The Cloudbase Chronicles - Life at the Top: Living and Working at Chicago's John Hancock Center - An Engineer's Tale. ReviewHarry Budge's exposé of very human nature in a very unnatural setting--homes as far up as 92 floors above the earth--is fun and funny. "The Cloudbase Chronicles" easily makes my list of the top books on Chicago.
Budge was the longtime chief engineer of the residential portion of Chicago's iconic John Hancock Center, a skyscraper that opened to businesses and apartment-dwellers in 1970. If you want to know what it's like to work for finicky residents with a deep well of entitlement, this is your book. It's not an obvious angle for a successful roman à clef (pseudonyms lightly veil the identities of his characters), but like the Hancock Center itself, this book works on many levels.
Budge is hard on some residents but just as unforgiving of himself, a disarming quality that adds to the book's charm.
Let's hope he has enough material left for a sequel. I'll be the first in line.
