Useful introductory material by other authors includes an essay on the Greek Orthodox Church in the Chicago region and general introductions to Greek Orthodoxy and its complex artistic traditions. Fiorentinos' examples range from the most humble suburban churches, to historic urban buildings such as Annunciation in Chicago, to more recent structures, such as Saints Constantine and Helen in Merrillville, Indiana, where one sees the contemporary revival of Byzantine-style icon painting. The large-format book is extremely easy to navigate. I have found it helpful for teaching about the visual culture of religion. It would also make a handy resource for the tourist or anyone interested in the Orthodox church in particular or the material expression of religion in general.
