Intersections - Love, Betrayal, Murder: The Chicago Trilogy ReviewLinda Rae Blair has an innate talent for drawing you into her stories. She has a way of pulling you into the lives of each character and not letting you go. Intersections is a trilogy of stories where the lives of each main character intersect with the others at some point.
First we meet Katherine, a young girl who has the only life she knows ripped away from her and is plunged unwittingly into a corrupt world. She grows up without a true family, but as many people know, friends can be closer than family. We follow her from the time she is three until she is a young adult, and it is a rather exciting journey to follow.
Secondly we meet Claire; introduced briefly in the first story as a mentor for one of the characters, here we delve more deeply into her life. An extraordinarily strong and determined woman, she is an icon for all women who struggle to cope with the stresses and pain of life.
Lastly, we follow the story of the man Claire falls in love with.
My only qualm with the stories is the same as I have with any romance; it can makes a person feel lonely, and long for that amazing feeling of intense and forever fairytale love.
Mystery and suspense romance are generally not my first choice for reading material, but after enjoying Elusive, I decided to give Intersections a go. I have enjoyed this book as much as the first, and will continue to read Blair's contributions to the literary world.

It Only Takes a Moment: A tale of love, relationships, drinking, and debauchery in Chicago ReviewNow, I'm normally not the kind of lass that enjoys romance but this book hooked me from the first few pages. I enjoyed the book a lot because its not a typical romance novel, which would have turned me off entirely.
I'll be honest, until I got more into the book my gripe was going to be about how quickly Lem and Dani fell in love and how into each other they seemed to be; but as I read through it I could see them in people I knew, and in things I've gone through. The book to me is about how two emotionally screwed up people grow up together and learn to love each other, and themselves.This is most definitely not a typical romance novel.

Chicago: The Movie and Lyrics (Newmarket Pictorial Moviebook) ReviewI've been dying for this book to come out! Finally, I get it. I love it. I have to express my feelings for this great film, play and book. First of all...this is probably one of the most lavish musicals ever made. Second of all...if you have never seen the film, Do! Third of all...buy this book! It includes the complete screenplay (with some cuts from it) and an in-depth behind the scenes section with picutures of the 1975 Broadway play, the making of the film and real life "murderer's row."

Port Chicago (CA) (Images of America) ReviewImages of America: Port Chicago is a 127-page book that tells the story, through text and pictures, of the California town and naval base that suffered a dramatic explosion of two ammunition ships during WW II. The book sets the stage for this event by telling the history of the town from the early 20th century to the explosion on July 17, 1944 and concludes with the story of the closing of the town by the Navy and the subsequent eviction of its citizens.
The story of this explosion raises questions about its cause and the role of the Navy in the drama. While there have been a number of publications about the explosion itself and the plight of the African American sailors who were killed or who were subsequently court-martialed for refusing to load other ships because of the danger involved, this book additionally tells the stories of the people of the town who also suffered as a result of the event.
The story will not be of interest only to readers who want to know about this event and/or the history of the town. It also should be of interest to those who wish to learn about how our government, in ths case the U.S. Navy, can deal with civilian populations in whatever manner it deems necessary, regardless of the damage done to their lives. Also, and most important, it is the story of a typical small American town made up of hard-working and interesting people who suffered one calamity after another (loss of industry because of the Great Depression, the explosion, the eviction), but who still persevered.

The most useful book on dramatic writing I've come across--including Syd Field and Lajos Egri. It's perfect for experienced writers looking for exercises and analytical tools to help with rewrites; but it's also ideal for anyone first learning the craft. It can be used as either a how-to book, or a reference manual. My favorite feature is a troubleshooting guide at the end called "Fixing Common Script Problems." Each section gives you the problem ("Not enough conflict," "Main character too passive,"etc.), suggests how to approach it, then points to exercises in the book to help fix it. That section alone is worth the price of the book!
