Church, Chicago-Style ReviewWilliam Droel has been active in the Chicago style of Catholicism since 1978, when he moved to the diocese after observing that it was a center for "precursors, participants, and promoters" of Vatican II. In the introduction to his latest book, Droel lists more than 80 individuals and organizations involved in "Chicago's brand" of social thought and action from the 1930s to the `60s. He also defines nine major characteristics of the Chicago style, including (1) reciprocal relationship between liturgy and justice, (2) emphasis on social action within the workplace, and (3) close collaboration with those of other faiths. Separate chapters feature the work of three clerics and three lay persons, all born between 1914 and 1921. Droel introduces excerpts from their writings with a personal note and overview of their contributions to "the Catholic spirit in Chicago admired and acclaimed around the world."
Though this material was written some years ago, the issues addressed are by no means dated, as the following examples show. "Unless the laity see the competence and moral vision which they bring to their everyday work as their unique road to sanctity, the church is only spinning its wheels when it talks about the Christian vocation to bring justice and charity to world affairs," Russell Barta, in Let the Laity Be Laity. "God does not speak in one manner to people called to a priestly or religious vocation and in another to people called to a lay vocation. God speaks to all through their talents and their opportunities," Fr. Dennis Geaney, OSA, on the meaning of work and vocation.
