Julius Shulman: Chicago Mid-Century Modernism ReviewThis beautiful book was apparently conceived as a companion to Julius Shulman: Palm Springs, another wonderful Rizzoli publication from 2008. That book freshly re-examined some of the greatest mid-century architects who had homes and buildings built there, including Richard Neutra, A. Quincy Jones, Paul R. Williams, Albert Frey, William Cody, Donald Wexler, John Lautner, and others.
What made it such an incredibly beautiful work was that all the pictures, both color and black and white, were from the photographic archives of Julius Shulman, the late, great architectural photographer who had a special passion for the Palm Springs area his entire life. This new book not only incorporates what may be the final brilliant photographs of the world's most famous architectural photographer, it also, as described by its title, is a collection and short history of mid-century modernism in the Midwest. The book features new(2006), and wherefore never before seen, Julius Shulman photographs of some of the most beautiful, and long overlooked, residences designed by eleven of the very best modernist architects of that time, including Paul Schweikher, Bertrand Goldberg, Ralph Rapson, Robert Hausner, Keck and Keck, Edward Humrich, Edward Dart, Harry Weese, Burton Frank, Don Wrobleski, and H.P. David Rockwell. Some of these architects may be more well known to historians than others, but there is no mistake that all of these homes capture the clean and exciting design spirit of mid-century modernism. Mr. Gand pulled off a miraculous coup by somehow enticing Mr. Shulman to fly here from California and create a "Shulman style" photographic log for this collection. The high resolution pictures, like the often heavily wooded homes featured, are warm, inviting and mesmerizing eye candy to lovers of modernism. The interiors are brought to life with an extreme and almost uncanny detail, a trademark of Shulman's work his entire life. The publishers and author elected to use basically all color in this book, an expensive process but one that is astonishingly rewarding.
The book is written with both expert knowledge and an undeniable passion of the time by Gary Gand, one of the co-founders of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond, an architecture preservation organization based in Chicago. While the adequate and easy to read text may not be as comprehensive a history as some might want concerning this era, it perfectly compliments the stunning photographs of Shulman, which is the main focal point of the book. Mr. Gand gives us enough details about each house featured that it perks one's interest in finding out even more. The author admits this book is not to be considered the "final" study, only a new first look and a long overdue photographic collection of an exciting era of design. Interestingly, every home featured in this extremely interesting collection is owned by a member of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond.
If you simply love the photographic work of the late Julius Shulman, or if you simply love the design aesthetics of mid-century modernism, this is a book you will want in your library. I am personally hoping that there might be a second book on the same subject in the future as there are apparently many other mid-century modern designed homes that might enjoy this deluxe treatment, even though Mr. Shulman is no longer around to do the photographs. Bottom line: Five stars. Enjoy!
