Passionately Human, No Less Divine: Religion and Culture in Black Chicago, 1915-1952 ReviewIn Passionately Human, No Less Divine, Wallace Best describes the difficulties blacks faced in migrating from the south to the north during the first half of the 20th century. Not only did they suffer from economic hardships and homesickness, but perhaps most daunting was the cultural transition from rural to urban life. Rather than portraying these migrants as vicitms, Best aptly focuses on the agency of these rural blacks in both their religious and everyday lives. Through an enlighening study and analysis, Best takes tremendous pains to show how rural blacks, and particularly black women, were not merely puppets in an established order, but agents in a rapidly shifting social order they themselves were bringing to pass.
Best dispels the myth perpetuated by many modern day sociologists that class differences were the main cause of divergent preferences in church membership and demonstrates that differences in church preference were largely determined by familial and community relationships that were brought with them from the south. In other words, one was most likely to attend the church one's relatives or hometown community attended, regardless of denomination.
Best highlights the work of two prominent black female ministers, Lucy Smith and Mary Evans, who, while very different in style and approach, each had trememdous impact on black culture in Chicago. With her more reserved style, Evans seemed to appeal to the more educated black population while Smith's more down-to-earth and emotional style seemed to captivate the hearts of southern blacks in a manner which reminded them of home and was a balm to their homesick hearts. Smith's focus on first tending to the physical and material needs of newcomers brought the masses to her doors.Best closes the book with a description of Smith's funeral which counted over 100,000 attendees including some of the city's most prominent citizens.
Through colorful descriptions and revealing photographs, Best makes a tremendous contribution to the existing body of work on this era. It is must-read for anyone interested in the history of Chicago, the Great Migration of blacks from the south to the north during the first half of the 20th century, the role of black women in church and community, or contemporary black religious life in general.

Sugar Creek Gang Books 1-6 Set (The Swamp Robber/The Killer Bear/The Winter Rescue/The Lost Campers/The Chicago Adventure/The Secret Hideout) ReviewI am a mom to 5 boys and our family has been hooked on the adventures of the Sugar Creek Gang for a few years now! We originally discovered the stories through an awesome set of cassette tapes. The books were dramatized for an radio series by Paul Ramseyer of Northwestern College Radio in Minnesota and our family is now a part of the ministry, helping to produce the audio series for families to enjoy at home! Do you want your children to learn gentle lessons of courage, faith & friendship on THEIR level? Do you want to see real growth in their character? The stories are fun adventures with the truth of God's plans woven skillfully throughout. See the world through the eyes of Bill Collins, a freckle-faced, firey-tempered red head. You'll enjoy Bill's antics and the barefoot fun of all the boys in the "gang"! (As a side note, I do recommend the books be read in order. They tell an ongoing story from beginning to end.) From the back of the tapes: "Step back in time... to one-room schoolhouses, hot summer days of fishing, fun and barefoot boys. Sugar Creek Gang stories engage the imagination and draw a child's heart into a living relationship with God! Hymns, scripture verses, nature lore, poetry; sensitivity toward the disabled, the oppressed... and the courage and confidence to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ." --- Just the right recipe for training up a child!Sugar Creek Gang Books 1-6 Set (The Swamp Robber/The Killer Bear/The Winter Rescue/The Lost Campers/The Chicago Adventure/The Secret Hideout) Overview

The Chase (Christian Heritage Series: The Chicago Years #2) ReviewThe only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating is because parts seemed a little...unrealistic. Like the mobster who is a truant officer. I won't give away the entire story but he seemed like he was either an incredibley paranoid man, or eles Nancy Rue just couldn't think of a reason for Rudy to tangle with mobsters. Little Al is definitly a 'cool' carachter- one you will love. I really like Nancy Rue and once again she has managed to make you feel really sorry for the main carachter and hate the bad guys. I can't say i love any of her carachters(excepting Little Al- but he is the exception to every rule!) but i do like them. An enjoyable read and i would recomend it. Very good moral and talks alot about God. If you have a problem with that i would suggest you not read any books by this author. I would reccomend any of her books, particularly the Williamsburg years. You will DEFINITLY feel sorry for that main carachter!!!The Chase (Christian Heritage Series: The Chicago Years #2) Overview

Imagining Religion: From Babylon to Jonestown (Chicago Studies in the History of Judaism) ReviewJonathan Z. Smith is the enfant terrible of the History of Religions discipline, although he's no longer young. From his first essays (collected in Map Is Not Territory) to his more recent musings in To Take Place and Drudgery Divine, he has outraged, stimulated, challenged, and restructured the study of religion in the modern academy.
Each essay here is a little gem, and should be read and savored by any serious student.
Right at the start, in "Fences and Neighbors", Smith shows his true colors: he talks about the taxonomy of walnuts, and uses this as a startlingly perfect demonstration of the strengths and weaknesses of various ways of defining and categorizing religion, religions, and religious groups. "In Comparison a Magic Dwells" points out that most comparison falls into Frazer's homeopathic/contagious magic division, and demonstrates the various pitfalls of the comparative endeavor. I could go on, right through the devastating and terrifying analysis of the Jonestown White Nights mass suicide, in which Smith argues that to study religion seriously, we have a duty to recognize that it is not always "nice," not always about love and peace, and that sometimes awful things are done because of religious feeling, but that nevertheless we are required to try to make sense of it -- a lesson that has renewed force in the wake of 9/11.
Smith does have one real flaw, though, which is that he assumes that everyone is as intelligent and careful as he is. He thinks that every reader will read all the endnotes, for example, and think about their implications for his arguments. And he assumes that every reader will hang onto a certain common-sense perspective on human nature, and interpret his arguments in that light.
Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. "In Comparison a Magic Dwells," for example, argues the need for a radical rethinking of how comparison should be done; many readers, however, think that he is anti-comparison in general. "The Bare Facts of Ritual," which tries to uproot an old sympathetic-magic reading of certain kinds of hunting rituals, and by implication a broader range of apparently intrumental rituals, has been interpreted as a failed attempt at a complete theory of ritual.
In short, this whole book needs to be read again and again, notes and all, with extraordinary care. If you're not willing to put in a great deal of effort, just don't bother--you're going to come out thinking that Smith has nothing constructive to say.
In _Imagining Religion_, Smith is by turns devastating and hilarious, and always brilliant. Not all of it can withstand every possible criticism, but what can? A seminal work, _Imagining Religion_ marks a place at which the History of Religions must either turn or turn back; the very possibility of the study of religion depends upon our turning.Imagining Religion: From Babylon to Jonestown (Chicago Studies in the History of Judaism) Overview

Real Hope in Chicago ReviewI read this book and wanted to cry. I asked the Lord where is this kind of true, loving, caring ministry today? Whatever the Lord has sent me to read, he will use. My husband and I are now in a one-year old ministry. I hope to use this book as a model of love and caring for the people of God. I have done much reading on what goes on in ministry for those who name the name of Jesus Christ and I have come away sorely discouraged and disappointed. I have given this work to our ministry leaders and asked them to read it! The comments from those who read it were truly blessed by this man's work and obedience to God. To think that his work started with a "washing machine"; just meeting the needs of God's people, opened a great door of ministry in Chicago. I truly love this work! I have never met the author, but his work has greatly influenced what we will do in our ministry for God. He that has begun a good work... I tell our leaders that this is the spirit we are endeavoring to have in our minstry at Christ's Church. Thank you for sharing his story and carrying this resource.Real Hope in Chicago Overview
