Da Bears: How the 1985 Monsters of the Midway Became the Greatest Team in NFL History ReviewLike so many longtime fans of the Chicago Bears, I have something of an obsession with the 1985 team. Among the many remembrances of that season published over the years, this is the best of that entertaining lot, a colorful, no-holds-barred, insider's account that makes for addictive reading.
Steve Delsohn gained access to many players and coaches from the 1985 squad, and they shared their candid stories. It is difficult to say which ones are the most prominent, but the ongoing feud between Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan, the remarkably steady achievements of Walter Payton, the phenomenon of Refrigerator Perry, and the nutty and clutch qualities of Jim McMahon stand out to me.
More importantly, the book captures the rock star quality of this team, replete with its swaggering confidence and its many outrageous, hilarious, and poignant moments.
For Bears and other football fans who may be feeling a sense of sad nostalgia about an era gone by, this book makes the 1985 season as fresh as if it was unfolding before us today. I bought it this afternoon -- started reading it right in the bookstore (feeling a bit foolish as I laughed out loud at some of the stories) -- and finished it tonight. NFL Today: The Story of the Chicago Bears (NFL Today (Creative Education Paperback)) ReviewGeorge Halas had a long history with the Chicago Bears. Originally the team was named the Stanleys, but when George, the founder, moved it to the "Windy City," a new name was in order. He was an all-purpose man who did everything from shoveling snow and selling tickets to actually playing defense. "Papa Bear" had a long history with the Bears, 62 as the owner and "also acting as coach for 40 of them." He started off playing for the Yankees, but football was his true calling and creating legendary team just seemed to be in his destiny. Wrigley field would be his home away from home for forty-nine years until an NFL ruling forced the move to Soldier Field.
The Bears' history was long and sweet. In the thirties they had powerhouse players like Red Grange, "The Galloping Ghost," and Bronislau "Bronko" Nagurski, men who help lead them to two NFL championships. The powerful forties brought on players like Clyde Turner, Sid Luckman, Clyde Turner and a defense aptly named "The Monsters of the Midway." From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, the team was good, but "no longer dominated" even though it "had a number of terrific players." In 1963 Frank Gifford, Doug Atkins and Y.A. Tittle pulled the team to a championship season, but the victory was short lived. For the next twenty years the team would only have four winning seasons. The rest of this story is legendary and be prepared to read how, by 1985, the "Bears were poised for greatness!"
The simple cover belies what the reader is going to find inside. This is a very well done history and the combination text and photo montage was amazing. I loved reading a bit of the straightforward history, but enjoyed reading some of the sidebars even more. There were some fascinating "On the Sidelines" stories about Brian Piccolo, the six-touchdown game and William "The Refrigerator" Perry's famous Super Bowl touchdown. There were also many player portraits in "Meet the Bears" sidebars. In the back of the book is an index. Are you a Bear's fan and love a book that will give you a little Bear's Shuffle and lots of action? Conspiracy in the Streets: The Extraordinary Trial of the Chicago Eight ReviewI wasn't expecting to laugh when I started reading, but I laughed at so many points. Not only the defendants' humor is hilarious at times, the prosecution almost never ceases to be ridiculous making a funny scene at times, and truly disturbing at others.
Drawings are beautiful, and the cover itself sells the book I bet.
Where each of the eight defendents ended up later in their lives was most amazing. Chicago's New Negroes: Modernity, the Great Migration, and Black Urban Life ReviewFrom its opening pages, Chicago's New Negroes delivers a knockout punch. Baldwin opens his monograph with a retelling of Jack Johnson's 1910 heavyweight victory and its impact on Black Chicago, and thus only begins to weave an epic and compelling tapestry that demonstrates how Black people "acted" rather than were "acted upon." He resituates ideas once limited to discussions of the Harlem Renaissance and moves them geographically to Great Migration-era Chicago. There, dots are connected to demonstrate the very tangible relationship between consumer culture and intellectual life.
To the reader's delight, Baldwin resists the tendency to provide a straightforward "history" of African Americans in Chicago in the early twentieth century. While the text does follow the stories and innovations of such major players as Madame CJ Walker, Thomas A. Dorsey, Oscar Micheaux and baseball's Rube Foster, it also provides a much needed space in which we get to hear the thoughts and words of everyday people, those who sat in beauty parlors, enjoyed the early years of cinema, attended sporting events, and made a way despite the racial, social and economic limitations. We soon determine that southern migrants to Chicago brought with them not country ways, but entirely new, entirely modern, ways of thinking.
For authors, allowing everyday people to speak for themselves is sometimes difficult. Yet, Baldwin manages to make these voices heard and it is a credit to his writing style. His presentation is especially adept in the sports chapter. Here, Baldwin takes the reader on a tour of Black Chicago's various "playgrounds." We have no problem envisioning the juking, the fakes, the fast forwards, the trucking, the passing and dribbling and their possible meanings for building a better world.
Through chapters devoted to the "mapping" of the Black Metropolis, beauty culture, film exhibition and filmmaking, the rise of gospel music and the sporting life, Baldwin allows a glimpse into a world of possibility, a world where popular culture is just as, if not more, worthy of study as so-called arts and letters. He forces a new understanding of even the Harlem Renaissance, an ambitious project for sure. While the book is a scholarly monograph, Baldwin's forays into social and cultural theory are so nuanced as to make the book accessible to a wider audience. And for that we should be thankful. Even though the urgent and triumphant stories within Chicago's New Negroes take place seventy five or a hundred years ago, the lessons we learn from them and the hope we take with us when we close the book are timeless.
