John Marin's Watercolors: A Medium for Modernism (Art Institute of Chicago) ReviewI learned by reading "John Marin's Watercolors" that Look magazine named John Marin as America's Number One Artist in 1948. Why did I not know, as a museum goer, very much about this "Number One" American artist?Anyone who loves art and wants to know more about John Marin needs to get this book. It is beautifully written and illustrated, marvelously telling John Marin's story and clearly explaining his watercolor technique. You understand from "John Marin's Watercolors" that he was an artist's artist. The book accordingly details his innovative technique and goes through aspects of his methods, such as frame making, that few other art books discuss. For water-colorists and other artists, this is a perfect companion to the Winslow Homer watercolor book produced by the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008. For the rest of us, it is an excellent history of someone we should know something about.
The exhibition, which the book accompanies, will be at the Art Institute of Chicago until April 17, 2011 and at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from June through September 2011.
