Northern European and Spanish Paintings before 1600 in the Art Institute of Chicago: A Catalogue of the Collection ReviewComing from the antipodes, I have not yet visited Chicago and satisfied my desire to view its Art Institute. It has previously been my impression that the renown of the Art Institute of Chicago has rested on its modern and impressionist collection. Having had the pleasure of viewing this beautiful catalogue of the Art Institute's holdings of Northern European and Spanish old master paintings, I am even more keen to make the journey.
It has to be admitted that on the evidence of this catalogue, Chicago does not possess the profusion of great old master paintings that might be seen in premier galleries located in cities such as New York, London, Washington or Paris. There are some superb works from artists of the calibre of El Greco, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Memling. However the bulk of the works are by more obscure practitioners or are described as being by followers of, from the workshop of or are attributed to a certain district. Despite this fact, these "lesser" works are generally very pleasing on the eye, are of high quailty and definitely worth examining.
The reproductions (many in color) and general printing quality are of an exceptional standard, as are the detailed and informative written contributions. I strongly recommend this magnificent catalogue to prospective purchasers.
