Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada (Chicago Guides to Academic Life) ReviewThis book was recommended to me by head of the Fulbright program in Ukraine. Unfortunately, I bought it too late - after one month in US.
The book is really good and well structurized. I contains not only general information about american academic cuture but also many everyday things: greetings in different parts of the country, spending free time, buying a car and so on.

Writing for Social Scientists: How to Start and Finish Your Thesis, Book, or Article: Second Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) ReviewStarting Chapter 1 of my dissertation proposal scared the living daylights out of me. Where to start? How much do I need to research and read before I actually start writing? And then there is the never-ending "Here's just one more article/book/website I need to read/investigate before I can even start *thinking* about writing" refrain...
Becker, in a very straight-forward and humorous manner, gets you going. He lets you know the absolute fear you are feeling is perfectly normal and that the first draft is just that - a first draft. It doesn't have to be perfect; in fact it *shouldn't* be perfect. After reading this book, I simply sat down and started writing. I didn't worry about punctuation or sentence structure, I just wrote. Some of it ended up in the trash, but much of what I wrote on the first go-around was molded into some very good work.

Getting It Published, 2nd Edition: A Guide for Scholars and Anyone Else Serious about Serious Books (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) ReviewWilliam Germano, vice president and publishing director at Routledge, wrote Getting It Published to explain the expectations that scholarly publishing houses have toward writers. He set forth as his goals "to explain how publishers select manuscripts and publish them, to help the serious writer best present her or his work so that its chances for acceptance will be significantly increased," and "to show how the process from submission to publication can be made to work, and work well for both publisher and author" (x). Germano's helps train the young scholar how to shop his book around after he has done sufficient research and written a manuscript. Germano explains that an author must ask the two questions: "Why did I write this book?" "Whom did I write it for?" (1). Too often, an author has too big of expectations for their book. Many scholarly works concern a niche subject that will not penetrate the culture at large. It is important for the author to understand what audience would be interested in his book and to approach publishing houses that have shown an interest in that subject.In the end, Germano's Getting It Published is very useful at guiding the unpublished author through the upcoming publication obstacle course. His perspective is unique to most scholars since he is on the publisher side of the fence, and this perspective provides a lot of insights that would not be shared in a conversation with a fellow scholar. The neat thing about reading through this book is that it actually inspired me to delve more into my research and write more. Germano has written a book that provides a good practical layout on simple things like writing letters and asking for permissions to reprint pictures, quotes and poetry while at the same time expressing what the expectations for the author are and what the author should expect out of the publisher. The Chicago Guide to Your Academic Career: A Portable Mentor for Scholars from Graduate School through Tenure ReviewI personally love this book and find it to be much more interesting, and in some ways informative, than a similar book I have which is a bit more clinical in its approach. It's full of personal anecdotes and lots of advice that I enjoyed. And why should anyone get mad just because the two white, male professors said they have not noticed any discrimination against women in their fields? They don't say there isn't any, and indeed, give some statistics and information to say there probably *is* discrimination, but of a more covert manner than in the past. This book has a chapter that my other book doesn't on counteroffers and moving around in academia, how to negotiate family and the 'two-body' problem, and other more intimate advice than some other books give. The authors seem to recognize that academics is not all about publishing, teaching, and service. It involves many other aspects of your life, and they touch on them. That said, a 3-hour chat with 3 of your own professors may be just as informative as this book, but the problem is getting your professors to sit down and have that chat with you! Here you get those 3 hours for a low price and can consult them later. I like the fact that these 3 don't hold themselves up as ultimate authorities, but simply as 3 different viewpoints of an academic life.The Chicago Guide to Your Academic Career: A Portable Mentor for Scholars from Graduate School through Tenure Overview
