Laugh your troubles away: The complete history of Riverview Park, Chicago, Illinois ReviewThis short book (166 pages) gives a fairly detailed account of Riverview Park, on the North Branch of the Chicago River between Belmont and Addison, from its beginnings as Sharpshooters' Park in 1903 (after the Association had stopped shooting and disbanded) until its demise in 1967. It is copiously illustrated, all in black and white; mostly photos of the rides, but other aspects of the grounds are covered as well, and there is quite a collection of maps. The mustachio'ed and severe fellows who synthesized business and public spirit are portraited; also the pretty girls who must have been in the thoughts of the young boys who visited Riverview because life offered, at that stage, nothing better. There is a lot of interesting detail, if it is interesting, such as Mike Royko's run-in with a kind of racial politics not much encountered these days, and the difficulty of disposing of the various rides and other paraphenalia when the Park closed; the era of the urban amusement park was coming to an end, however important these places may have been in our local tribal remembrance. The famed leering Aladdin was, of course, not unique to Riverview; he leered in New Jersey as well, just as Bozo and rest of it existed outside of Chicago as well, however unique it seemed to a child. The entire book very vividly brings back that Chicago that was the gargantuan capital of Middle America, that is to say, Everywhere or Nowhere, depending on how you felt about life, after you'd learned a bit about it.Laugh your troubles away: The complete history of Riverview Park, Chicago, Illinois Overview
