Debut: Chicago, 1952 ReviewI recently read Mr. Holland's relevant account of a young man's observations of gay bar life in Chicago in the 50's. Although I did not start my bar hopping until a couple of decades later, his descriptions of the patrons he encountered were similiar to the people I met in New York City at a later time.
The uncertainty of his life in chicago with Joey, the lover who loved everybody, was touching and at times heartbreaking. A lesser man might have crumbled.
I would definitely recommend this book, especially for younger gays, as a definitive picture of what gay cruising was like at that time. We can thank these pioneers for their willingness to share their joys and pain so we can identify, or observe, before our gay history is forgotten.Debut: Chicago, 1952 Overview
