I'm a Chicago-based journalist who specializes in quirky, off-beat features and have written for a variety of outlets including: Chicago Tribune, Travel + Leisure and Chicago magazine.
All of us tried to pick unusual information, topics to give insight in to lesser known Chicago facts. For example, Chicago is home to the only Cambodian Museum in the United States and how Nike missiles were hidden during the Cold War around Lake Michigan. Learn about why the Billy Goat Tavern got it's name, the types of movies that have been filmed in the Windy City and how things like Twinkies and Tinker Toys were started in Chicago. W is for Windy City: A Chicago City Alphabet (Discover the World) ReviewHaving enjoyed other books in this series, I was delighted to find "W is for Windy City" on display at my library. The illustrations are gorgeous and detailed in the sweetest little ways...I had to smile at the Magnificent Mile illustration of a little girl carrying her American Girl doll and shopping bag from AG Place. The authors and illustrators truly did a beautiful job capturing the essence of Chicago. Anyone who has been there will immediately recognize everything in the book. There is more to it than just ABC's and landmarks. The book also teaches historical facts and character values (like the determination of the people who rebuilt the city after the Great Fire) as well as an appreciation for the cultural melting pot of the city. It has special meaning for my Ohio family because my Chicagoan step-dad died from cancer this year, and he was delighted to take us around the city on many memorable occasions. My daughter is too young to remember a lot of things, but my son (age 4) really loves to point out the Navy Pier and "Bean" illustrations and remember going there with his beloved Papa. This would be great to read to your kids before, during, or after a trip to Chicago and certainly a family heirloom to keep if you are indeed from Chicago.
