Chicago is somewhere that I have never been; however, the book offered me a "tour" through its photos. The only thing wrong with this book was the fact that it was small, about the size of a letter piece of paper. I like photos big, big, big. The author finds serenity in destinations such as at the Bahai Temple, but also in tucked away corners of busy places. Serenity at the Chicago History Museum? Find it at the Chicago Diorama Gallery. At the Field Museum? Go to the Jade Gallery. Some of the choices are known only by immediate neighbors, such as the view of the lake from behind the Evanston Art Center. As very few guides do, this one ranges over the greater Chicago area, from Naperville to the Indiana Dunes. It selects destinations that usually aren't in the same list, such as beaches, harbors, cafes, and farms. Chicago ReviewChicago is one of the most visually stunning cities in the world. It has without question the most beautiful skyline in the world. Lake Michigan and the Chicago River reflect the engineering marvels and Grant Park is like a welcoming lawn before the towers. The images in this book are very beautifully realized the the production of the book is of quality, but I have to say the price is a bit steep, there are so many arial book on Chicago that are as good or better and much less expensive.Chicago Overview

City in Time: Chicago ReviewIf you love Chicago, you'll love this book, especially if you are no longer near Chicago.
We have here 140 pages of pictures of Chicago landmarks, sorted into "then" on the left page and "now" on the right, accompanied by about a hundred words of caption explaining what you are looking at and why it is significant. All are landmarks of Chicago and include at least one spot everybody who has ever been there must have gone by, stared at, gone in, or admired.
As a graduate of Illinois Tech., I did catch one awful clinker. To have the building on page 109 (the original Old Main of Armour Institute of Technology) called Crown Hall (it is really about two blocks from there) must have had Mies van der Rohe spinning in his grave for at least a month.City in Time: Chicago Overview

Chicago (America the Beautiful) ReviewThis photo book on Chicago is beautiful!I live in California,but am from Chicago- and I enjoy having a book to look at that has all the top Chicago sites, plus wonderful more personal moments that make Chicago the great city that it is. The city's fabulous art and architecture are featured prominently. The book is just the right size- easy to handle and get through in one sitting. But engaging enough to look at over again. The text not only tells us what we are looking at,but often includes facts that aren't commonly known- eg that Picasso refused to accept the $100,000 that the city offered him for the sculpture he designed for one of the downtown plazas. The color photography is fabulous- vibrant and subtle colors and interesting shots of familiar sites.I have given this book as a gift to many friends who are transplanted from Chicago to other parts of the country- and they love the book. Anyone who hasn't been to Chicago- would see this book and want to go there!Chicago (America the Beautiful) Overview
