Chicago's Horse Racing Venues (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) ReviewKimberly A. Rinker, Chicago's Horse Racing Venues (Arcadia Publishing, 2009)My biggest problem with Chicago's Horse Racing Venues, Kimberly Rinker's Arcadia Publishing title tracing the history of racing in and around the Windy City, is that it sometimes seemed as if Rinker had no idea who her target audience was. There are times in the captions when an explanation of a basic horse-racing term that even the most casual fan would already know is followed up by a piece of jargon more obscure, but that gets no explanation at all. This is especially odd given that the book covers both thoroughbred and harness racing. (One can't assume that a person who's exclusively followed the gallops is going to have any idea what racing hobbles are, for example, but every racing fan is likely aware of the length of a furlong.)
On the other hand, there is everything else about this book.
Chicago's Horse Racing Venues, from Arcadia's Images of America series, is chock-full of memories from the first hundred twenty-odd years of Chicago racing, from now-defunct (and, in some cases, long-gone) parks whose names remain only in memorial races like the Washington Park Handicap to the rise of the rejuvenated Arlington at the turn of the century. Handicap stars of the past, human sports legends, and some faces familiar to modern race-goers all have a place here. If you're a racing fan, there's something here to tickle your fancy.
Once again, Arcadia Publishing has done a very good job of publishing a book that will appeal to locals and armchair travelers alike; a good one to add to the collection. *** ½
