Mr. Dooley and Mr. Dunne: The Literary Life of a Chicago Catholic ReviewEdward Bander's Mr. Dooley and Mr. Dunne (1981)is a modern classic and a reference work worth acquiring. Bander's book is a "cultural mirror" of an era where political discourse was a part of everyday life as opposed to the exclusive province of spin doctors. Dunne's character of Mr. Dooley has an enduring quality. I also learned from Mr. Bander's book that many familiar allusions originate with Mr. Dooley. Bander notes that in the Boston Globe, October 5, 1902 that Mr. Dooleys says: "Th' newspaper does ivrything fr us. It runs th' polis foorce an'th' banks, commands th'milishy, conthrols the'legislachure, baptizes th' young, marries th' foolish, comforts th' afflicted, afflicts th' comfortable, buries th' dead an' roasts thim aftherward." Dunne's concept comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable is a phrase that applies equally well to the 2000 election. It is probably not surprising that Professor Bander dons a baseball cap: Gore-Lieberman 2000, Comforing the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable! I also strongly recommend Bander's book on Shakespeare and the Law.Mr. Dooley and Mr. Dunne: The Literary Life of a Chicago Catholic OverviewWant to learn more information about Mr. Dooley and Mr. Dunne: The Literary Life of a Chicago Catholic?
