Marshall Field's (A Building Book) ReviewThis is a SMALL book with SMALL print. I should have paid closer attention when I ordered it. I wish there had been more vintage pictures. Of course, I love to read anything about the late great Marshall Fields department store of which I have so many happy memories from childhood. Marshall Field's Food and Fashion (Chicago Tradition) ReviewThis is the one of the neatest little books on Chicago that I have ever seen. Recently, I was on a business trip to the windy city and purchased two little books by Joan Greene that were done as a series for the Chicago Cultural Center Foundation.
The one on Marshall Field's is great -- wonderful photos -- old and new and a good tribute to a Chicago institution that will be changing it's name next year. Growing up near Chicago, Marshall Field's Walnut Room Restaurant was always a treat at Christmas time and I love that the books has several recipes included. What I did not know and the book talks about is the number of retail first that began at Marshall Field's. If you like shopping or history or Chicago, this little easy-read is a must. I am ordering one for my sister to enjoy over Christmas.
P. S. The Chicken Potpie recipe from Field's is included. I remember my mother ordering that when I was a child. The book made me want to stop by Field's for a meal the next time I am in town.

Every year, my Dad would pack up the family and take us downtown to see the lights, the store windows, the crowds, the Salvation Army bands. And then there were the crowds, the snow, the jam-packed airport, the el...ah, so many memories. Well, this excellent book brings it all back.
Stuffed with nearly 200 excellent black-and-white photos, this book shows Christmas in Chicago for the first three quarters of the 20th century. Plus, each photo has its own, well-written caption. If you remember Christmas in Chicago, then you really must see this book. It is wonderfully produced, a real work of excellence (as are all the books in the Historic Photos series). Marshall Field's: The Store That Helped Build Chicago (IL) ReviewGayle Soucek's book, "Marshall Field's: The Store That Helped Build Chicago" is a wonderful book for Marshall Field's and Chicago fans, as well as anyone who wasn't fortunate enough to have experienced Chicago's international emporium, Marshall Field's. Although relatively brief, it is a full overview of Marshall Field's, from its inception with Potter Palmer in the mid-1800s through its loss to Macy's in 2006, and even up to today's efforts to bring it back to State Street.
Even if you have other books on Marshall Field's and Chicago, you will still want to buy this book. There are a number of never-before-shown photos, plus, as a bonus, a delightful section of rare Marshall Field's recipes.
Plan to buy many copies of this book for holiday season giving. I used to buy Frangos for my favorite Chicagoans and Chicago lovers; since I am boycotting Macy's until they restore Marshall Field's, I'm buying this book as a replacement gift. The book is even priced about the same as a box of Frangos and it's less fattening and much more educational!
