The Logic of a Rose: Chicago Stories ReviewThis collection of short stories balances perfectly between the perspective of its child protagonist, Petey Bellapani, and the wisdom and understanding that comes of age. Lombardo portrays Petey with tenderness and understanding without ever sentimentalizing or idealizing him. In other hands, Petey's evolution might have led to disillusionment, but Lombardo brilliantly captures Petey's internal voice, a voice that never loses its wonder even as he learns the codes of Bridgeport, his tough neighborhood. Lombardo's collection defies the flat characterization of masculinity too common in contemporary popular culture. Petey, his father, and even the punks of Bridgeport are three dimensional, outwardly posturing but inwardly real, devoted to the toughness expected of them while holding within extraordinary loyalty, affection, courage, and their own brand of honor. The Logic of a Rose: Chicago Stories Overview

Scarface Al and the Crime Crusaders: Chicago's Private War Against Capone ReviewNo, it wasn't Eliot Ness and his "Untouchables" who brought down Al Capone. It was Internal Revenue agents led by Elmer Irey and Frank Wilson and aided and abbetted by the Chicago Crime Commission and its vigilante arm, the "Secret Six." Professor Hoffman presents us here with a well-documented, and highly readable account of the victory of Uncle Sam and Chicago over America's first major crime lord. Forget The Untouchables. This is the truth.Scarface Al and the Crime Crusaders: Chicago's Private War Against Capone Overview

Chicago Run (Endworld) ReviewThe Chicago Run is simply an amazing book, in that the united people in the book run against one of the toughest enemies that there is around in the post nuclear world. Being almost like a communist style government that succeeded in the future, Chicago is raked by technology, police, propoganda, and some upset civilians. The ideals of freedom are not existent in the controlled city. In comparance to say, living in the dead zone, its a much better choice. The team does a lot of amazing things in chicago, including trying to better others' lives.Chicago Run (Endworld) Overview

Armed and Dangerous: Memoirs of a Chicago Policewoman (Illinois) ReviewThis book is the most realistic account of policing in Chicago that I've ever read. I'm a Chicago Police Officer and can attest to the authenticity of the descriptions contained in this book. Gallo doesn't sugar-coat anything--she describes the Academy like it was, uses language true to policing, and hits it on the head with her definition of "game face". Mostly though, she nails the descriptions of the bosses--from the superintendent through the street sergeant--right on the head. It's exactly what the "real police" think, but can't say, because they would be buried in the Duece on midnights if they did. Thanks, Gina. I hope all the bosses read it and cringe when they recognize themselves! I know I can put names to many current and former P.O.'s from your vivid descriptions. Nice to see the deserving squirm a bit. Assuming they have the conscience to do even that much!Armed and Dangerous: Memoirs of a Chicago Policewoman (Illinois) Overview

Street Player: My Chicago Story ReviewI'd always hoped that someone in the faceless supergroup Chicago, would write a book. Danny Seraphine, Chicago's original- incredible drummer, finally has made this 40 year hope, a reality. What is also amazing is his storytelling ability. Describing himself as a street corner guy throughout the book, Danny has been through it all. From super highs, to nomad-unbelievable lows, it is all here. Rare pictures of Chicago too, and some great stories "behind the scenes". From Terry's shadow Lee Loughnane, to Terry's pranks of burping in Danny's face; to Walter's rubber duck; to Jim Guercio's complete hands-on control; and Jimmy Pankow's "Cheeky-Sweets"; the scheming of Jason & Bill; Robert's genius in the early years; Peter Cetera tells Danny, "I was forced out"; and Playboy bunnies @ Caribou Ranch-now there's something I never would have expected! In my humble opinion, Chicago are probably the greatest band of all-time. Just listen to Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago II and Chicago III. The music speaks for itself. So does Danny's saga. "My Chicago Story" is a great read. You won't put it down once you start reading. Upon finishing the "My Chicago Story" experience, I thought for awhile, then realized this: These guys had more music to give, accomplished maybe 20 or 25 percent of what could have been delivered. Drugs, pride, selfishness, ego, all got in the way. But lets relish what they did deliver on. Danny's story is another celebration of this joy, known as the music of Chicago. I highly recommend this book. I wish for Danny Seraphine all the best and continued success.Street Player: My Chicago Story Overview
