjoy.)
This book is a pure pleasure read.
Sherwin doesn't overwhelm you with complex jargon, and while his subject material -- Jewish Mysticism -- is a very serious subject indeed, not to be trifled with lightly by any stretch (a la what Madonna, her husband Guy Ritchie, Bittney and others have been doing in Hollywood) -- he doesn't lord it over you inside the pages of this book. Delivered in a sometimes-humourous, sometimes-tongue-in-cheek style, Freud would be proud of Sherwin's cigar-is-just-a-cigar read -- I mean, c'mon!, it's baseball...our National Pastime (will it always remain so?). Don't expect some heavy non-fiction here, okay?
Byron L. Sherwin's quite obviously got the skills, ladies and gentlemen.
His narrative is tightly woven, and he leaves no stones unturned in CUBS. With a typical moviemaker's flourish, he ends his book with a cute little Epilogue a la what you might see in a happy Disney movie, and that made me smile. You'll learn of what "became" of the various players in this little drama, and I'll admit that it summed things up handily for this here reviewer.
On the beach?
A long flight across the ocean?
Or perhaps you're a baseball lover who's seeking an interesting little spin on the "Field of Dreams" narrative?
Then THE CUBS AND THE KABBALIST is probably for you.

Transition Game: An Inside Look at Life With the Chicago Bulls ReviewI bought this book to learn more about the "lost" season in the annals of the history of the 90's Bulls. There is plenty of coverage of the every season from 1990-1998 due to the prominence and popularity of Michael Jordan but the great 1993-94 season is mentioned only in passing if it all in most basketball books on this period. Unfortunately, this book came up short of my hopes.
The biggest problem with this book is that it focuses little on basketball. The Hue Hollins call, which cost the Bulls a likely trip to the NBA finals, is mentioned only once. Their regular season record is mentioned at various points but there is nothing, aside from a passing mention to a loss in the penultimate game of the season, about the stretch run which saw the Bulls battle the Knicks and Hawks for the #1 seed. She spends about two pages discussing the Bulls' efforts to acquire a legitimate starting two guard to fill the void left by Michael Jordan before the trade deadline.
When it comes to the playoffs you would think Jim Mora wrote this book! There is no substance about the playoffs. She spends plenty of time on "1.8gate" but that is pretty much it for her coverage of the playoffs. We are told about a jacket Corie Blount wore but told absolutely nothing about the Bulls' sweep of Cleveland and given about four sentences worth of substance (Myers frustrated Starks, Pippen had no help, Cartwright had a good series, Hue Hollins made a controversial call. That is it!) about the great Bulls-Knicks series.
She does a good job talking about the various personalities on the team and you learn about their backgrounds, what they were like, what they were thinking but the problem with this is she spends as much time talking about Pete Myers as she does talking about Scottie Pippen. I liked the chapters on Horace Grant's clashes with management and his consequent desire to leave the team and Toni Kukoc's transition to America and the NBA.
There was no coherence to the book. It was not chronological. It was divided based on the personality she focused on. There is a weird chapter on her life as a sports reporter that had nothing to do with the Bulls.
All in all it is a decent book. If you are a diehard Bulls fan this book is worth reading. It is short and you will learn some things. However, if you are not a Bulls fan reading this book is pointless.Transition Game: An Inside Look at Life With the Chicago Bulls Overview

Bull Run: The Story of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls The Greatest Team in Basketball History ReviewLazenby's book opens with the Bulls' heartbreaking playoff loss to Orlando in the 1994-1995 season followed by an offseason of introspection. What follows is a narrative of their record breaking regular season all the way to the championship. Each chapter tackles a key figure on that Bull championship team (Krause, Jackson, Kukoc, Rodman) interspersed with narratives of regular season games.
Lazenby provides the reader with a behind the scenes look on that historical season - the different strategies Phil Jackson uses to neutralize Miami's Alonzo Mourning for instance. My only complaint about this book is that it could have used a lot less pictures and more anecdotes.Bull Run: The Story of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls The Greatest Team in Basketball History Overview

Monster of the Midway: Bronko Nagurski, the 1943 Chicago Bears, and the Greatest Comeback Ever ReviewOn the strength of Jim Dent's other books, I preordered "Monster Of The Midway". The story of Bronko Nagurski, the early years of the Chicago Bears and the NFL is fascinating. However the book is much more. Dent's exhaustive research is evident. He has artfully woven the Nagurski story with a lot of the history and characters of the day. The birth of the NFL, George Halas, prohibition, Al Capone, gambling, the depression, Red Grange, college football and much more are included. Each page creates vivid word pictures that take you back in time and let you experience places like International Falls, Minnesota and Wrigley Field of old as you become acquainted with legends, their incredible stories and a captivating portion of upper Midwest history. Highly recommended.Monster of the Midway: Bronko Nagurski, the 1943 Chicago Bears, and the Greatest Comeback Ever Overview

NFL Today: The Story of the Chicago Bears (NFL Today (Creative Education Paperback)) ReviewGeorge Halas had a long history with the Chicago Bears. Originally the team was named the Stanleys, but when George, the founder, moved it to the "Windy City," a new name was in order. He was an all-purpose man who did everything from shoveling snow and selling tickets to actually playing defense. "Papa Bear" had a long history with the Bears, 62 as the owner and "also acting as coach for 40 of them." He started off playing for the Yankees, but football was his true calling and creating legendary team just seemed to be in his destiny. Wrigley field would be his home away from home for forty-nine years until an NFL ruling forced the move to Soldier Field.
The Bears' history was long and sweet. In the thirties they had powerhouse players like Red Grange, "The Galloping Ghost," and Bronislau "Bronko" Nagurski, men who help lead them to two NFL championships. The powerful forties brought on players like Clyde Turner, Sid Luckman, Clyde Turner and a defense aptly named "The Monsters of the Midway." From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, the team was good, but "no longer dominated" even though it "had a number of terrific players." In 1963 Frank Gifford, Doug Atkins and Y.A. Tittle pulled the team to a championship season, but the victory was short lived. For the next twenty years the team would only have four winning seasons. The rest of this story is legendary and be prepared to read how, by 1985, the "Bears were poised for greatness!"
The simple cover belies what the reader is going to find inside. This is a very well done history and the combination text and photo montage was amazing. I loved reading a bit of the straightforward history, but enjoyed reading some of the sidebars even more. There were some fascinating "On the Sidelines" stories about Brian Piccolo, the six-touchdown game and William "The Refrigerator" Perry's famous Super Bowl touchdown. There were also many player portraits in "Meet the Bears" sidebars. In the back of the book is an index. Are you a Bear's fan and love a book that will give you a little Bear's Shuffle and lots of action? If so, this is one book you'll want to meet!NFL Today: The Story of the Chicago Bears (NFL Today (Creative Education Paperback)) Overview

When Chicago Ruled Baseball: The Cubs-White Sox World Series of 1906 ReviewI was really looking forward to this book, because I believe each World Series, especially in the deadball era should be recorded for history with a scholarly account.
Unfortunately the 1906 White Sox- Cubs series still awaits that account.
Potential readers expecting a book of the same standard as Louis P. Masur's Autumn Glory or Roger I. Abrams The First World Series, both about the 1903 World Series will be sorely disappointed by this effort.
I got the impression that parts of the book were rushed out after the White Sox won the 2005 series and were not written by Bernard Weisberger, but by a TV script writer. I find it hard to believe that a "distinguished teacher and author of American History" and "one of the best historians on earth" could write in the following style.
"It was a great double play of the balletlike kind that makes baseball glow, and like Evers great pickup in the first, it stopped the hemorrhaging. But four more runs were in for Jones's pyrotechnic experts."
"He attended Georgetown University, and in 1902 earned his dental degree (the course for which was then shorter)."
Four years, two years, ten years, we are not told. One minute we are being given lengthy essays on Spalding, Comiskey and the labor wars, and then we are given very clipped one sentence career information about the actual players, who participated in the series.
Also some of the content and comment was just annoyingly wrong and clearly not checked by a competent editor.
For instance, "....-but the Irish and the Germans had begun to make their inroads."
This is 1906 we are discussing, and perhaps the author had never heard of Jennings, Keeler, Kelley and McGraw, those "hardscrabble Irish" heroes of the Baltimore Orioles. But surely as the players in the series included, Hofman, Sheckard, Moran, Schulte, Steinfeldt, Kling, Reulbach, Pfeister, Hahn, Rohe, Donahue, Dougherty, Sullivan, Altrock and Walsh, I think we can safely say that the Germans and Irish had more than "begun to make their inroads".
I don't like being so harsh, but when a book is only 184 pages long I want it to spend the pages on the subject or closely related themes, not lengthy diversions on baseball's labor wars, and the 2005 White Sox victory.
One particularly annoying feature was that in the first paragraph of chapter 5 Bernard Weisberger lenghtily explains that the third and fourth games of a best of seven series tied at one all are the "swing games", as if we are unable to count to three or four. Fielders are "like a hawk hovering over a field mouse", or run down fly balls "like a cheetah." If these embellishments were intended to replicate the style of 1906 newspaper reporting they were a singular failure.
This could have been such a good book if it had concentrated more on the series, the players, the season, and the city of Chicago as it was in 1906. If you are billed as "one of the best historians on earth" with "enormous talents" your books have to meet a very high standard, and unfortunately I don't think this book reached those standards. When Chicago Ruled Baseball: The Cubs-White Sox World Series of 1906 Overview
