The Rise of Chicago's Black Metropolis, 1920-1929 (New Black Studies Series) ReviewThis book came out at a very good time for me. I was just finishing up my own, "African Americans in Chicago". And although mine is aimed at a popular audience, I've used information in this book as a source for the period it covers in great detail.
I don't think there has been another book written that covers it as well (if at all). Congratulations to Dr. Reed and thanks for doing the digging to uncover a period of American and Chicago history that has been buried for so long. You show the amazing accomplishments of AfrAmericans in Chicago that have been largely lost to history. It makes the much touted Harlem Renaissance seem limited in comparison.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the index has left out some of the most important figures included in the book.
