Jim Nutt: Coming Into Character (Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago) ReviewI enjoyed this book immensely, but I may be biased because I've been a fan of Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, Ed Paschke and the rest of the Chicago Imagists for a long time. Their work often focuses on grotesque and carnival like imagery, and will not appeal to those who believe that art is meant to celebrate beauty and noble aspirations. Devotees of conceptual work or Greenberg's formalist theories may also find much in Nutt's early work to offend them. The late portrait series may intrigue the latter two groups in that the work is serial, raises identity issues and is visually elegant (in an off-beat, goofy way).
The essays by Warren, Gross and Worth take different approaches to explaining Nutt's work. One focuses on the development of Nutt's career; the second ties his work to art historical precedents; the third focuses on the portraits of women series that has been the sole focus of the artist's work since the mid to late 70s. The reproductions are excellent and the layout and design of the book is inviting. I keep going back to this book and finding more things to enjoy.Jim Nutt: Coming Into Character (Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago) Overview

Chicago Imagists ReviewThis book focuses on a highly under-studied group of significant Chicago artists working in the 1960s and 1970s. The Chicago Imagist group included greats such as Ed Paschke, Jim Nutt, Gladys Nillson, Karl Wirsum, Roger Brown and more. An important piece of scholarship, and a great read with amazing images.Chicago Imagists Overview

Postcards from Chicago / Postales desde Chicago (Bilingual English/Spanish) (Spanish and English Edition) ReviewThis book, as well as all of Laura Crawford "city" books are excellent nonfiction picture books for children from grades K-6. The original photographs of historic and important places in each city provide important geographical and historical information for children. The postcards written to "grandpa and grandma" add a personal touch. By writing the facts in both English and Spanish, the books appeal to English Language Learners. With the decrease of social studies learning time in many classrooms today, these books can be used in reading classes to help students learn to read nonfiction.Postcards from Chicago / Postales desde Chicago (Bilingual English/Spanish) (Spanish and English Edition) Overview
