The authors lived in a low-income neighborhood in the 1960's and were able to closely observe community and gang behavior; they have many good insights into the nature of social relationships. Mean Streets: Chicago Youths and the Everyday Struggle for Empowerment in the Multiracial City, 1908-1969 (American Crossroads) ReviewI couldn't disagree more with the previous review. I found the prose somewhat dense at times, but for the most part clear and convincing. More importantly, this book is based on an enormous body of rich data, and, unlike many historians, the author is not afraid to bring complex theoretical insights to the stories he is revealing. As someone who works on youth issues, I was convinced by the book's pathbreaking move to place youths and street culture at the center of our understanding of racial identity and neighborhood politics. I was also impressed by the author's ability to move from the story of European immigration in the early twentieth century all the way through the era of civil rights and white backlash without losing any precision. African Americans in Chicago (Images of America) ReviewI received by book yesterday and immediate sat down to read it. What a wonderful review of black life in segregated Chicago. The many pictures are great memories of schools, business, family and social life in the city. As a genealogists researching several ancestors who migrated in Chicago at the turn the century, I even found the location of the home of the Faternal Knights of Pythias. I had been searching for that location for many years. The author has done a wonderful job with the photos and memories.
