The Halloween Party: 9 (Chicago and Cat) ReviewThis is another very funny book in the "Chicago and the Cat" series by Robin Koontz. In this one the always-well-meaning Chicago (a rabbit) and her always-wanting-to-eat friend Cat (a cat, of course) try dressing up in two parts of a horse costume. Their intention is to win first prize at the Halloween Party. From the beginning, the two friends have hilarious problems, starting with who gets to be the front end of the horse and who gets to be the back end of the horse. When, after several mishaps, they start out to the party, they knock on a door to trick-or-treat. The sight that greets them scares them so much that they gallop (sort of) away. When they eventually find their way to the Halloween Party, the prize has been given and the food has been eaten. But all's well that ends well in this great tail of cooperation (and not) and friendship. And fun!The Halloween Party: 9 (Chicago and Cat) Overview

I've found that kids relate to the personality conflicts in the stories, with the slightly crabby (but soft at heart), fish-loving Cat and the always optimistic, vegetarian rabbit, Chicago.
These are well-written, well-illustrated early chapter books, with strong chapter endings that keep the reader turning pages.
