Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History ReviewLike so many longtime fans of the Chicago Bears, I have something of an obsession with the 1985 team. Among the many remembrances of that season published over the years, this is the best of that entertaining lot, a colorful, no-holds-barred, insider's account that makes for addictive reading.
Steve Delsohn gained access to many players and coaches from the 1985 squad, and they shared their candid stories. It is difficult to say which ones are the most prominent, but the ongoing feud between Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan, the remarkably steady achievements of Walter Payton, the phenomenon of Refrigerator Perry, and the nutty and clutch qualities of Jim McMahon stand out to me.
More importantly, the book captures the rock star quality of this team, replete with its swaggering confidence and its many outrageous, hilarious, and poignant moments.
For Bears and other football fans who may be feeling a sense of sad nostalgia about an era gone by, this book makes the 1985 season as fresh as if it was unfolding before us today. I bought it this afternoon -- started reading it right in the bookstore (feeling a bit foolish as I laughed out loud at some of the stories) -- and finished it tonight. Game of My Life: Chicago Bears ReviewI got this for my Dad on Christmas and all my brothers kept passing it around all day reading different entries. All the player's stories are only a few pages long so this makes for a great short story book that can be read for 10 or 15 minutes then put down, and revisited. All the Bears fans in my life loved it! I guess some of the people in it are pretty rare interviews and my Dad and brothers were so interested to see which games the different players would choose to discuss in this book. They all would guess which game they were going to talk about before they checked that section.Game of My Life: Chicago Bears Overview

Probably the best book I've ever read about the Bears. If you are a die-hard Bears fan like I am you already know your history and the greats and don't need a book retelling stats and scores. This book is mostly what Bears fans haven't heard. Hilarious stories from the field and locker room alike.

NFL Today: The Story of the Chicago Bears (NFL Today (Creative Education Paperback)) ReviewGeorge Halas had a long history with the Chicago Bears. Originally the team was named the Stanleys, but when George, the founder, moved it to the "Windy City," a new name was in order. He was an all-purpose man who did everything from shoveling snow and selling tickets to actually playing defense. "Papa Bear" had a long history with the Bears, 62 as the owner and "also acting as coach for 40 of them." He started off playing for the Yankees, but football was his true calling and creating legendary team just seemed to be in his destiny. Wrigley field would be his home away from home for forty-nine years until an NFL ruling forced the move to Soldier Field.
The Bears' history was long and sweet. In the thirties they had powerhouse players like Red Grange, "The Galloping Ghost," and Bronislau "Bronko" Nagurski, men who help lead them to two NFL championships. The powerful forties brought on players like Clyde Turner, Sid Luckman, Clyde Turner and a defense aptly named "The Monsters of the Midway." From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, the team was good, but "no longer dominated" even though it "had a number of terrific players." In 1963 Frank Gifford, Doug Atkins and Y.A. Tittle pulled the team to a championship season, but the victory was short lived. For the next twenty years the team would only have four winning seasons. The rest of this story is legendary and be prepared to read how, by 1985, the "Bears were poised for greatness!"
The simple cover belies what the reader is going to find inside. This is a very well done history and the combination text and photo montage was amazing. I loved reading a bit of the straightforward history, but enjoyed reading some of the sidebars even more. There were some fascinating "On the Sidelines" stories about Brian Piccolo, the six-touchdown game and William "The Refrigerator" Perry's famous Super Bowl touchdown. There were also many player portraits in "Meet the Bears" sidebars. In the back of the book is an index. Are you a Bear's fan and love a book that will give you a little Bear's Shuffle and lots of action? Bear With Me: A Family History of George Halas and the Chicago Bears ReviewAuthor Patrick McCaskey in "Bear With Me" shares stories - memories of Papa Bear George Halas, a history of the Chicago Bears and many of its great players, a history of the National Football League and many of its great owners, reminiscences of his personal relationship with Halas, his father and mother, many of football's greatest stars, and his years at Notre Dame High School (Niles, Ill.) - he has compiled or composed over several decades. This is a great read for football fans and coaches everywhere, and Chicagoans like me who grew up with George Halas and "duh Bears."
McCaskey provides insights gained only by someone who shared Halas' life as his grandson, godson, and great friend. Halas, as McCaskey highlights throughout the book, was someone who loved and cared for his family and had a tremendous influence not only in his family, but also on his colleagues, coaches and players, and friends.
Halas' life also had an element of divine providence. He just barely missed taking the ill-fated passenger ship, the Eastland, for a trip across Lake Michigan in 1915. The ship overturned taking 812 lives. God had important things for him to accomplish before he called him home...and accomplish them he did. Halas continues through McCaskey's stories as an example for all.
McCaskey takes us through Halas' early years in Chicago; his years at the University of Illinois where he lettered in football, baseball, and basketball; his Navy years as recreation officer at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center; his time as a New York Yankee only to be replace by a youngster, Babe Ruth; his formative years in the pros as a player/coach for the A.E. Staley company football team (Decatur, Ill.); the creation of the American Football League at a Hupmobile Auto Agency in Canton, Oh.); the birth of the Bears: and the emergence of pro football as mass entertainment.
"Bear With Me" includes words of wisdom, not only offered by McCaskey in his closing chapter but also through speeches given to honor Papa Halas, Gale Sayers, Brian Piccolo, George Connor, his Uncle Mugs, and Doug Atkins which are included as Appendices.

Then Ditka Said to Payton: The Best Chicago Bears Stories Ever Told with CD (Best Sports Stories Ever Told) ReviewIf you are a fan of the Chicago Bears, you'll probably enjoy this book (I did). If not, maybe three stars. Many of the stories in this book would be familiar to a Bears' fan. But it's still fun to reexperience the snippets of eighty years of the history of the "Monsters of the Midway."
The volume begins at the beginning--the origin of the Bears. They actually started out as the Decatiur Staleys; then, the team moved to Chicago. George Halas was a key organizer of the team then and continued as coach and owner for many years. The book covers some of the interesting players employed by the Bears--from Red Grange onward. The book takes a chronological look at the team, althopugh the bulk of the coverage is from the 1960s on (something of a disappointment, as the Bears' history before then was rich indeed).
The author, Dan Jiggetts, was a player with the team, and has some of his own observations that "spice up" the volume.

Soldier Field: A Stadium and Its City (Chicago Visions and Revisions) ReviewWrigley Field may be better-known, but the author has it right when he says of Chicago's Soldier Field "a stadium and its city." It turns out that far more than athletic events have been held in this massive facility. For example, it used to be the setting for the annual Chicagoland Music Festival which attracted both performers and spectators in Brobdingnagian proportions. (I remember in particular the massed accordions.) It has hosted memorable religious events, such as the Catholic Eucharistic Congress in 1925 and the Billy Graham Crusade of 1962. Chicago Bears: The Complete Illustrated History ReviewMy husband and I are both Bear fans. My husband loved this book and now we are ordering for our grandson. The illustrations are great and stats on players bring back memories long forgotten. Also love the fact that it give game stats for every game. Love the beginning that gives facts of how the team was formed.
