Along the New Line to the Pacific Coast. Opportunities on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Review"Along The New Line To The Pacific Coast. Opportunities On The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway" is a 15 page pamphlet with pictures and illustration.
It is essentially a sales pitch produced by the agents of the Rail Road meant to induce people to move to the sparsely settled northwestern states so that the Rail Road company could benefit from any communities which might eventually develop.
The pamphlet was advertised circa 1908 in magazines such as "Fruit Grower" and "Garden and Home Builder". The ads featured some tantalizing press, exclaiming:
"Through the Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington the building of this railroad opens up a country full of money-making possibilities. Rich farm lands are now at $10 per acre and upwards They are bound to increase in value within the next few years."
Interested parties need only write FA Miller and George B. Haynes to receive this informative pamphlet.
And this informative, well written, very readable pamphlet is fascinating. Not only for the 'salesmanship' it contains, but for the insight you can gain into this period of U.S. history. There are pictures of farmers cutting their '3rd crop of alfalfa', as well as 'lignite coal just there for the taking'. Not to mention horse drawn equipment.
And the author spins some wonderful tales about the life to be had on this cheap land. Healthier and more worth satisfying and worthwhile than any city can provide. I met a woman driving a mower, he says and then the pamphlet continues:
"She said: ' Two years ago I was earning a bare living for myself and my four children, keeping boarders in a factory town in the east. It was hard work. A crisis came. We were burned out. I had $400 insurance money and the children left. A girl friend, a wage worker there, was going to Montana, the bride of a sheep owner. Then we decided to go west. It is for this sheep owner that myself and my two lads, twelve and fourteen years of age, are doing the mowing and raking. We made $150 that way last year.
We shall, in addition to cutting our own winter's hay, make over $250 this year, and I confess that I have grown to like riding the mower far better than coaxing a cooking range in a stuffy boarding house. This old cabin was an abandoned sheep camp when I filed on the claim. We all enjoy the life. I can keep my family together here. They tell me I can get $15 per acre for my land now. I would not take it. This is the first time in my life I have enjoyed that Messed feeling of being in my own home, my very own home, with no rent days coming around.
' We raised three acres of sod corn this year. I shall not now have to buy corn for our ducks, turkeys and chickens, which are the special care and pride of my two girls, whose poultry and egg sales have added quite $100 to our common purse this year. '

But it's not all pie-in-the-sky. At the end there is information on how to "secure a farm from Uncle Sam." And the pamphlet explains how to make 'an application', who can secure the land and how, as well as hints such as because horses are so expensive out west, that you should consider using the rails to bring your own.
All-in-all this is a marvelous little piece of history. Short and interesting.
