I Am Your Brother Joseph: Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago ReviewThis affectionate biography of the late Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago is penned by a newspaper writer who knew him well and covered him from the time of his arrival in Chicago in 1982 until his death in 1996. The title refers to how he introduced himself when first meeting the assembly of Chicago priests in 1982. The narrative explains how he came to be known and loved by hundreds of thousands in the city.
Unsworth's mix of personal anecdotes, character description and historical narrative keeps the reader's interest in this profile which he admits is more an informal portrait than a formal biography of his friend, whom he considered the best known and most loved bishop in America. While Bernardin as bishop had held the important post as general secretary of the Catholic Bishop' Conference for a few years and previously served as archbishop of Cincinnati, it was in Chicago that he became more widely known by the general public.
Coming to Chicago after the sometimes stormy tenure of Cardinal Cody, Bernardin's radically different style was bound to impress. His reaching out to priests, people and populace of the metropolitan area endeared him to many but did not prevent him from experiencing much difficulty and even pain. The latter was particularly true in the case of the public charge that he had abused a young man years before. How he responded then and after the charge was withdrawn presents a dramatic illustration of the man's character. Unsworth also describes how Bernardin responded when he learned of his terminal cancer, behavior which prompted a Time magazine cover story and led countless numbers to find in his final days an inspiring lesson in how to die.
Perhaps best known and most quoted in Church circles for his referring to all issues concerning human life as constituting a "seamless garment," Bernardin's impact nationally and in the Church extended beyond life issues. His spirit seems especially needed in these times of contentiousness in civic and church life. Shortly before his death he inaugurated the Catholic Common Ground Initiative, which even today strives to bring together Catholics of differing views to explore and reaffirm their common ground. Schooled solely in the United States, Bernardin's approach often contrasted with other influential American prelates, mostly on the Eastern seaboard, whose training and ties were generally more closely linked to the Roman universities and Curia Cardinals.
Unsworth's biography is a revealing and a touching portrait of an inspiring and thoroughly human Catholic priest as well as a fascinating glimpse of late 20th Century American Catholicism.
