Chicago in Photographs ReviewChicago In Photographs is a celebration of the best that the city has to offer; from the wide open spaces of Lincoln Park to the stunning visual impact of street sculptures, such as Picasso's untitled piece in Daley Plaza and Anish Kapoor's silvery Cloud Gate in Millennium Park - from the much loved Buckingham Fountain to the more functional W.W. Boyington's castellated Water Tower of 1869 - from the massive John Hancock Center to the "old giants" of Chicago architecture, Union Station and the Wrigley Building. All are included in a pictorial journey around one of the nation's greatest cities.

Sears Tower: A Building Book from the Chicago Architecture Foundation ReviewAs an occupant of Sears Tower, I find that Pridmore provides an easily-understandable overview of Sears Tower with an especially good focus on how the building was conceived and developed, with dozens of color pictures. There are also a few pictures of the Tower's offices, including Sears Roebuck's old offices, though the offices are mysteriously devoid of human inhabitation. Too often people think that towers like Sears are built by Cities wanting to be boastful rather than private enterprise seeking profits, and in that sense Pridmore tells the story of the tower very well except the sterile interior pictures. He also avoids the cliches like how many toilets are in the Tower.
I have only seen one good discussion of the daily life in a skyscraper, and this is not it. (See the Feb '89 National Geographic if interested.) Pridmore's discussion of the Tower post-construction is limited to discussing renovations and neglects other aspects that my friends usually find much more interesting. For instance, Tower occupants often see amazing sunsets--that is, when the upper floors aren't enshrouded in clouds. Some Tower occupants become motion-sick when the building sways and creaks in windstorms--also not discussed. A man can punch the windows with his fist but they will not break. (I've seen it tried--but don't you try it.) Finally, rumor is that although Sears Roebuck lost its ownership of the Tower a decade ago, they still own the giant Calder sculptures and mobile on the Wacker side. Sears was unable to move the artwork when they left, and because they are screwed in place, the artwork is not technically part of the building.Sears Tower: A Building Book from the Chicago Architecture Foundation Overview

Chicago In and Around the Loop : Walking Tours of Architecture and History ReviewAn excellent set of tours of all neighborhoods of downtown Chicago, profusely illustrated with contemporary and archival photos, with a lively and user-friendly text. Especially helpful for the first-time visitor, although I understand it has been adopted by the Chicago Architecture Foundation as a guide to train its docents who give walking tours. I have not come across any better guide to the Loop and its surroundings, with a crisp style and useful historical facts. City in Time: Chicago ReviewIf you love Chicago, you'll love this book, especially if you are no longer near Chicago.
We have here 140 pages of pictures of Chicago landmarks, sorted into "then" on the left page and "now" on the right, accompanied by about a hundred words of caption explaining what you are looking at and why it is significant. All are landmarks of Chicago and include at least one spot everybody who has ever been there must have gone by, stared at, gone in, or admired.
As a graduate of Illinois Tech., I did catch one awful clinker. To have the building on page 109 (the original Old Main of Armour Institute of Technology) called Crown Hall (it is really about two blocks from there) must have had Mies van der Rohe spinning in his grave for at least a month.City in Time: Chicago Overview
